Kevin,

Your proposal doesn't provide a method to return "total power on hours".
You mention a default time of "time since last power on" but this is
entirely different and won't be the same as total power on hours.

If a total power on hours timer is not addressed in 04-271, then the most
reasonable way to include it is to add a total power on hours parameter to
log page 0Eh. This already contains a "total number of spinups" value, so a
total power on hours value would be consistent with the purpose of the log
page.

Doug,

Please look at my proposal 04-271 which proposes a Time of Day setting
which defaults to a power-on time when the time of day timestamp has not
been set. This will be the first discussion of this proposal in CAP next
week. I hope to get it approved then, but I have been told my expectations
may be high. If you have suggestions for changes please let me know.

Thanks,

The self-test result log page (SPC-3) has a timestamp
field which is the total accumulated power on hours at
the time when the self-test was done. So recent disks
which typically support this log page need to keep track
of the accumulated power on time.

However there is no standard log page (as at SPC-3 rev 20a)
that makes this value available. One could use the SEND
DIAGNOSTIC command to do a background short self-test and read
the result 2 minutes later. That approach seems a bit obtuse.

Both Seagate and Hitachi have a vendor specific "factory" log
page (3Eh) that makes the power on time value available.

Could space be found in an existing standard log page (or
a new one) for the power on time?
