SPP Meeting January 15, 1992 Houston, Texas X3T9.2/92-21 Date: January 17, 1992 To: X3T9.2 From: John Lohmeyer Subject: SPP Meeting January 15, 1992 ______________________________________________________________________________ No specific agenda had been established for this meeting. Another SPP architectural meeting had already been arranged for later in January with the editors and the people who had been most vocal about SPP architecture. It was hoped that the working group could make some headway on a document structure so that the late January meeting could be more constructive. Kurt Chan had drawn a foil with a suggested roadmap for the packetized documentation. Dal whipped out a marker and came up with an alternative idea that no one found particularly repugnant. Amazing. This group had never agreed previously. The basic idea was to move the common packetized layer up into the Command Set layer. This would establish an interface much like the CAM CCB. Then any number of mapping documents could be established to map these CAM-like CCBs to the specific hardware interface (much like SIM does in CAM). Dal's diagram (rearranged slightly) was as follows: +--------------------------+ | SCSI-3 Command Sets | |- - - - - - - - - - - - - | | CAM-like layer | +--------------------------+ | +----------+-------+--+---------+---------+ | | | | | +-----+ +---------+ +-----+ +-------+ +-----+ | SIP | | Generic | | FC4 | | P1394 | | SSA | | SIM | | SIM | | SIM | | SIM | | SIM | <-- Actually SIM-like +-----+ +---------+ +-----+ +-------+ +-----+ | | | | | +-----+ +---------+ +-----+ +-------+ +-----+ | SPI | | Other | | FC? | | P1394 | | SSA | +-----+ +---------+ +-----+ +-------+ +-----+ The group kick this idea around and couldn't find any obvious flaws. Of course, we will have to go back to SPARC for several more project proposals if we make the SIMs separate documents, but the benefit of having separate documents may outweigh the extra work. The group was so pleased with their achievement that they didn't want to jinx it by digging too much further. The meeting was adjourned early at 3:00 p.m. The next SPP working group meeting will be held at Apple Computer on January 27-29, 1992. This is intended to be a fairly small meeting to establish the document(s) structure. If you wish to participate, please contact Scott Smyers at (408) 974-7057.
