Since we currently use the SSC Unload command I had envisioned a change to
SSC. It seems that HP is also using the SSC Unload command.
It may be that SMC-3 will be the best place for this. Where is less
important than that it be standard so that ISVs can use the same code for
all autoloaders.
As far as obsoleting the attached medium changer model I am not so sure we
would support that. Our DAT autoloader is really closer to an attached
media changer model but that model did not exist until SCSI 3, hence it
started out as a media changer at LUN 1 and drive at LUN 0.
What I am not sure of is ISV support for attached media changers. They are
not so different than a media changer but discovery is via the MChngr bit
in the drive inquiry page.

If I understand your situation correctly, what you are suggesting adding a
new command to the SMC command set. It's a little late for SMC-2, since
this standard is currently in second public review. SMC-3 was discussed
near the end of the development period for SMC-2, but to my knowledge a
project proposal has not be created for it. There were several issue that
were planned to be addressed by the next generation of SMC, including:
1. Obsoleting the attached medium changer model.
2. Dealing with mixed medium libraries.
3. Updates of the Tape alert flags.
4. Removing Element reservations.
Most of the people who would be interested in this project have been kept
pretty busy lately in the development of the ADC and ADT standards. We're
getting pretty close to being finished with the first generation of these
standards, and may well be ready to pick up SMC-3 when they are complete.
The most likely editor for SMC-3 is Erich Oetting from StorageTek. You may
want to contact him directly to find out when he expects to be ready to
handle proposals.

Yes, that is what we currently do. Typically the ISVs will unload the tape
with a Move Medium command instead of Unload.
Tim Jones posted that HP's DAT autoloaders use byte five, bit seven of the
Load/Unload command to direct ejecting the magazine. (Control byte bits
seven and six are VU)
None of this is standard, the reason I posted in the first place. Since
it's being done it would be nice if it was standard.

I had another silly question about your autoloader implementation. How do
you differentiate between unloading a tape and ejecting the entire
magazine? Is this by sending the Unload command to LUN 0 to unload a tape
and sending the command to LUN 1 to unload the entire magazine?

Hi Michael,
Yes. Our DAT autoloader has a single SCSI port. LUN 0 is the tape drive and
LUN 1 is the media changer.
We have implemented magazine eject using the SSC Unload command directed to
LUN 1 (the media change) This is obviously not per standards hence my query
about adding some standard method of ejecting magazines via a SCSI command.
