1. Opening Remarks
John Lohmeyer, the T10 Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:10 a.m.,
Thursday November 8, 2001. He thanked Ron Roberts and Sondra Heiser of Adaptec
for hosting the meeting.
John said that NCITS Subgroup Membership forms and the T10 Mailing
Subscription form were available from the head table. He said that people
should use the NCITS forms to insure the NCITS Secretariat has the latest
membership information. These forms should be mailed directly to the NCITS
Secretariat.
As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves and a copy of the
attendance list was circulated. Copies of the draft agenda and general
information on T10 were made available to those attending.
2. Approval of Agenda
The draft agenda was approved with the following additions/changes:
10.2.1 Report transfer capabilities port control sub-mode page for SPI-4

The following agenda items were added/revised during the course of the
meeting:
14.3 SBP-3 Tentative Meeting Schedule
3. Attendance and Membership
The membership requirements were reviewed. NCITS rules permit one vote per
organization. An individual from a new organization must attend at least one
T10 plenary meeting as an Advisory Member. He/she may apply for voting
membership at this meeting, which becomes effective following adjournment of
the meeting. Voting privileges begin upon receipt by the NCITS Secretariat of
applicable fees for the membership year.
To maintain membership, organizations must pay the NCITS Service Fee ($800).
John briefly discussed the mailing fees. Complete pricing information is
contained in the 2001 membership form (available at
ftp://ftp.t10.org/t10/mem_form.txt).
There are also minimum attendance requirements to maintain voting membership
on T10. If a member organization fails to attend two of the last three T10
meetings, they are warned that failing to attend the next T10 meeting would
result in their membership being terminated.
The Chair said he had sent letters to 16 people from 10 organizations
informing them that their membership was in jeopardy due to non-attendance
(see 01-284r0) and that their membership would be terminated if they did not
attend this meeting. The following organizations were in attendance jeopardy:
Amphenol Interconnect
Ancot Corp.
Cisco Systems, Inc.
Congruent Software, Inc.
General Dynamics
Genroco, Inc.
Iomega Corp.
KnowledgeTek, Inc.
Ophidian Designs
Troika Networks, Inc.
All organizations in attendance jeopardy were present except:
Genroco, Inc.
Troika Networks, Inc.
Noting that air travel to the September meeting had been rendered impossible
by the terrorism in New York and Washington, John Lohmeyer moved that the
memberships of Genroco, Inc. and Troika Networks, Inc. be retained due to the
extraordinary circumstances. Doug Piper seconded the motion. The motion passed
on a vote of 38:0:0:8=46.
No organizations joined the committee at this meeting.
The T10 membership during the meeting was 46 organizations unchanged from 46
following the last meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of the people present at
the meeting and enclosure (2) is the current T10 membership list.
John Lohmeyer reminded members that failure to vote on two out of the last
three letter ballots also would result in membership jeopardy and then
reported on the status of companies that have not voted on recent letter
ballots (01-327r0).
4. Approval of Minutes - September `01 Meeting - Huntington Beach, CA
(T10/01-279r0)
The minutes were approved as written.
5. Document Distribution
Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal
directly with Monica Vago (mvago at itic.org) (202) 626-5741.
John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be in his
hands in electronic format by 10:30 a.m. on Thursday November 15, 2001.
Documents received after this time may go into a subsequent mailing.
John reminded the committee of the requirements for document submission.
Since T10 meets its document retention requirements by preparing mailings,
documents included in the mailing must be suitable for archiving. This means
that native-format and/or Portable Document Format (PDF) electronic originals
with proper identification must be submitted.
People can obtain T10 document numbers and revised T10 document numbers by
filling out a web form at http://www.t10.org/members/. The assigned T10
document number will be sent to the requestor by email. The requestor may
then reply to this email, including the document to be posted as an
attachment. The document will be automatically posted on the T10 web site.
T10 members can complete this entire process using their personal T10
password. John explained that members who do not know their password should
surf to the above URL and click on the "forgot password" link to have their
password sent to them via e-mail.
John noted that non-members can also use the above document number process,
but their requests will require approval by an administrator.
Minutes are available on the T10 World Wide Web page (see below), and are
distributed to the T10 Reflector.
To be added to the T10 Reflector, send an email to majordomo at t10.org with the
line 'subscribe t10' in the message body.
The NCITS Secretariat maintains a World Wide Web page at:

6. Call for Patents
This is a regular agenda item to identify any potential patent issues with
developing standards and technical reports.
A document is available from ANSI, "Procedures for the Development and
Coordination of American National Standards", at no charge. This document is
also on the WWW at http://www.ncits.org/help/ansi_sdo.html. Section 1.2.11
contains the ANSI patent policy. Amy Marasco manages patent issues for ANSI
and can be contacted at amarasco at ansi.org or 212-642-4954. Gene Milligan
prepared a useful "Handy dandy Technical Committee's Patents Guide", which is
available at ftp://ftp.t10.org/t10/document.99/99-291r0.pdf.
John presented a foil containing a summary of the ANSI patent policy prepared
by Gary Robinson. The summary is also included on the Rules and Procedures
(plus Patent Information) page on the T10 web site.

10.3.7 Proposed change to UA requirement on SET DEVICE IDENTIFIER command
(01-305r0) [Entzel]
This item was processed under agenda item 10.3.1.
10.4 Actions on Other Working Group Recommendations
No actions from other working groups were brought before the committee.
10.5 Automation Drive Interface (ADI) Study Group Report (01-329)
[Shuler/Entzel/Griswold]
Bob Griswold gave a report on the activities of the ADI study group
(01-329r0). Bob noted that a project proposal for a new standard will be
prepared for consideration in January.
10.6 A/V Direct-Access Project Proposal (01-337) [Johannson]
Peter Johannson presented 01-337r0, a project proposal AV Direct-access
Commands (AVD). The committee requested corrections in the proposal. Ron
Roberts moved that 01-337r1 (r0 as revised) be forwarded to NCITS for
processing as a new project proposal for a standard. Charles Monia seconded
the motion.
Concerns were raised about the assignment of operation codes to the commands
proposed by the new project. Peter stated a preference for using commands
without service actions. Concerns were raised about the relationship between
the 'rudimentary file system' proposed for the new command set and the OSD
device-based file system.
Ralph Weber asked that the proposal not be considered because it has not been
available for committee consideration for two weeks.
After some consideration, Peter asked that John Lohmeyer conduct a letter
ballot to approve the project proposal.
10.7 4KB Block Size [Aloisi]
John Lohmeyer reported that through Paul Aloisi, IDEMA has requested that T10
formally state that there are no problems with 4 KB block sizes in SCSI. He
described the responses to a T10 Reflector request on this topic. A couple
responses noted that there is a little variation in how various vendors
support changing the block size (some need additional mode parameters set
prior to formatting). However, no one noted any SCSI problems using disk
drives formatted to the 4KB block size.
In the absence of any additional comments from the committee, John asked Paul
Aloisi to report to IDEMA that there are no known SCSI standards problems with
supporting 4 KB block sizes.
Paul Aloisi took an action item to report to IDEMA that T10 knows of no SCSI
standards problems with supporting 4 KB block sizes.
11. ISO/IEC
11.1 ISO/IEC Report [Robinson]
Gary Robinson provided an ISO status report (01-341r0). Ralph Weber stated
that the report lists Gary's action items from the last meeting and indicates
which are complete and which are carryovers.
11.2 ISO/IEC Business [Robinson]
No ISO business was brought before the committee.
12. Liaison Reports
12.1 T11 Liaison Report [Snively]
Bob Snively gave the T11 liaison report contained in T10/01-312r0.
12.2 T13 Liaison Report [Colegrove]
Dan Colegrove provided an oral report to the committee and Pete McLean
provided the following electronic report:
T13 Liaison Report - October 31, 2001
T13 met last in Kauai, HI on October 23 through 25 with 19 people present.
Membership is currently 20 voting organizations.
The erratum for ATA/ATAPI-5 ANSI NCITS 340-2000 has been forwarded by NCITS to
ANSI for final approval and publishing.
Final review of the ATA/ATAPI-6 draft standard T13/1410D was completed and a
letter ballot has been issued to forward it to NCITS. The letter ballot closes
3 December.
Host Adapter Standard, T13/1510D, and Enhanced BIOS Services T13/1484D, were
both reviewed. It is expected that both of these draft standards may go to
letter ballot in December.
The format and new proposals were presented for ATA/ATAPI-7, T13/1532D.
Western Digital will host the next plenary meeting December 11 through 13 at
the Western Digital facility, 20511 Lake Forest Drive, Lake Forest, CA 92630.
The meeting will start at 10 AM so that the northern California folks can fly
down that morning.
For further T13 information access ftp.t13.org or www.t13.org.
12.3 SFF Industry Group [Allan]
Dal Allan provided the following electronic report:
Several specifications were approved for publication.
SFF-8045 40-pin SCA-2 Connector w/Parallel Selection
SFF-8067 40-pin SCA-2 Connector w/Bidirectional ESI
SFF-8075 PCI Card Version of SFP Cage
SFF-8111 1.8" drive form factor (60x70mm)
SFF-8120 1.8" drive form factor (78x54mm)
SFF-8452 Glitch Free Mating Connections for Multidrop Apps
A concern raised by the Transceiver SSWG which meets during T11 week related
to the issue of individuals or companies filing patents on ideas which came up
during open discussion. A written cure may be worse than the disease because
there is a matter of judgment involved, and that cannot be described
adequately in a policy. A proposal on words to be added to the Principles of
Operation will be included in the mailing.
SFF-8301 is an electronic copy of the 3.5" form factor specification, and is
only kept available through SFF because EIA standards are not available in an
electronic format. An errata or revision has to be processed and until then,
the SFF specification will not be consistent with the EIA standard.
12.4 IEEE 1394 [Johansson]
Peter Johannson made an oral report to the committee and provided the
following electronic report:
IEEE P1394b, High Performance Serial Bus---Amendment 2, has completed its BRC
process and a final draft has been prepared for short (10-day) recirculation
ballot November, 2001. This amendment extends Serial Bus to speeds in the
range of 800 Mbps to 1600 Mbps and provides for fiber-optic media. Contact the
Chair, David Wooten (DW at Cypress.com) for details.
IEEE P1394.1, High Performance Serial Bus Bridges, has completed its Sponsor
Ballot and, technically, meets IEEE criteria for approval. Because of
significant comments received, a BRC and eventual recirculation ballot are
anticipated this year. Contact the Chair, Peter Johansson (PJohansson at ACM.org)
for details.
IEEE P1394.3, Peer to Peer Data Transport, a protocol built upon SBP-2, also
completed its Sponsor Ballot. The BRC is close to the completion of its work
and anticipates approval of PPDT as a standard in February, 2002. Contact the
Vice Chair, Alan Berkema (Alan_Berkema at HP.com) for details.
The 1394 Trade Association Wireless working group is developing a "protocol
adaption layer" (PAL) to enable IEEE 1394 applications to interoperate with
like applications in IEEE P802.11e devices. Some of the work is active in the
IEEE P802.11e (quality of service) working group. Contact Steve.Bard at intel.com
for details.
12.5 SCSI Trade Association (STA) [Jones/Aloisi]
Paul Aloisi reported on the activities of STA and provided an electronic
report that can be found in 01-338r1.
12.6 IETF SCSI over IP [Black/Robinson]
Ed Gardner reported that an IETF meeting will be held in Salt Lake during the
week of December 10th. Marjorie Krueger reported that new revisions are
available for all the iSCSI related drafts.
12.7 NCITS H2 (Database Languages) [Hare]
John Lohmeyer reported that he believes there is no overlap between the OSD
project and the work going on in the H2 (Database) Technicial Committee.
Nonetheless, he will act as liaison to H2 and Keith Hare will act as liaison
to T10.
13. Review of Action Items
436 Gary Robinson will determine how ISO standards can reference ANSI
Technical Reports.
444 Gary Robinson will report to the JTC 1 TAG that T10 recommends that the
JTC1 TAG approve and forward the NWIP for SCSI - 3 Primary Commands - 2,
SPC-2, to JTC1 for further processing as an international standard.
446 Bill McFerrin will prepare MMC-3 revision 10g and 01-167r1.
447 John Lohmeyer will forward MMC-3 revision 10g and 01-167r1 to NCITS for
processing toward first public review.
448 John Lohmeyer will forward SDV revision 8b and 01-317r1 to NCITS for
approval as a technical report.
449 John Lohmeyer will forward SSM revision 5 and 01-303r1 to NCITS for
approval as a technical report.
450 Dave Peterson will prepare SSC-2 revision 7.
451 John Lohmeyer will conduct a letter ballot on forwarding SSC-2 revision
7 to first public review.
452 John Lohmeyer will forward 01-166r0 to NCITS for processing as new
project proposal for MMC-4 under the new rules.
453 Paul Aloisi will report to IDEMA that T10 knows of no SCSI standards
problems with supporting 4 KB block sizes.
454 John Lohmeyer will announce the call for SST editor on the T10
Reflector.
14. Meeting Schedule
The next plenary meeting of T10 will be Thursday January 17, 2002 in Houston,
TX at the Houston Marriott North at Greenspoint (281-875-4000), hosted by
Compaq. The meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.

John Lohmeyer stated that the July 2002 meeting dates conflict with an IETF
meeting week but that the dates cannot be moved and keep the meeting at the
contracted hotel.
Paul Aloisi moved that the hosts and locations for 2003, except January, be
approved. Erich Oetting seconded the motion. In the absence of any objections,
the motion passed unanimously.;
14.1 Meeting date change for May 2002 T10 Week [Daggett]
Due to difficulties arranging a hotel and a conflict with the N+I conference,
John Lohmeyer moved and Erich Oetting seconded that the May 2002 T10 meeting
week be moved one week earlier to the week of April 29 - May 3, 2002. The
motion passed 30:0:3:13=46.
14.2 Authorization of Working Group Meetings
John noted that the working group meetings are required to operate under the
same voting procedures as does T10 (that is, one vote per organization) and
the results of a working group are not binding on the parent committee. Ad
hoc groups should strive to achieve consensus prior to bringing issues to T10.
Cris Simpson moved that T10 authorize the T10-related meetings and events in
the list above that had not previously been approved through the end of
February 2002. Charles Monia seconded the motion. In the absence of any
objections, the motion passed unanimously.
14.3 SBP-3 Tentative Meeting Schedule
Peter Johannson provided the following tentative meeting schedule for the
SBP-3 working group:
January 21 - 22 (Waikoloa, HI)
March 12 - 13 (Dallas, TX)
April 30 - May 1 (Nashua, NH)
June 3 - 7 / 10 - 14 (Portland, OR) [two-day meeting one of those two weeks]
July 16 - 17 (Colorado Springs, CO) [two-day meeting that week]
15. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 12:10 p.m. on Thursday November 8, 2001.
