This note addresses my action item from the Monday, 8 July, SA-SCSI 
Phy Study Group conference call.  (The action item is pasted below.)

Changing the drawing (but keeping the same equation for the proposed 
Compliance Interconnect) results in 10.9 dB at 3.0 GHz (vs. 11.4 dB 
at 3.125 GHz).  Regarding the 4 dB minimum "ISI loss" between 
bitrate/10 and bitrate/2, the actual C.I. equation yields 4.08 dB 
for both bitrates (3.125 and 3.0 Gb/s) since linear loss versus 
frequency is the dominant term in the equation.  Attached is a 
Mathcad file for anyone who wishes to explore the details.  I can 
provide the appropriately decorated graphic if the proposal is 
accepted.

Regarding whether this loss characteristic (aimed at modelling 20" 
of PCB) lines up with the existing SAS near- and far-end values, 
I briefly reviewed the original XAUI (10 Gigabit Ethernet) work at

While I do not believe this question has an easy answer, these docs 
describe XAUI's efforts to accomplish just this objective.  For
