Can any ATAPI 'packet' command tell the host whether drive is actually ATAPI vs. SCSI ?

Thank you for replying (in both T10 and T13).

I am concerned with ATAPI tape drives.

Since ATAPI tape drivers mostly want to follow the QIC-157 standard,
I have been unconcerned and unaware of commands in MMC2.

I will get a copy of the MMC material. It sounds like something worthwhile.

Thank you,

Hello Jim, (meet again)

I must ask you again "what kind of device do you want to control?" In the
case of MMC2 (mmc2r11a.pdf), there is "GET CONFIGURATION Command". In "
Feature 0001h: Core", there is "Physical Interface Standard field" in "Core
Feature Descriptor". There is a list of "Physical Interface Standard". If
you want to control DVD recordable devices, they will support this command
and field.

If you want to control old devices, "VERSION" field of Inquiry data is a
method. Other method may be OS/Driver dependent.

In working with ASPI device drivers, all devices are treated as SCSI
devices.

Does anyone know whether there is any way for a device to indicate
to the host that it is <actually> SCSI vs. ATAPI ?

The INQUIRY command might be a logical means, but there does not seem
to be any indication in its specification.
