Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the chairman, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday June 19, 1989. He thanked Patrick Green of AMD for hosting the meeting and he also thanked Classic Conferences for arranging the meeting. As is customary, the attendees introduced themselves. A copy of the X3T9.2 membership list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to all attendees. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription forms were made available for new attendees. 2. Approval of Agenda The agenda was approved with the following additions: 6.5 X3B7 Report 9.3 Stewart and Thomas & Betts Connector Proposal [Hatch] 10.8 Comments on SCSI-2 Received on the SCSI BBS [Lohmeyer] 10.9 AWRE bit and WRITE Command Issue [Snively] 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend one plenary meeting as an observer before he/she may apply for voting membership via a letter to the chairman of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The chairman stated that since the last meeting the following change had occurred in the voting membership: Adrienne Turenne has replaced Ken Post as the Archive Corp. principal. During the meeting several membership changes were received: Robert Bellino became the principal member for Madison Cable. Duc Pham became the principal member for Tandem Computers and Pete Tobias became his alternate. Ken Post became the principal member for Future Domain. Aspen Peripherals has been acquired by Storage Technology so John Herron and George Reichenberg were changed to observer status. The net effect of these changes plus the two terminations for non-attendance (below), is that X3T9.2 remains at 78 voting organizations. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees at the meeting. Enclosure (2) is the X3T9.2 membership changes since the last minutes and enclosure (3) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The chairman stated that he had sent jeopardy letters to all representatives of the following organizations: Ancot Corp., Burndy Corp., Datacopy Corp., Honeywell Bull, Inc., ITT Cannon, Laserdrive Ltd., NEC, Northern Telecom, Inc., Optotech, Inc., and Prime Computer, Inc. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended the June plenary meeting. Representatives were present from all of the organizations except: Honeywell Bull, Inc. (BULL HN) and Prime Computer, Inc. The principals and alternates from these organizations were be changed to observer status. 4. Approval of Minutes - April Meeting St. Petersburg Beach, FL (89-049) The minutes were approved as written. 5. Document Distribution The last mailing was 536 pages of which 294 were the SCSI-2 Rev 9 document printed half-size. The chairman had not received any complains about the quality of the mailing. Approximately six people complained that they did not receive the May mailing. This was apparently due to confusion over the two separate fees. Generally, they had paid one of their fees, but had not paid the other fee. Members with mailing subscription problems should deal directly with Katrina Gray of the X3 Secretariat. She can be reached at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the July mailing be sent to him by July 17, 1989. The minutes of the fiber channel working group meetings will no longer be included in X3T9.2 mailings due to their large size. The fiber channel working group minutes continue to be available in the X3T9.3 mailing. The following new or revised documents were distributed and/or discussed at the meeting: Document Doc Date Author Description of Document ------------- -------- --------------- --------------------------------------- X3T9.2/89-79 6/11/89 B. Liaison Reports 6.1 ISO Gene Milligan was unable to attend the meeting. John Lohmeyer noted that the merger of SC-13 and SC-83 has been approved and the new group will be called SC-25. The SC-13 activities will be assigned to a working group of SC-25. The September meeting is still planned for the week of September 25 in Copenhagen. Later in the meeting, John Lohmeyer read the following report, which Gene Milligan sent the following to him: Based upon the recommendations of X3T9, IR/89-9 transmitted the HSC, FDDI HRC, and FDDI SMF-PMD through X3 for submission to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 13 for consideration. The SCSI-2 has not been officially transmitted pending the X3T9.2 and perhaps X3T9 decisions regarding Revision 9. Gene Milligan, the X3T9 IR, has requested permission to host an SC 13 working group meeting to exclusively address SMD-E comments. If a working group offer to host is approved, it would only be extended if we are unable to sell the original X3T9 understanding of the fast track procedure. IR/89-10 addresses both of these issues. Regardless of the outcome of IR/89-10, X3T9 should consider the letter ballot comments which could potentially impact the SMD-E ANS. Although the specific outcome of the April 20 potential merger meeting in Muenchen is not fully understood regarding the status of the proposed merger, a pattern is emerging. The significant portion of those favoring the merger or of those planning to implement the merger are planning to place serial interfaces in one working group and parallel interfaces in another. In the best case such working groups would be held in sequence at the same location. In the worst case the meetings would occur simultaneously at opposite poles of the globe. Such a division of work would also create the specter of SCSI being the responsibility of two different working groups when it is ported to fiber optics or coax. In any case, it would split the X3T9 activity between different working groups (in this case a working group is approximately equivalent to SC 13). Mr. Milligan has sent a private letter to the head of the Danish delegation discussing the tradeoffs of the proposal. The FDDI PMD DIS 9314-3 ISO letter ballot passed with comments. A 19 May letter from Ross proposes resolution of the PMD DIS letter ballot comments. There was an ISO letter ballot questionnaire on the issue of whether IS 6548 Process I/O should be reaffirmed. The IR suggests that T9 should be prepared to respond to any questions as to why the U.S.A. failed to submit a vote. With the matrix of questions and the small number off votes it is somewhat difficult to judge the results. A camera ready copy is still required for the following: Document: Description: Editor: IS 9317 Tape Streaming Cart/Cas Drive Domshy IS 9318-2 IPI-2 Disk Wire IS 9318-3 IPI-3 Disk Truestedt An ISO style copy is still required for the following: Document: Description: Editor: DIS 9318-4 IPI-3 Tape Herron DIS 9318-5 IPI-2 Tape Reichenberg DIS 9318-6 IPI Enhanced Physical Sanderson It is expected that an ISO letter ballot will be issued shortly on the ESDI DIS 10222. For those interested in additional references, Mr. Milligan has provided a document list of all current documents relating to SC 13 or known to be relating to X3T9's international responsibilities. He has also provided a cryptic summary of SC 13 projects. 6.2 IT8 John Lohmeyer reported that he had received a letter (X3T9.2/89-77) from William K. Smythe, the Secretary for IT8, requesting that X3T9.2 assign two Device Types for IT8's usage. The requested descriptions of the device types are "Graphics Arts Output Device" and "Graphics Arts Host Device". Mr. Smythe stated in his letter that these device types will be used by ASC IT8 in its development of on-line interfaces for the graphic art/prepress industry. Several people voiced concerns over whether device types defined by another committee would remain consistent with the other device types. Dal Allan provide some background on the graphics industry and pointed out it would be impractical for X3T9.2 to attempt to control all SCSI device types. There was some discussion over why two codes are needed. John Lohmeyer accepted an action item to get clarification on the request from IT8. 6.3 SCSI-2 Common Access Method Committee Report Dal Allan reported. There had been two CAM meetings since the last X3T9.2 meeting, one in Wichita May 10 and another in San Jose June 8. At the Wichita meeting, Jerry Marazas described the A-BIOS support for SCSI on the PS/2. This spurred interest in OS/2. Microsoft is now participating and has appointed Ted Stockwell as liaison. There is a need for a static configuration during the dynamic booting process. The UNIX group has completed much of their work. The ATA document is nearly complete. What happens during reset is still not finalized. The next meeting is in Chicago on Wednesday, July 12. The ATA, OS/2, and UNIX meetings will be held Tuesday afternoon, July 11. 6.4 Fiber Channel John Lohmeyer reported that he had attended the May 22-23, 1989 meeting of the Fiber Channel working group in Minneapolis. Some tentative decisions have been made, but after a year of work there is still no working document and there are a wide range of opinions on what the Fiber Channel should encompass. Of course, the IPI and SCSI people want a high-speed upgrade for their current physical layers. Longer lengths are also desired, but not hundreds of kilometers. The HSC people dominated the meeting attendance since the meeting was held in conjunction with an HSC working group meeting. They seem to want an extender for HSC applications that would permit both longer lengths and higher bandwidths, literally including global networks of supercomputers. These applications are quite different and caused difficulties in reaching consensus on many of the details. John stated that both the IPI and SCSI groups need to participate more actively in Fiber Channel or their interests will be forgotten. This may be facilitated by the plan to hold some of the Fiber Channel working group meetings on Wednesday of the plenary week beginning in August. A key agreement was almost reached: the group agreed that the Fiber Channel should use the 8B/10B coding scheme proposed by IBM provided IBM is willing to conform to the ANSI patent policy. The next Fiber Channel meeting is July 17-18 at Tandem Computer, Location 100, 10555 Ridgeview Court, Cupertino, CA. Contact Jim Smith at 408- 996-6545. The following Fiber Channel working group meeting will be held August 23 in Colorado Springs, CO. 6.5 X3B7 Report Bill Spence requested a report on recent X3B7 activities. Dal Allan reported briefly. X3B7 has a document for concerning diagnostic functions for SCSI. It is based heavily on the SEND DIAGNOSTIC and RECEIVE DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS commands. Disk companies have not been strong participants in the development of the X3B7 document. It may be a good idea for X3T9.2 to review this document and make recommendations. John Lohmeyer reported that IEEE P1149 is working on a testability bus standard which uses four additional signals to do detailed testing of devices. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. Snively, Nitza, McGrath, Eneboe will analyze and propose a solution for error handling of tagged commands for the May working group meeting. Complete. 2. Dan Davies will propose a replacement for the QIC-600 density code to support 1.3 GByte tapes. Complete. 3. Larry Lamers will reword the paragraphs describing ASC and ASCQ hierarchy on page 7-46. Complete. 4. Larry Lamers will prepare SCSI-2 R9 for the next X3T9.2 mailing. Complete. 5. The X3T9.2 connector vendors will prepare statements concerning their business intentions on SCSI-2 connector patents and patent applications. Carry over. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 ESDI The chairman said that the second public review on ESDI closes at noon on Tuesday June 20. One comment had been received as of Friday June 16 (see 8.1.1). He stated that he would call Marilyn Kornfeld of the X3 Secretariat at lunch time on Tuesday to determine whether any further comments are received. None were -- see item 10.4. 8.1.1 Maxtor Public Review comment (X3T9.2/89-068, -84) Mark Rice of Maxtor Corp. submitted a public review comment on ESDI listing 5 points. Dal Allan, the ESDI document editor, had reviewed the Maxtor comment and felt that the points represented misunderstanding of the intent of the document and could be resolved by clarifying the ESDI document. He stated that these were not substantive changes and submitted 89-84 which details the editorial changes that he believed would resolve Maxtor's comments. Mark Rice reviewed this changes and agreed that they resolved his comments without making a substantive change to the ESDI document (See item 10.4). 8.2 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/89-066) Twenty-nine people attended a working group meeting hosted by John Lohmeyer of NCR Corporation May 8-9 in Wichita, KS. The principal work was to resolve the X3T9 letter ballot comments on SCSI-2. Unfortunately, Gene Milligan, the undisputed leader in SCSI-2 commenting, weighting in at 477 comments, was unable to attend the meeting. The working group persevered and addressed most of Gene's comments, leaving those after section 9 for the editors. The result is SCSI-2 Revision 9, which was in the mailing. The working group also addressed several other issues brought up either at the April plenary meeting or at the working group meeting. The results of these issues are documented in the minutes of the working group meeting and include: a) adding an implementors note on the transition voltage for single- ended receivers b) recommending the new-style single-ended terminator c) fixing the tagged queuing error handling d) correcting the MESSAGE PARITY ERROR handling e) replacing the QIC-600 density code f) clarifying when a target can change signals following SELECTION phase g) clarifying the interaction of the FORMAT UNIT command and saving mode pages h) clarifying the meaning of the SEND DIAGNOSTIC UntOfl & DevOfl bits i) clarifying the affect of the ARRE and AWRE bits on the WRITE AND VERIFY and VERIFY commands j) clarifying the REQUEST SENSE command response to an invalid logical unit Dal Allan pointed out that the working group minutes failed to record a point made during the discussion of item (c), above. The working group agreed that the error handling of mixing tagged and untagged commands should not be affected by the addition of the autosense feature which was proposed for SCSI-3. 9. Old Business 9.1 Cable Testing Results (Tuesday a.m.) Kurt Chan presented some additional results of cable testing of cable- connector combinations. The results indicate that Paul Boulay's termination (regulated to 2.8 volts) works for all combinations. The next project is to look at differences of 4 meter shielded cable. Problems occur if the terminators are not decoupled. The capacitor must be at the terminators. Without the capacitors 2.5 to 7.0 volt oscillations occur on the TERMPWR line. He recommended 2.2 uf high- frequency capacitor on the TERMPWR line at each terminator to decouple supply. The capacitor must after the protection diode. Jeff Stai moved and Robert Snively seconded that Kurt Chan's IMPLEMENTORS NOTE with the addition of "high-frequency" be added to SCSI-2 Revision 10. The motion passed unanimously. Peter Blackford of ASTRO Wire & Cable gave a presentation on wire and cable. The first slide showed the change in impedance from the core to layer 1 to layer 2 in shielded round cable (25 pair used for testing) comparing differential and open collector. The impedance drops as proximity to the outer cable shield increases. The differences reverse with nonshielded cable; the impedance goes up near the outside and is lower at the core. What this suggests is that pin assignment should be selective depending on conductor location in the cable and different for open collector and differential. A buffered shield reduces the spread of impedance change within the cable. The addition of a low dielectric layer between the outside layer and the shield helps but does not eliminate the change. The REQ/ACK should be in the core pair, with DATA on layer 1. TERMPWR in layer 2. Bob Bellino of Madison Cable explained that in the IPI and HSC cables they used two layers (no core conductors -- just filler) and different insulation thickness on the two layers to minimize the impedance change. This technique does significantly affect the cable OD (12 mils increase 0.400 max. OD). They used ten pairs in layer 1 and 15 pairs in layer 2. 9.2 Connector Vendor Statements as to Patent Intentions (Tuesday a.m.) John Lohmeyer reported that AMP had sent him a letter regarding their intention to enter into license negotiations with any connector vendor that wished to use their patent # 4,808,125 to construct high density connectors for SCSI-2. During the meeting, Joel Urban of Fujitsu submitted a letter (89-85) saying that Fujitsu would continue to manufacture the SCSI-2 high-density connector and that they are negotiating with AMP for a license. Larry Lamers said that the AMP statement does not comply with the ANSI patent policy. John Lohmeyer pointed out that AMP is not obliged to comply in that it is possible to comply with SCSI-2 without infringing AMP's patent. 9.3 Stewart and Thomas & Betts Connector Proposal [Hatch] David Hatch gave a presentation on the Daisy-GEN connector system and passed around a prototype. He also stated that a patent has been applied for and that, if the proposal is accepted, Stewart Stamping would comply with the ANSI patent policy should the patent be granted. David Hatch moved and Bob Snively seconded that the Daisy-GEN connector be added to SCSI-2 as an alternative non-shielded connector. The motion failed, 6 in favor and 32 opposed. 10. New Business 10.1 Review of changes in SCSI-2 Revision 9 [Lamers] Larry Lamers reported on several changes made in Revision 9. He also noted that there were still problems using the document comparison program so no change information was shown. 10.1.1 ATN timing added to Selection Time-out Procedure Jeff Stai had requested that the time for releasing the ATN signal be added to the Selection Time-out Procedure in section 5.1.3.1. Previously, the timing of this signal's release had not been stated. The Rev 9 document now says that ATN is to be released at the same time as the SEL signal. 10.1.2 Why is the PS bit missing from the Disconnect-Reconnect Page? An omission caused the PS bit to be deleted from all of the mode pages in section 7. This will be corrected in Revision 10. 10.1.3 Notched Drive Page affects on the Format Device Page. Some comments were provided by Steve Cornaby. John Lohmeyer requested that the descriptions of the affected fields in the Format Device Page refer to the Notched Drive Page. Also, the polarity of the ND bit in the description of the alteration of these fields is reversed. These descriptions will be corrected in Revision 10. 10.2 Questions from the editors to the committee [Lamers] 10.2.1 Should tagged queuing apply to target routines? No, while architecturally possible, there is no current advantage to doing so. The technical editors will replace I_T_x_Q with I_T_L_Q and check for internal document consistency. 10.2.2 Should CLEAR QUEUE cause an unit attention condition? John and Larry had a collective memory lapse as to why they put this item on the agenda. 10.2.3 How does the IP Modifier of FORMAT UNIT work when there are multiple logical blocks per physical block? The address will be overwritten. The editors will add the following to the implementors note: "The lowest numbered logical block or part thereof that occurs within the physical block is written in." 10.2.4 If a target implements any command with an immediate bit, does it have to implement deferred errors? If the command would have returned CHECK CONDITION status had the Immed bit not been set then a deferred error shall reported. This also applies to write-back operations. 10.2.5 Should the QUEUE FULL status be a message? Deferred until SCSI-3. 10.2.6 Should we define a BUSY message? Deferred until SCSI-3. Incorrect Initiator Connection: This came up as part of the discussion of BUSY message. The DISCONNECT and RELEASE RECOVERY messages were removed from the list. A forward reference to section 6.5.2 will be added to the glossary definition of reconnection. The concept that the abort messages must occur during the first MESSAGE OUT phase to avoid an incorrect initiator connection will be reinstated. 10.2.7 Why does ABORT clear ECAs, but CLEAR QUEUE does not? After some discussion, it was decided that ECAs should only be cleared by the RELEASE RECOVERY and BUS DEVICE reset messages. ABORT will be changed to not clear ECAs. The second paragraph of the CLEAR QUEUE message will be modified and added to the the ABORT and ABORT TAG descriptions. A change is also required in the first paragraph of 6.7, ECA Condition. 10.2.8 Does an ECA suspend the command queue for all logical units on the target? This depends on the target design. The standard will remain silent on this issue. Some designs may optimize recovery options will other designs may optimize performance. 10.3 Review of new documents X3T9.2/89-79 Practical Proposal Re SDTR Responsibility [Spence]: This document proposes a method for initiators to work with targets that do not initiate SDTR after a power cycle. Targets are required to do so, but many provide a means to disable this function so that they can operate with older, non-synchronous host adapters. Bill proposed adding an implementors note suggesting this method. Bill Spence moved and Jeff Stai seconded that the implementors note be added to SCSI-2 Rev 10. The motion carried 27 in favor and 5 opposed. X3T9.2/89-80 Proposal to provide function of EXTENDED IDENTIFY [Snively]: This proposal would provide a data stream selection identifier to the SEND MESSAGE and GET MESSAGE commands in the communications device command set. This replaces the EXTENDED IDENTIFY concept that was previously removed from the message system. Bob Snively moved and Jeff Stai seconded that X3T9.2/89-80 be incorporated into SCSI-2 Rev 10. The motion passed unanimously. 10.4 Forwarding motion for ESDI Dal Allan moved and Larry Lamers seconded that X3T9.2 recommend to X3T9 that ESDI Revision 3a be substituted for BSR X3.170-198X (ESDI Rev. 3) as a non-substantive clarification. This clarification resolves the Maxtor Public Review comment. Since no substantive changes were made, X3T9.2 recommends that ESDI be progressed to X3 Letter Ballot. Search Command Modifications (88-002) [Stai] 5. Expanded RelAdr Bit Definition (88-007) [Boulay] 6. Autoconfiguration SSWG (88-69R1, 88-092R0, & 88-100R0) [Marazas, Nitza, McGrath, Boulay] 7. Error Handling Action Codes (88-127) [Penokie] 8. Autosense [Nitza] 9. Request For Data DAT Device Type [Andrews] 10. Documentation Layering [Stephens] 11. Single-Cable 16-bit Wide SCSI [Penokie, Lohmeyer, Lamers) 12. Alternate Physical Layers (e.g., fiber optics) 13. LOGICAL UNIT RESET Message Proposal (89-058) [Lohmeyer] 14. Single-cable 16-bit SCSI Proposal [Penokie, Lamers, Lohmeyer] 10.7 High-Density Connector EMI Concerns (X3T9.2/89-76) (Tuesday a.m.) This letter from Rick Coulson of BiiN states that the high-density connectors do not meet the EMI seal requirements when used in VME-style card cages. The committee offered several ways to address this problem including: 1) use gaskets that are available 2) the sheet metal can be dished 3) the "legs" can be extended 4) the connector body can be extended or 5) use a bulkhead connector with pigtails. No change is needed in the SCSI-2 draft standard. 10.8 Comments on SCSI-2 Received on the SCSI BBS [Lohmeyer] In area 5 of the SCSI Bulletin Board, messages #114 & 115 from Jeff Stai of May 23, and responses 116 & 117 from John Lohmeyer of May 24 regarding several issues were discussed. John's proposed corrections were accepted: Why processor devices are not allowed to send AEN data to other devices? Section 7.2.5.1, par 7, on item 2 change to "For all other device types this bit is reserved." Page 7-38 change "Available Length" to "Buffer Capacity". Page 8-39 fix Table 8-25, first byte, "Control Byte" should be "Reserved". Global: Change "Control Byte" to "Control". Add number conventions (ala. ESDI) to the glossary. Page 13-34, Delete WP bit from the table and mark this field reserved. Page 8-63 Modify the Retention Priority fields in Table 8-48. Jim McGrath's proposed IMPLEMENTORS NOTE on qualifying the RST signal was accepted for SCSI-2 Rev 10. 10.9 AWRE bit and WRITE Command Issue [Snively] Bob Snively brought up several minor issues with the AWRE bit description in Section 8.3.3.6. The description was relaxed somewhat to allow the target to reallocate a logical block when an error occurs and it is able to recovery the data from any source (buffer, initiator, medium). But the target is not required to verify that data written is correctly written -- that is, setting the AWRE bit does not convert all WRITE commands into WRITE AND VERIFY commands. The discussion resulted in several other improvements to the AWRE and ARRE descriptions. 11. SCSI-3 Activities There was no significant activity on SCSI-3 since the last meeting. 12. Review of Action Items 1. The X3T9.2 connector vendors will prepare statements concerning their business intentions on SCSI-2 connector patents and patent applications. 2. John Lohmeyer will get clarification on the device type request from IT8. 3. Larry Lamers and John Lohmeyer will prepare SCSI-2 Revision 10. 4. Dal Allan will prepare ESDI Rev 3a and send it to John Lohmeyer. 5. John Lohmeyer will request X3T9 to substitute ESDI Revision 3a for ESDI Revision 3 to resolve the Maxtor public review comment without substantive changes. 6. John Lohmeyer will transmit SCSI-2 Revision 10 to X3T9 for further processing. 13.
