Hi Tape folks,

I am forwarding an email thread about ELS Read Sequence Status (RSS)
and Sequence Status Block (SSB).

To make a long story short, there is an error in the SSB which is
returned in the RSS LS_ACC. Since FC-TAPE states that RSS is A(llowed),
there was a concern raised on whether or not any tape vendor supports
RSS.

Hello, Lawrence, I'm afraid I don't have the knowledge to give you a
meaningful answer. (Implicitly, I guess that means I don't know any
8-)

If it's important, you might want to try sending the question to the =

Sorry.

Hi Jim and Bob,

I just checked FC-TAPE profile for RSS ELS. FC-TAPE states that RSS is
A(llowed).
Do you know any tape vendors that are supporting RSS?

By the way, I do not plan on pursuing this any further.

It is my belief that the issue is resolved by its long history: the
change at issue was approved in 1999. No proposals to change this have
been brought forward, though Larry may decide to pursue that path. My
proposal 04-611v0, submitted for discussion at the next FC-LS meeting,
clarifies the status quo.

Thanks!

Hi, Larry,
Indeed, that change was definitely prior to FC-FS-2 being initiated! It
was
made between FC-FS version 0.00 (March 4, 1999) and version 0.10 (July
28,
1999), and has remained the same since then. Because this change has
been
so long established, I would hesitate to further modify the standard,
despite the good reasons you give that it should have been done
differently.

However, I note that the SSB is described as a "logical construct" and
that
only the first eight bytes of the SSB appear anywhere in a standard
interface. Unless that changes, an implementation is actually not
constrained by the standard as to how it internally maintains the
trailing
half of the SSB.

Hope that helps!
