Katata-san,

Your ExampleTime.doc file suggests that there are two possible time unit
reporting types, which you gave friendly names of "stair" type and "clock" type.

(A) I think the stair type implementation is less useful to a host.  This is
especially true if the OPC and spinup time are very close to the remaining
operation times.  To understand one case, please accept the following times:

Spinup - 15 seconds
OPC - 12 seconds
Operation Time - 30 seconds

Consider if event is reported just before OPC is finished, it would then report
42 seconds, even though the "real" remaining time is actually 31 seconds.  If
the host waits twenty seconds before requesting the next event, the time
reported will have dropped to 11 seconds (instead of the expected 22).  While
this will not cause software problems in a reasonably-designed host, the
resulting user view of the time remaining will be less ideal.  Therefore, I must
wonder if there is a device-level reason to not implement the clock type
implementation?

(B) Your document shows a spike for seeek time in describing the stair type
implementation, but not in the clock type implementation.  Was this spike also
allowable by the clock type implementation?

I think even with the clock type implementation, the reported time may spike due
to seek operations or other causes.  So, the host cannot always expect that the
reported time will decrease, as the time may increase due to unexpected events
(retried OPC, other drive retries).  So, perhaps the clock type implementation
may be understood to be what the drive understands the estimated remaining time
to be at a given instant in time, but this time may be modified by the drive as
conditions require?

One example may be that, during long writing operation (such as formatting),
drive determines the need to slow its speed to ensure that it can properly write
to the media.  In this case, the remaining time may actually increase due to the
reduction in write speed.  Obviously, such events should not be considered
typical behavior (if allowed at all).  Can you clarify if increasing the time is
allowed in such cases?
