Paul,

Thanks for pointing out some weaknesses. I see your points and agree.

Really, because it is not so clear to me? Is the T10 Vendor ID that of=20
the device server that the Set Data Encryption page is sent to? If so,=20
what is the value in that? Or, does the T10 Vendor ID identify the key=20
management server? That would make more sense. It certainly is possible=20
that the key management is being done in the tape drive (or whatever is=20
interpreting the Set Data Encryption page). It is also possible that the=20
key management is being done outside the device server by an entity that=20
is accessible to the device server through some out-of-band method. What=20
if the key management server does not have a T10 Vendor ID? For instance, =

what if it is just a software application running on one of the servers in =

a network? Maybe we should have the capability of reporting which key=20
management servers are accessible to the device server and then the Key=20
Reference must use one of those identifiers with each Key Reference is=20
supplies?
=20
All of this came about over a worry that the vendor unique key identifier=20
was not a good enough way of identifying a key. I don?t think we have=20
solved this problem yet.

Dwayne,=20

Yes, I think it does. It becomes clear that the Vendor Specific Key is=20
both the T10 Vendor ID and the Vendor Specific Key Reference and that both =

will be used for the OOB method to get the key.=20

Kevin,=20
 =20
My intention was the T10 Vendor ID + the Vendor Specific Key Reference as=20
a pair.=20
 =20
Does the following change make this clearer?=20
 =20
Replace=20
 =20
If the KEY FORMAT field is 01h, the KEY field shall contain the T10 VENDOR =

INDENTIFICATION field, specified in ?T10 Vendor ID Based Designator=20
Format? section of SPC-4, followed immediately by a Vendor Specific Key=20
Reference identifying the Key to be used to encrypt or decrypt data.=20

with the following?=20
 =20
If the KEY FORMAT field is 01h, the KEY field shall contain the=20
information shown in the following table. =20
 =20
Table YX ? vendor specific key reference elements:=20

Byte
Description=20
00 ? 07
T10 vendor identification, this element of the KEY field is provided to=20
associate the key reference to a specific vendor.=20
08 ? n
vendor specific key reference, this element of the KEY field identifies=20
the Key to be used by the device server to encrypt or decrypt data

 =20
See SPC-4 for a description of the T10 vendor identification field=20
element.=20
 =20
If this looks OK to you I will revise my proposal one more time before=20

I was concerned about the vagueness of what is used as the reference to be =

Kevin I thought that I covered that with the following statement.=20

I thought there was supposed to be some text about how the T10 vendor ID=20
is used. More specifically, is the T10 Vendor ID supposed to be part of=20
the reference value used to get the key or not.=20
