You are right, they are completely different by design.
The Supported Protection Types field in extended INQUIRY VPD page indicates
whether the drive is capable of supporting particular types of protection
information. This doesn't indicate whether any such feature is actually
enabled in the device.
The P_TYPE field in READ CAPACITY(16) indicates which protection type is
actually enabled in the drive and therefore specifies the behavior that
will occur when particular read and write commands are sent to the drive.

All,
There seems to be a difference between the SUPPORTED PROTECTION TYPES
defined in Table 331 of spc4r04, and the P_TYPE definitions of the READ
CAPACITY (16) Parameter data defined in Table 43.
The way I read the definitions of these two items sounds like they are
defining the same thing.
Help – I am confused
