This Touchstone model was requested of me.  I have no personal point to
make with it.  My take on how it might be used is this:  If TCTF
(magnitude formula) is used to specify TX performance, as it has in the
past, then this model is the limiting case for hardware that could be
used to validate a TX.  That is, it's the best that could be done.

What is the use for the TCTF in the S-parameters format. 

 

Typically TCTF limits maximum (amplitude) insertion loss versus
frequency and we should be 

ok with the analytical formula or mask type requirement

 

TCTF is not a real interconnect behaviour, but rather an  a g r e e m e
n t  between parties

involved in standard

 

S-parameters  may give us phase information (read ISI),  however,   will
it be ever used

for specification purposes same way as TCTF?

By request in the SAS Phy meeting I have uploaded 05-355r0.zip
containing an s2p touchstone file with insertion loss identical to the
IT TCTF (the original XAUI curve).  

 

This is a dif'l 2-port model rather than an s4p (4-port) because that is
all the program I use (Oculus by AtSpeed) can generate.  

 

Also, the frequency goes only to 10 GHz, again due to apparent program
limitations.  (However, the frequency squared term makes this model
increasing unrealistic at higher frequencies anyway.)

 

Last, the phase information is not constrained by the TCTF definition.
The program (Oculus) generates apparently realistic, non-constant group
delay in the model due to the skin effect (square root of frequency
term).  

 

A cheesy little plot of the insertion loss and group delay is included
below, as well as a polar plot of the perfect return loss assumed for
this model.
