Review of Action Items 12. Meeting Schedule 12.1 Working Group Schedule 13. Adjournment Results of Meeting 1. Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday February 17, 1992. He thanked Carl Zeitler of IBM Corporation for hosting the meeting. John mentioned that Horst Truestedt arranged a meeting discount number with Northwest Airlines on a trial basis. John announced that ESDI had finally been published the last week of December as both X3.170-1990 and X3.170a-1991 in one document. The "a" designation means an addendum (to bless the infamous Table 28 deletion), but no version of the standard without the addendum was ever published. John also announced that SCSI-2 Revision 10h will enter a four-month public review period from March 6, 1992 until July 6, 1992. ANSI has insisted that the review period be four-months because they view this effort as revising the approved, but unpublished 1990 SCSI-2 standard (Rev 10c). John said that the X3 Secretariat prefers receiving membership changes on the "X3 Subgroup Membership Forms" which were available on the document table. He said that people should use the X3 forms to insure the X3 Secretariat has the latest membership information. The forms should be mailed to the X3 Secretariat with a copy to John Lohmeyer. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the attendance list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the following additions: 8.12 ATA Extensions 10.6 Microsoft CAM Issue (92-39) [Allan] 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two out of three consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the Chair of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. No organizations had joined or left the committee since the last meeting. Connector Industry Consulting Group joined at this meeting with Michael Lazar as the principal member. With the addition of one organization at the meeting and no terminations for nonattendance (see 3.1), the X3T9.2 voting membership is now at 58 organizations up from 57 at the last meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of the people present at the meeting and enclosure (2) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The Chair said he had sent jeopardy letters to letters to 17 people from 6 organizations: Adaptec, Burndy, JAE, NEK/Helix Cable, Panasonic, and Sun Microsystems. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended this meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. Members were present from each of the organizations so there were no terminations. 4. Approval of Minutes - December Meeting San Diego, CA (X3T9.2/91-216) The minutes were approved as written. 5. Document Distribution John Lohmeyer said that the committee mailing had gone out just after the last set of working group meetings and that the X3 Secretariat had processed it expeditiously so that the members would receive it more than two weeks prior to the meeting. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina Gray at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by noon on Monday March 23, 1992. He expects to include documents received at the March working group meetings in the mailing. As usual, minutes are also available on the SCSI BBS (316-636-8700) and will be distributed to the SCSI Reflector E-mail list. To be added to the SCSI Reflector, send an electronic message to: scsiadm@WichitaKS.NCR.COM. Liaison Reports and Call for Patents 6.1 ISO [Milligan] Gene Milligan, the X3T9 International Representative, gave an oral report and later provided an electronic report to X3T9: ISO Report 2/92 New work item (NWI) proposals have been submitted to the X3 Secretariat for: NWI - High-Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI) Framing Protocol (FP) NWI - High-Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI) Encapsulation of ISO 8802-2 Logical Link Control Protocol Data Units (LE) NWI - High-Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI) Physical Switch Control (SC) NWI - High-Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI) Memory Interface (MI) NWI - Fibre Channel (FC) Physical and Signaling Interface (PH) A letter was sent to the X3 Secretariat urging action on the request to provide ESDI X3.170A-1991 to the ITTF for publication as IS 10 222. The ITTF has provided a vote summary in SC 25 N63 for IS 6951:1986 Information processing -- Processor system bus interface (Eurobus A) reaffirmation letter ballot. The results were 13:1:2:10:1:2:13:0:1:2. The negative votes were both from Germany. They recommend that the standard is obsolete and are in favor of its withdrawal. The ITTF also provided a vote summary in SC 25 N63 for ISO/IEC 11518-1 Information processing -- High Performance Parallel Interface, Part 1: Mechanical, Electrical, and Signaling Protocol Specification (HIPPI-PH) letter ballot. The results were 10:1:1:4. The negative ballot and comments were from Germany and had previously been communicated. In addition the ITTF also provided a vote summary in SC 25 N67 for ISO/IEC 9314-4 Information processing -- FDDI Single Mode Fibre Physical Layer Medium Dependent (SMF-PMD) letter ballot. The results were 10:1:0:5. The negative ballot and comments were from Germany and had previously been communicated. The U.S. ballot had administrative comments. The forty eight detailed comments from Germany are all editorial items for the project editor. The letter ballot on ISO/IEC CD 11801 Planning and Installation Guide for Customer Premises Cabling to Support Attachment of ISO 8802-5 Token Ring Stations closed 12/20/91. The results have not yet been distributed. The notice for the SC 25 Milan meeting has been distributed as SC 25 N70. Registration is required by 3/20/92. The WG 4 meeting presumably is Monday 6/8 through Thursday 6/11. The SC 25 plenary is Friday 6/12/92. The detailed agendas have not yet been distributed. 6.2 IT8 [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer had nothing new to report. 6.3 Fibre Channel [Allan] Dal Allan reported. All outstanding issues on comments on FC-PH have been responded to. A meeting vote is planned for the X3T9.3 plenary on Tuesday to forward the document to X3T9 for another letter ballot. 6.4 Small Form Factor Industry Group [Allan] Dal Allan reported. The number of connector choices has been reduced but there are still three. The 68-pin PCMCIA connector has the most support, with two choices (50-pin 2mm and 68-pin high density) for vertical insertion of drives. A decision on which 68-pin high-density connector has yet to be made between the AMP and Burndy proposals. Apple Computer has suggested that a power cabling issue on P1394 be addressed at the next SFF meeting. 6.5 IEEE P1394 [Smyers] Scott Smyers reported. The IEEE committee developing P1394 is aiming to finalize it by late summer. Scott had a proposal for implementation requirements (see 92-033). This will be a topic for the March working group meeting. It was recommended that this document be included in an appendix to the proposed Serial Bus Protocol standard. The question on availability of copies of the P1394 draft document arose again. Copies can be obtained by calling 202-371-0101. The estimate charge is $10. Electronic copies are available through FTP by accessing the machine APPLE.COM, user - ANONYMOUS, password - YOUR NAME, change directory (cd) to pub/standards/p1394. The electronic file is in compressed postscript format. 6.6 Call for Patents This is a regular agenda item to identify any potential patent issues with developing standards. Patents that may be related to various X3T9.2 projects are a PrairieTek patent on power management, a Maxtor patent on spindle synchronization, and a AMD patent application on a glitch tolerance circuit. Dal mentioned that there may be a Western Digital patent pending on drives which automatically adapt to AT bus backplane speeds. This patent might be applicable to ATA devices. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. Larry Lamers will draft a response to Mr. Mori's comments (91-170) on SCSI-2. Complete. 2. Scott Smyers will investigate making the P1212, P1212.1, and P1394 documents available electronically on the SCSI BBS. He will also investigate providing these documents through Global Engineering Documents. Carry over. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 AT Attachment Status (ATA) John Lohmeyer reported. The public review period for ATA is March 6 through July 6, 1992. There is a need for a volunteer to be the ISO project editor. 8.2 Directly-Addressable Device Interface (DADI) This project depends on the resolution of the IEEE/X3T9 issues regarding standards development division of responsibility for memory-model devices. The chairman requested Larry Lamers to contact Don Loughery about the documentation on the IEEE/X3T9 meeting with the objective to include it in the March committee mailing. 8.3 SCSI Common Access Method (CAM) John Lohmeyer reported. The CAM people met separately at the last working group meeting. The issues were not fully resolved, so there will not be a forwarding motion until the April plenary meeting. The remaining issues are from Extended Systems. John asked Dal Allan, the CAM editor, to contact the Extended Systems people to encourage their participation at the March working group meeting. 8.4 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/92-5) John Lohmeyer reported. The IBM Serial Storage Architecture was presented to the working group. The documents were included in the January mailing. The working group made a recommendation on SCSI-2 Fast Timings based on a question from Jeff Stai on the application of fast data timings to other than data phases. The conclusion was that the document is ambiguous, but the intent was that fast timings only apply to data phases when in fast data transfer mode. 8.5 SCSI-2 Status John Lohmeyer reported. The document will begin public review March 6, 1992 for a four month period. A copy has been sent to the ANSI Publications Department for pre-edit. 8.6 SCSI-3 Parallel Interface (SPI) Status (X3T9.2/92-20) Kurt Chan is preparing a revised document. Bill Spence reported that copies will be available for review at the SPI meeting on Tuesday. 8.7 SCSI-3 Interlocked Protocol (SIP) Status Kurt Chan reported that no further work has been done. He is still waiting for clarification on dual porting. 8.8 SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol (SPP) Status (X3T9.2/92-21) John Lohmeyer reported on a 2-day meeting held in January at Apple Computer to discuss SPP. The result of this meeting was a proliferation of documents to address the interlayer communications issues. Serial Bus Protocol (SBP) maps to P1394. Generic Packetized Protocol (GPP) maps to anything. FC-4S maps to Fibre Channel. SCSI Interlocked Protocol (SIP) maps to parallel SCSI (SPI). These four documents form the transport protocol "layer". Above this layer is the SCSI Architecture Model (SAM). Above SAM is the SCSI Common Command (SCC) set. In addition to SCC, there are the SCSI Block Command (SBC) set and the SCSI Stream Command (SSC). Other command sets may also be defined. This partitioning of the SCSI-3 project will require the preparation of several more project proposals. The division has actually helped the editor issue even though there are more documents. John said he had tentative volunteers for editor of each document. Coordination of some many documents and editors may be a challenge. Editor Meetings are planned for Thursday of each Working Group Week. 8.9 SCSI-3 Command Set (SCS) Status See 8.8. 8.10 SCSI-3 Queuing Working Group (X3T9.2/92-19) George Penokie reported. There had been an architecture meeting and two working group meetings since the last plenary. A new proposal was developed that does not use several of the terms that have been causing difficulty. The queuing model definition is based on observable I/O process activity. Consensus on this approach will be sought at the working group meeting Monday evening. 8.11 SCSI-3 Connector Contacts (92-22) [Penokie] George Penokie reported that a document will be distributed at the next SPI working group meeting on SCSI-3 alternative 1 connector requirements. This document (92-035) lists recommended changes to SPI. This document is the outcome of the consensus reached at the contact working group meeting and will be discussed at the connector contact working group meeting March 16. 8.12 ATA Extensions The status of the ATA Extensions project was brought up by Jim McGrath. John Lohmeyer did not know the results of the January SPARC meeting where the project proposal was to be considered. [Chairman's Note: On Tuesday, Del Shoemaker reported that there was one "no" vote from IBM and the project proposal is now at X3 for letter ballot.] Jim McGrath questioned how the committee was going to do business on this project since work was under way but no draft document existed. So far there has been no volunteer to be the project editor. 9. Old Business 9.1 SCSI Identifier Symbols (92-007) [Novak] Vit Novak distributed copies of 92-007 revision 1 that included the working group recommendations. Vit Novak moved and Dal Allan seconded that 92-007R1 be accepted for SCSI-3 Parallel Interface as an informative annex. The motion passed 34:0:0. An action item was given to the SPI editor to incorporate 92-007R1 in the document. 9.2 SCSI Data Phase LRC (91-176R1) [Penokie] George Penokie stated he had no further information on the LRC proposal but requested that this agenda item be retained for one more meeting cycle. 9.3 Resolution of SCSI CAM Issues (91-140,-162,-169,-210,-211) [Smyers, Burr, Youngwerth] See 8.3. 10. New Business 10.1 Review of new documents DMA Meeting at HP-PCG (92-034) [McGrath] Jim McGrath reported. A working group has coalesced to address the issue of fast ATA data transfers. The purpose is to specify the timings needed to promote interoperability. A meeting was scheduled for February 28, 1992 at Quantum in Milpitas, CA. FC-4S (91-122R1.1) [Ramsay] Committee members are requested to read this document so that a serious discussion can be held at the March working group on Wednesday. 10.2 Agenda for the March SCSI General Working Group The following draft agenda was generated for the March General SCSI Working Group meeting in San Diego, CA: 1. Revised SCSI-3 project proposals 2. Serial Bus Protocol (P1394) [Smyers] 3. FC-4S Protocol [Snively] 4. Generic Packetized Protocol [Stephens] 5. SCSI-3 Architecture Model [Monia] 6. ATA Extensions - DMA Timing [McGrath] 7. CAM comments resolution [Smyers, Youngwerth] 8. Enhancement of Sequential Access for Medium Changers (92-6) [Jones] 9. Alternate P Cable Connector for SCSI-3 {Monday 5 p.m.} 10.3 Fast SCSI-3 Timing (92-032) [Chan] This issue affects timing parameters on protocol chips. The document states that timings are measured at the device connector. Some specifications are unreasonable if measured there, and need to be measured at the protocol chip. This issue is especially important for off-chip drivers and receivers as is done with differential devices. Who gets the margin is the real question. Kurt proposes getting rid of the circular deskew definitions. He also wants to simplify the skew budget in the appendix. There is a need to develop a meaningful external driver specification. The issue was assigned tot he SPI working group. 10.4 Enhancement of Sequential Access for Medium Changers (92-6) [Jones] Kevin Jones was not present. The issue was assigned to the March working group. The vice-chairman asked Kurt Chan to request that an appropriate HP representative be present to support the proposal. 10.5 Alternate P Cable Connector for SCSI-3 (92-31) [Smyers, Marazas] Scott Smyers presented a joint IBM-Apple proposal to start a working group to examine alternate high-density connectors. It was contended that there is an availability issue of getting all versions of the current high-density connectors and an issue with potential damage to pins in the connector. Suppliers of the current high-density connector disputed these contentions. The expected life of the working group was to be 6-months, with the stated purpose of selecting a ribbon-contact style connector. Jim McGrath moved and Bill Spence seconded that at the April '92 plenary meeting the committee shall, after hearing recommendations from the general working group, vote between the following four proposals: 1) no ribbon 68-pin connector 2) adding a Burndy style ribbon connector 3) adding a 3M style ribbon connector 4) adding both a Burndy and a 3M style ribbon connector Voting shall be by successive elimination (option with the lowest vote total is eliminated from the next round of voting). The committee also requests that system integrators make individual recommendations to the committee prior to this vote. Gene Milligan moved to call the question. The motion failed 14:10. (Calling the question requires a 2/3rd majority in favor.) George Penokie moved and Scott Smyers seconded that the motion be amended to be that the committee spend 4 to 6 months time to technically analyze the connectors to determine a set of system integrator's recommendations for an alternative P connector. The amendment passed 21:12 Gene Milligan moved to call the question. The motion failed 12:11. A friendly amendment was accepted to add the word "shielded". Dal Allan moved and Kurt Chan seconded that the motion be amended to delete the word "shielded". The amendment passed 14:8. Dal Allan offered a friendly amendment to charter the general working group to study the question of an alternative connector for a vote of resolution at the June plenary meeting. The amendment was accepted. The final amended motion was that the committee spend four months to technically analyze the connectors to determine a set of system integrator's recommendations for an alternative P connector for a vote at the June plenary meeting. The motion passed 25:7. 10.6 Microsoft CAM Issue (92-39) [Allan] Dal Allan stated that he had received a letter from Microsoft asking for changes in CAM to make it clear that Microsoft does not necessarily support CAM. 11. Review of Action Items 1. Kurt Chan will include 92-007R1 in SPI as an informative annex. 2. Scott Smyers will investigate making the P1212, P1212.1, and P1394 documents available electronically on the SCSI BBS in ASCII format. 3. Scott Smyers to investigate providing P1394 through Global Engineering Documents. 12.
