LUN DISCOVERY PROBLEM/SOLUTION

Recent increases in the maximum number of LUNs within any target has
made the process of determining the number LUNs in a target by checking for
each one impractical. (For example, if the maximum number of LUNs is 32,
it is practical for an initiator to send an INQUIRY command to each one to
determine it's existence.) Now that 64000 LUNS may exist, this process is
impractical.

The SCC (RAID) command set has solved this problem by providing a "Report
Peripheral Device" command. This command, which may always be sent to LUN
0, returns a list of the existing LUNs.

Can this command, now unique to SCC, be included in SPC? This would solve
the LUN discovery process consistently among all device types and thereby
eliminating the need for unique LUN discovery code for each device type.

Thank you.
