Gerry Houlder opened the meeting, showing the agenda and discussion of
goals for the SMR study group. The agenda and SMR goals presented are shown
in T10 document 13-142r0->
http://www.t10.org/cgi-bin/ac.pl?t=d&f=13-142r0.pdf
Jorge Campello presented an introduction to SMR technology. His
presentation is shown in T10 document 13-148r0 ->
http://www.t10.org/cgi-bin/ac.pl?t=d&f=13-148r0.pdf.
Tim Feldman presented his ideas for Cooperatvely managed SMR. His
presentation is shown in T10 document 13-143r0 ->
http://www.t10.org/cgi-bin/ac.pl?t=d&f=13-143r0.pdf.
Jorge's and Tim's presentions were well received by the group, with most of
the attendees participating in discussion during the presentations. Some
key points in the discussions were:
* SMR is a technology that is needed for disk drives to continue areal
density improvements at the accustomed rate.
* Drive managed SMR will happen, but this can result in large variations
in drive performance instead of the relatively predictable performace that
is now provided.
* The Cooperatively managed model can result in predictable performance
with relatively small effort by host file systems.
Another SMR study group meeting is planned for Thursday July 18, 3:15 pm to
6:00 pm MDT. The meeting will be located in Colorado Springs, in
conjunction with T10 meetings scheduled for that week. A Webex and
teleconference will be set up by Gerry Houlder so that the meeting can be
attended by folks that are not attending the T10 meetings. The Webex
details will be posted on the T10 web site and announced on the T10
reflector one month before the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 12:00 noon.
