Intel would like to discuss the issue of powering-off a drive with media
present. While this is desirable for ZPODD, it is imperative the issue be
discussed relative to system hibernation and power-off. I will prepare a
background paper on the subject and submit it early next week.

Basically ODD manufactures may not say that you can move/shake/transfer an
unit that has a disc in it.
In any position, a pickup head of ODD is under the (on the) disc surface. The
pickup head cannot escape from the disc like a HDD. So there is no park
for the ODD that has a disc.
I have a question that can your driver software turn off your HDD power that
Security Feature works on it?
Basically on DVD/BD discs, user may run software that uses secure functions
CSS, CPRM, AACS). Those secure functions may be managed by the application
software. The management will be outside of OS/chip-set driver. When AACS Bus
Encryption runs, you should not turn off the ODD power even if the ODD has
To discuss an item, Fuji group needs explanation about requirements,
information and solutions as a proposal.
I think members welcome your proposal.

Hello Mt.Fuji Members,
Intel would like to continue the discussion of powering off a drive with
>From past conversations at Mt.Fuji plenary meetings this year I$B!G(Bm
about the potential for drive or media failure during any power-off scenario
where media is present. The recent Mt.Fuji v8 draft rev93 has the following
statement in section 15.2.2: $B!H!D(Bputting the logical unit into the home
is and removing a disc from the logical unit are necessary before the
of the power supply to the logical unit$B!I(B and shortly after that
disc and tray closed condition is the home position.$B!I(B Does this
imply that the
only way to safely power-off an ODD (even on system shutdown) is to eject the
media first and that the Sleep-to-Off state transition is not sufficient?
We would also like the Mt.Fuji group to take up the discussion of adding a
mechanism that would allow the OS to initiate a home position action on the
drive in order to support removing power when media is present. Would
manufacturers please describe how their drives today support moving the head
the home position, and what would be necessary to add this in the case that
is not currently supported?
