The Objective is to complete the Marketing Requirements for SAS 2.0, to
the level that T-10 has sufficient marketing direction to continue with
the definition.

Of course this doesn't mean the discussion stops after we can finalize
these requirements, but it should be viewed as a significant milestone.

SAS 2.0 Marketing Requirements

* All components of the SAS 2.0 infrastructure must evolve
independently of each other, i.e. we can't impose architectural changes
on installed components in order to function properly.

*          Preserve 3G installments/infrastructure (backward
compatibility)

* Double transfer rate, while improving cost/performance

* Reduce the number of host/external storage connections/Gb

* Be compatible with 6Gb SATA within the constraints of the 6Gb
SATA usage models (i.e. short backplanes, short cables, etc.)

- Longer backplanes may require additional components or higher
negotiated signaling levels

* Leverage other PHY standards work (EQ, BER, etc) where
applicable

- For example: OIF CEI-6G, etc.

*          Maintain 1.5Gb & 3Gb SATA/SAS Compatibility

* Same usage models apply for 6Gb as they did for 3Gb

- Backplanes, cabling distances and applications

- Additional cost burden for rack-to-rack cabling solutions
(10m) acceptable, but must not add cost to current usage models

- Equalization schemes (if necessary) should not appreciably
burden cost & power budget, especially for disk drives

* Critical mass components ready for plug-fest testing in
mid-2007

* Improve topology management and status reporting

*          Bandwidth Aggregation

-         Optional

- Burden distributed between the expander and/or the host
controller

-         A 6G link can support 2-3Gb connections

-         A 3G link can support 2-1.5Gb connections

For the meeting I'd like to walk through this list, and entertain papers
that help clarify or challenge any of these points.

If we can get to a consensus or near consensus list on Monday evening,
the STA board will likely call for a vote during the STA Plenary on
Wednesday to solidify the SAS 2.0 marketing requirements.

Thanks

Harry
