During the SAS PHY meeting, there was considerable concern expressed about
12G drive connector performance when connector solutions from different
manufacturers are mated together. It is not known whether a connector from
vender A mated with a connector from vendor B or C will provide the required
performance. If there are performance issues with mixing vendors, the SAS
phy group needs to have data available so that if a particular connector
design solution is required for interoperability, the selection can be made
by evaluation of a controlled and unbiased set of data. To obtain this data,
it appeared that there was agreement among the connector manufacturers that
a standard receptacle test board and footprint can be agreed upon. Drive
plug boards, because of the many different mounting requirements, would not
lend themselves to a common test board, but would require unique boards for
optimized footprints that consider the lead geometry and mounting
configuration. These boards must be designed to several specific common
attributes such as board material, number of layers, trace length, SMA
connector type, etc. to be defined by the working group. During additional
discussion in the STA plugfest meeting, a goal of having the data compiled
and the capability of making an informed decision at the July T10 meeting if
a connector design needs to be selected was set. Although aggressive, this
schedule is not out of reason with the application of enough commitment and
effort. To facilitate this endeavor, a separate set of teleconferences is
being set up to address this specific issue. Interested parties are
encouraged to attend. These connector-specific teleconferences will be held
separately from the regular phy working group teleconferences.
