     At the last FC-Tape meeting I proposed a connector for use by FC-Tape 
     drives. An updated proposal is attached as a PDF document. The 
     following text provides a justification for the proposal and a 
     explantion of its features.
     
     At the next FC-Tape meeting I would like to review the proposal and 
     offer a justification for changing the pinout from the SFF_8067 
     specification. I would like to receive input and guage interest in 
     this proposal. Hopefully it can be submitted to the SFF committee the 
     following month.

     I have attached a proposal for a connector specification for a dual 
     ported Fibre Channel tape drive. The target drives would match or be 
     of similar size to the 5 1/4-inch form factor and conform to the 
     FC-TAPE technical report. This proposal is submitted at the request of 
     customers who would like to see a standard established for this class 
     of tape drives. It appears that the Small Form Factor Committee is the 
     appropriate body to establish this standard. The existing SFF-8067 
     specification is used as a base for this proposal as it is assumed 
     that most tape applications will be leveraged from existing disk 
     solutions. The SFF-8067 does not have adequate power capacity on the 
     5-Volt supply line for use by this class of products.
     
     All of the features of the original standard are retained even though 
     some of them (spindle sync, for example) have no tape application in 
     the hope that this specification could have broader application and be 
     used, for example, by a 5 1/4-inch disk drive.
     
     The connector proposed is the 68-pin connector of the same family as 
     the SFF-8067 40-pin connectors. This connector is proposed because it 
     cannot be accidentally plugged into an 80-pin SCSI connector or a 
     40-pin Fibre Channel SFF-8067 connector. Yet since it is from the same 
     family so the industry experience with this connector can be leveraged 
     and the same connector vendors will be able to participate.
     
     The pin-out in the proposal addresses the power limitations of the 
     SFF-8067 proposal by adding additional power and ground pins. The 
     number of 3.3-Volt pins is not increased to the same level as the 
     5-Volt pins. It does not appear that applications are using the 
     3.3-Volt capability and many applications are shifting from 3.3 Volts 
     to 2.5 Volts. The 3.3-Volt pins could be eliminated from the proposal.
     
     With the addition of more ground lines the spacing between the 
     differential pairs has been increased. Another pin-out change has been 
     made to the order of the differential pairs. The SFF-8067 grouped the 
     receiver pins from both ports together at one end of the connector and 
     the transmitter pins from both ports were grouped together at the 
     other end of the connector. This proposal changes the order of the 
     connector to group the receivers and transmitters of the same port 
     together which would match either an integrated or discrete solution 
     better than the existing standard. The pin-out in this proposal 
     "mirrors" the pin-out of the two ports, favoring the layout 
     requirements of an integrated solution over a discrete solution where 
     the ports would be "side by side". Integrated transceivers are 
     expected to be the most common configuration for this proposal.
     
     Finally this proposal includes nine pins for a library controller 
     connection.  We have had a request from our library customers to 
     combine all of the required connections in one connector including 
     this interface.
