I have reviewed the project proposal for AVD
AV Direct-access commands (AVD). It is my
opinion that this project proposal must be
discussed in the CAP meeting prior to the
plenary.

The project proposal indicates that third-
party commands will be developed but shows
no cognizance of critical relationships
between third-party commands, and aliases,
ACLs, and reservations.

The project proposal suggests inclusion
of a file system in the proposed standard
but says nothing about how that file
system relates to OSD.

The farthest the proposal is willing to
go in considering existing SCSI command
set standards is, "The AVD draft standard is
*intended* to be harmonized with existing
SCSI command sets." The AVD draft standard
needs to go a great deal farther than
intent to harmonize with existing SCSI
command sets. Harmonization needs to be
undertaken at every step in the development
process.

The AVD proposal does not even mention SPC-3
as a standard requiring coordination with the
AVD "commands which may be incorporated by
reference into other SCSI command sets."
Neither does the project proposal envision
any need to have a relationship with SAM-2.

The CAP working group needs to give serious
consideration to whether the AVD command
set can be successfully developed in a
working group other than CAP.

Thanks for your consideration.

Ralph...
