Brian,

The 'valid information' that may be in the pad bytes depends on what the
target puts there. An example of where this could occur is if the
allocation length in a Request Sense command was set to a length that
requires pad bytes and it not long enough to transfer all the sense data
the target has. The  target may then place sense data bytes that are after
the last byte sent (determined by the allocation length) in the pad
byte(s).

SPI-3 rev 2 section 12.3, explaining the fields of the L_Q
Information unit, contains the following text:

> A valid byte(s) bit (VBYTE) of zero indicates the pad byte(s) of the next
information unit contain pad byte(s)
> of 00h. A VBYTE of one indicates the pad byte(s) of the next information
unit contain valid information.

What is the "valid information" that the pad bytes contain?
