Meeting Schedule 10. Adjournment Results of Meeting 1. Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer the Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 12, 1993. He thanked Jim Smith of Tandem Computers for hosting the meeting. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the attendance list was circulated for attendance and corrections. It was stated that the meeting had been authorized by X3T9.2 and would be conducted under the X3 rules. Ad hoc meetings take no final actions, but prepare recommendations for approval by the X3T9.2 task group. The voting rules for the meeting are those of the parent committee, X3T9.2. These rules are: one vote per company; and any participating company member may vote. The minutes of this meeting will be posted to the SCSI BBS and the SCSI Reflector and will be included in the next committee mailing. 2. Attendance and Membership Attendance at working group meetings does not count toward minimum attendance requirements for X3T9.2 membership. Working group meetings are open to any person or company to attend and to express their opinion on the subjects being discussed. Approval of Agenda The proposed agenda was approved. 4. SCSI-3 Command Sets (SPC, SBC, SSC, SGC, and SMC) 4.1 Synchronization Status and Errors (92-130 R2) [DeKoning] No discussion. On plenary agenda for February. 4.2 SCSI-3 Primary Commands (92-225r0,226r0) [Weber] Ralph Weber reviewed the proposed outline for the SPC document (92-225). Someone had suggested to Ralph that the ASC/ASCQ list NOT be included in the SPC document. There was extensive discussion over how to maintain and disseminate the ASC/ASCQ list. The conclusion was that Ralph would maintain the list as a database and include the current list into SPC document at each revision. Even after publication of the SPC document, the committee will maintain the ASC/ASCQ list as a committee document. The SPC document will include a statement advising the reader that the current ASC/ASCQ list can be obtained from the committee. The working group recommended that the COPY, COMPARE, and COPY AND VERIFY commands be dropped from the SCSI-3 documents. The opcodes should be marked as "reserved for compatibility with SCSI-2". The mode pages will be examined to isolate the transport-specific information. The old mode pages will be retained for SCSI-2 compatibility and new mode pages will be generated that are transport-independent. 4.3 Disconnect Control on Initial Connection (92-133r6) [Smyers] Scott presented rev 6 of his proposal. A number of minor changes were made and Scott agreed to prepare rev 7 for the plenary meeting. He also agreed to distribute rev 7 to the SCSI Reflector. 4.4 Printer Command Set [Heckman] Ray Heckman was not present and no document was available for review. 4.5 TTD and CONTINUE I/O PROCESS revisited [Houlder] Gerry Houlder presented 93-012 which identifies an ambiguous situation that can occur when using the TTD and CONTINUE I/O PROCESS messages. He identified three possible resolutions and recommended that solution B) be accepted and documented. There was extensive discussion over the alternatives. There was consensus that Gerry's alternative A) is the correct behavior. If the initiator sends CIOP before the target is ready for data transfer, the target shall ignore the early CIOP. The initiator can accomplish the same thing that alternative B) would accomplish by sending a MESSAGE REJECT message in response to the target's attempt to disconnect when the target is ready to transfer data. Gerry Houlder accepted an action item to prepare a document to clarify the SIP document. 4.6 MODE SELECT Block Descriptors [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer said that he had an internal request to examine the possibility of adding a block descriptor mode page to SCSI-3 or defining some method to tell the target to save the block descriptor information. In particular, the requestor wanted to save the Number of Blocks information so that the disk capacity can be forced to be consistent (and slightly smaller than the maximum capacity). John noted that Block Descriptors were inherited from SCSI-1 and did not follow the SCSI-2 mode page architecture, which provides a mechanism for saving page information. He suggested that the only way to migrate to a consistent architecture is to define both structures in SCSI-3 and allow the old structure to gradually die. The impact of adding a new mode page for this purpose was not well received. It was suggested that adding a new Save Block Descriptors bit might be a better approach; however, George Penokie reminded the group of an objection he received to his CHANGE INQUIRY proposal that there would need to be some method of returning to the manufacturer's default values. No action was taken. 4.7 Sequential Access Density Codes for QIC (93-13) [Entzel] Paul Entzel had sent John Lohmeyer a fax requesting on behalf of QIC that two SCSI-3 SSC density codes be assigned for recording 4 and 5 Gigabytes on DC600- style data cartridges. The working group agreed that the SSC editor, Gary Stephens, should assign code values for this purpose. Gary agreed to inform Paul Entzel of the code values assigned. 4.8 Opcode Assignment for Dual Port Status Command [Houlder] Gerry Houlder pointed out that 91-149 R0 had been accepted for SCSI-3 but was not on Ralph's list of activities for SPC. In particular, Gerry wanted an opcode assigned to the Dual Port Status command. 91-149 was also not in George Penokie's list of documents approved for SCSI-3 (92-184). Ralph agreed to research what happened to 91-149. 4.9 SCSI Caching Mode Page Vendor-Specific Caching Mode [Milligan] Gene suggested that several vendor-specific caching modes be defined in the caching mode page. This would provide a standard way of switching caching modes. George Penokie suggested that the entire field be called vendor- specific. Gene will prepare a proposal. 5. SCSI-3 Architecture Model (SAM) Charles Monia, the SAM editor, lead a discussion about which task management functions should appear in SAM. The transport protocol documents will support all of the generic task management functions via transport-specific task management functions. Charles said he expects to have a complete version of SAM for the February meeting. 5.1 Queue Full Handling (92-214r0) [DeKoning] Rod presented his document proposing mechanisms for dealing with sharing the command queue among multiple initiators. The present queuing mechanisms are rather ugly when the queue is full since the initiator has no reliable indication of when the queue is no longer full. Rod's proposal includes two facets: 1) add a MINIMUM QUEUE DEPTH REQUEST message and 2) add a Near Queue Full (NQF) bit to the status byte. This proposal triggered considerable discussion, but did not converge on a solution. It may not be possible to insure that queue full conditions do not occur without significantly under-using the queue resources. Another area that should be addressed is queue full handling for transport protocols other than SIP. The optimal solution would be transport protocol independent. 6. Serial Protocol Topics 6.1 SCSI-3 Serial Bus Protocol (SBP) Jerry Marazas reported on the latest revision of SBP (rev 6) resulting from the SBP editing session on January 6-7, 1993. See 93-14 for details. The next SBP editing session is January 27-28, 1993 (Wed. & Thur.) hosted by Scott Smyers (408-974-7057) at Apple Computer in Santa Clara, California. Jerry also requested that another SBP working group meeting be scheduled for Thursday February 18, 1993 in Austin, TX (during the X3T9 plenary week). Jerry also suggested that an SBP meeting be scheduled for March 1-2, 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida hosted by Jerry Marazas. 6.2 SCSI-3 Fiber Channel Protocol (FCP) Bob Snively had nothing new to report. 6.3 SCSI-3 Generic Packetized Protocol (GPP) Gary Stephens briefly reported on the GPP editing session that was held on Monday. A revised document will be included in the next mailing. 7. General WG Topics 7.1 Conformance Testing (92-231) [Stephens] Gary Stephens had distributed a "SCSI-2 Options Selection Document" (92-231) at the December meeting. It identifies the SCSI-2 options. Gary said that the document was not intended to develop a conformance clause at this late date, but rather to aid in developing the SCSI-3 documents. 7.2 Report on CAM-2 Study Group Meeting [Dallas] The CAM-2 study group agreed that some changes to CAM-1 should be made as a result of Randell Jesup's public review comment. Most of the changes are in the area of target-mode operation. CAM-1 and CAM-2 SIMs should be able to co-exist. The XPT may route a CAM-1 or CAM-2 CCB to either SIM. The SIM will either accept or reject the CCB based on the SIM's capabilities. A CAM-2 Study Group Meeting was scheduled for Tuesday evening of the April plenary meeting week. 7.3 Foreword on Use of SCSI-3 Moniker [Ham] Bill Ham presented foils showing proposed wording for a SPI foreword to identify some the significant enhancements in SPI. There were a number of objections from people who were concerned about implications that devices which use A cable connectors and otherwise comply with SPI are enhanced SCSI-2 devices and not SCSI-3 devices. Most of the objections were more marketing concerns than specific problems with SPI. It became apparent that the less said the better. 8. SPI Topics 8.1 Review of SPI Revision 10 Larry Lamers was not present so John marked-up his copy of SPI per comments received to give to Larry for incorporation into the next revision of SPI. 10.2: Attention Event should not say what is meant by the Attention Condition. SIP/GPP should define the meaning and target reaction. Last paragraph may need work. Signal stuff needs to stay, but should we talk about MESSAGE OUT phase? Gary thinks it should be moved up to SIP and George thinks Gary is wrong. In response to Gene Milligan's question about why some connector dimensions are within boxes, Bob Whiteman conducted a elementary mechanical drafting 101 course for Electrical Engineers. 8.2 Power Connector Pin & Cavity [Dambach, Allan] Gene Milligan reported that the Small Form Factor group had discussed this issue on Monday and they will construct a matrix of power connector dimensions by manufacturer to determine the magnitude of the problem. 8.3 Hot Plug Leakage Current Specification (92-219r1) [Asami] This document had been accepted at the last plenary meeting with a minor change. Robbie Shergill noted that SPI Rev 10 had not deleted the negative current as agreed to in December. 8.4 Test Procedure - Maximum Signal Capacitance (92-236r0) [Spence] Ting Chan advocated that the measurement be conducted with a bias voltage of 0,50 vdc. There was no objection to this change. Paul Nitza argued that the peak-to-peak amplitude should be nominally 0,4 volts, not a maximum of 0,4 volts to avoid disputes over the actually capacitance value. No other changes were suggested, so the working group recommends that these two changes be included in SPI. 8.5 Clarification of Synchronous Handshake (92-235r0) [Lamers] John said this item was on the agenda mostly to highlight the change made in December to those people who were not present for the December meeting. The synchronous handshaking was clarified to avoid a problem identified by Toshiba in 92-212. See 92-235 for the clarified wording. 9. Meeting Schedule The next meeting of the General Working Group will be March 16-17, 1993 at the Hyatt Newporter (714-729-1234) in Newport Beach, California hosted by Emulex. The room rates are $100.00 including tax. The reservation deadline for these rates is January 31, 1993. A CAM-2 Study Group Meeting was scheduled for Tuesday evening of the April plenary meeting week. 10. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday January 13, 1993.
