Paul,

Any vendor that uses key references is responsible for ensuring that key
references are unique to the set of keys that the vendor is using. I
thought that Roger Cummings concern was that he would get duplicate key
references from different vendors. This is an extremely low probability
but not 0. As a result I was addressing this issue by having the key
server provide the T10 vendor ID of the manufacturer's drives that the
key references could be used on. I do agree that this is of little value
since this information is also available in the Inquiry command.

=20

I don't believe that T10 should be in the business of identifying key
management servers. That is why we added the statement in the model
section...

=20

" The method by which keys and key reference numbers become known to the
device server is outside the scope of this standard."

=20

Any vendor providing key references to a client application will have to
address how this process will work (out of band) and that is where these
issues need to be resolved, not in this specification. =20

=20

As far as your concern about the device server knowing which key
management server provided the key. That should be built into the key
reference, if not then that vendor is not generating key references
correctly. The device server will check the key reference against a list
of known key references that it supports and reject the reference if it
is not known to it. This is when the device server would report a check
condition with the ASC/ASCQ set to "KEY REFERENCE NOT FOUND",

Really, because it is not so clear to me? Is the T10 Vendor ID that of
the device server that the Set Data Encryption page is sent to? If so,
what is the value in that? Or, does the T10 Vendor ID identify the key
management server? That would make more sense. It certainly is
possible that the key management is being done in the tape drive (or
whatever is interpreting the Set Data Encryption page). It is also
possible that the key management is being done outside the device server
by an entity that is accessible to the device server through some
out-of-band method. What if the key management server does not have a
T10 Vendor ID? For instance, what if it is just a software application
running on one of the servers in a network? Maybe we should have the
capability of reporting which key management servers are accessible to
the device server and then the Key Reference must use one of those
identifiers with each Key Reference is supplies?

=20

All of this came about over a worry that the vendor unique key
identifier was not a good enough way of identifying a key. I don't
think we have solved this problem yet.

Dwayne,=20

Yes, I think it does. It becomes clear that the Vendor Specific Key is
both the T10 Vendor ID and the Vendor Specific Key Reference and that
both will be used for the OOB method to get the key.=20

My intention was the T10 Vendor ID + the Vendor Specific Key Reference
as a pair.=20
 =20
Does the following change make this clearer?=20
 =20
Replace=20
 =20
If the KEY FORMAT field is 01h, the KEY field shall contain the T10
VENDOR INDENTIFICATION field, specified in "T10 Vendor ID Based
Designator Format" section of SPC-4, followed immediately by a Vendor
Specific Key Reference identifying the Key to be used to encrypt or
decrypt data.=20

with the following...=20
 =20
If the KEY FORMAT field is 01h, the KEY field shall contain the
information shown in the following table. =20
 =20
Table YX - vendor specific key reference elements:=20

Byte

Description=20

00 - 07

T10 vendor identification, this element of the KEY field is provided to
associate the key reference to a specific vendor.=20

08 - n

vendor specific key reference, this element of the KEY field identifies
the Key to be used by the device server to encrypt or decrypt data

 =20
See SPC-4 for a description of the T10 vendor identification field
element.=20
 =20
If this looks OK to you I will revise my proposal one more time before
Paul incorporates it into 05-446=20

I was concerned about the vagueness of what is used as the reference to
be used in a vendor specific manner. Is it both the T10 Vendor ID + the
Vendor Specific Key Reference as a pair, or only the Vendor Specific Key
Reference.=20

I thought there was supposed to be some text about how the T10 vendor ID
is used. More specifically, is the T10 Vendor ID supposed to be part of
the reference value used to get the key or not.=20
