Date: January 13, 1992 To: X3T9.2 Membership From: Lawrence J. Lamers, Secretary Subject: January 13, 1992 DADI Working Group Meeting Minutes Dal Allan called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. January 13, 1991. He thanked Patrick Savage of Shell Corporation for hosting the meeting. This meeting was billed as a DADI working group. However that activity has not yet started. This meeting dealt with the ATA extensions and the drive on a card (PCMCIA) issues. The final agenda was as follows: 1. Host Interface Implementation Guide (92-010) [Hanan] 2. ATA DMA EISA Issue (McGrath) [92-011] 3. Meeting Schedule 4. Host Interface Implementation Guide (92-010) [Hanan] Tom Hanan presented a host interface implementation guide for PCMCIA- IDE. This is the barebones document that finally passed the legal review at Western Digital. There are a number of issues that need to be addressed when using the ATA interface on a PCMCIA I/O bus. The CE1 signal is used to qualify the decoding of the 1F0h-3F7h address space. Thus any bus signal is qualified by CE1. The RESET and INTREQ signals are not qualified. There are so many legal and patent issues surrounding all the discussions that it is difficult to make headway. This is a similar situation that we faced in developing the ATA interface. Getting a draft document is the only way to get the ball rolling. Now that Tom's input is available as a basis if was felt that the drafting effort could get underway, and this would flush all the gremlins out of wall. A focus group will meet to work on a draft document. Tom Newman volunteered to spear head this effort. This focus group plans to meet next week during the PCMCIA meeting to get started. 2. ATA DMA EISA Issue (McGrath) [92-011] Jim McGrath discussed an issue related to DMA transfer performance and the ATA document. He had received comments from a customer that the throughput is not nearly as good as expected due to the ISA bus DMA timings. The EISA DMA specification is much better, and there is a desire to use those timing values in ATA. Tom Hanan suggested that by using the timings in ATA and holding DMARQ asserted 4 MBs is achievable. There are some detailed 5ns timing issues that need to be addressed. To achieve 6 MBs some modification to the ATA document would be needed. Jim stated that Te needs to be 1.5 clocks, setup and hold times need to be specific for high speed ISA systems. Jim raised a problem with the 5ns hold time for data from a systems side. Tom stated that the capacitance of the system held up the data signals a lot longer. However, it is not guaranteed. Jim McGrath will organize a technical discussion on this subject to get together timing charts for the ATA extensions. 3. Meeting Schedule The second ATA Extensions / Drive on a Card Working Group meeting for January is on Monday, January 20, 1992 at the Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, AZ. An ATA Extensions / Drive on a Card Working Group meeting for March is on March 16, 1992 at 2:00 pm at the Humphries Half Moon Inn in San Diego, CA. 4. Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 4:30 pm.
