Request Sense during immediate commands

For as long ago as I have source, Iomega drives
use x2 x04 x01 - "becoming ready" - to report that
some other command - immediate or disconnected -
possesses the drive.

However, to report a format in progress, they use
x2 x04 x04 and fill in the percent complete field.

Is this not general practice?
