I am also interested in the rationale for the Enclosure Logical
Identifier. It does appear in the SMP REPORT GENERAL function
response in SPL-2.
At least two SAS-2 expander devices on the market have a tightly
bound SES device. The ELI could be used to establish "who belongs
to what" if there were multiple expanders in a big disk array.
Theoretically the Device Identification VPD page could also be
used to establish that but the SES implementations I have seen
are sub-standard in that area.
