X3T9.2/89-068 Marilyn Kornfeld X3 Secretariat 311 First Street, N.W. Suite 500 Washington, DC 20001 May 5, 1989 Dear Ms. Kornfeld, Maxtor Corporation offers the following comments on the ESDI revision 3 document (X3.170-198x). 1) The note on page 138 of Appendix K.1 seems to contradict the description of master mode and master control mode in K.3 on page 139. 2) The set configuration command would be more useful if there was a way to specify an unsynchronize mode as in the SCSI-2 document. There is a code available that could be used for this purpose. Can this feature be added to the ESDI document? 3) The output of the SLAVE SYNC and MASTER SYNC pulses is not clearly defined for all cases. Does a drive operating in master mode output just a SLAVE SYNC pulse or does it output a SLAVE SYNC pulse and a MASTER SYNC pulse?. 4) The method of using rotation offset when operating in master control mode is not described. The SCSI-2 standard specifically states that rotation offset is not supported when in master control mode. Can the ESDI document be clarified on this point? 5) In section 7.18.3 on synchronized sector offsets it is not clear whether the offset is advanced or retarded. Can the ESDI document be clarified on this point? Best Regards, Mark S. Rice Maxtor Corp. 211 River Oaks Pkwy San Jose, CA 95134
