Increasing the extended message length would be a problem I think with some
automated silicon. Some of the older protocol state machines store messages
in ASIC registers, and this may make them run out of room. While you could
say "you are changing the chip I/O drives - change the protocol state machine
at the same time", these are two quite different
design tasks, and could dealy the adoption of Fast-20 by people if we
force their digital design people to get into the act.
