Review of Action Items 12. Meeting Schedule 12.1 Working Group Schedule 13. Adjournment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday December 9, 1991. He thanked Rich Bailey of Vitro Corporation for hosting the meeting at a beautiful location. John said that the X3 Secretariat prefers receiving membership changes on the "X3 Subgroup Membership Forms" which were available on the document table. He said that while he will continue to accept change information for the attendance database on the forms at the end of the attendance list, people should use the X3 forms to insure the X3 Secretariat has the latest membership information. The forms should be mailed to the X3 Secretariat with a copy to John Lohmeyer. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the attendance list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the following addition: 9.7 Committee Publicity 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two out of three consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the Chair of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The Chair indicated that since the last meeting he had terminated the IGM Data Autoloader membership because their only member had left the company; the Interphase principal and alternate members had been replaced with David Lawson and David Buyze; and Shishir Shah had replaced Doug Pickford as the Western Digital alternate member. Extended Systems joined the committee at the meeting with Al Youngwerth the principal member and Bob Huntsman the alternate. Foxconn International joined the committee at the meeting with Stan Sharp the principal. With the IGM Data Autoloader termination and the Tandem Computer termination for nonattendance (see 3.1), the X3T9.2 voting membership remains at 57 organizations. Enclosure (1) is the list of the people present at the meeting and enclosure (2) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The Chair said he had sent jeopardy letters to letters to 17 people from 7 organizations: Archive Corp., Data General Corp., Interphase Corp., NEK/Helix Cable, Inc., Panasonic, Tandem Computer Inc., and The JPM Company. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended this meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. Members were present from each of the organizations except Tandem Computer Inc., which was changed to observer status. 4. Approval of Minutes - October Meeting Ft. Lauderdale, FL (X3T9.2/91-173) The minutes were approved as written. 5. Document Distribution John Lohmeyer said that the committee mailing had gone out prior to the working group meetings and thus the minutes of these meetings will be included in the January mailing. The X3 Secretariat processed the mailing expeditiously and members received it more than two weeks prior to the meeting. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina Gray at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by noon on Thursday January 16, 1992. He expects to include documents received at the January working group meetings in this mailing. As usual, minutes are also available on the SCSI BBS (316-636-8700) and will be distributed to the SCSI Reflector E-mail list. To be added to the SCSI Reflector, send an electronic message to: scsiadm@WichitaKS.NCR.COM. The following new or revised documents were distributed and/or discussed at the meeting: Document Doc Date Author Description of Document ------------- -------- --------------- --------------------------------------- X3T9.2/91-64 12/7/91 D. Liaison Reports and Call for Patents 6.1 ISO [Milligan] Gene Milligan, the X3T9 International Representative, reported that the preliminary minutes of the Bremmen meeting have been sent out for review. The 1992 SC25/WG4 meeting is scheduled for June 17-19, 1992 in Milano, Italy. 6.2 IT8 [Lohmeyer] John had nothing new to report. 6.3 Fibre Channel [Allan] Dal Allan reported that FC-PH has been revised to address the X3T9 letter ballot comments plus other comments received from Fiber Channel participants. There is a handful of issues remaining. The present plans are to re-forward FC-PH at the Feb '92 meeting. 6.4 Small Form Factor Industry Group [Allan] Most of the last SFF meeting was spent on connectors. The details of that meeting were reported in the Albuquerque working group minutes (see 91-200). The relationship with PCMCIA has progressed; at the PCMCIA meeting in Houston last month, a working group was authorized to participate in several areas of activity. Tom Hanan was appointed the mediator of this activity. Tom called a joint meeting of X3T9.2 and PCMCIA participants on Tuesday, November 26, 1992 to discuss merging the ATA interface for disk drives and the PCMCIA electrical and physical interfaces. There is a significant overlap of membership in this group with the X3T9.2 project on ATA Extensions. The X3T9.2 focus will be on protocol while the PCMCIA focus will be on electrical and packaging issues. Expected outputs from this group are: a set of recommendations to the PCMCIA Card Electrical and Card Physical document, a set of recommendations to the ATA interface, and an application note regarding the implementation. Stan Sharp, Chair of PCMCIA Card Physical Technical Committee, is the liaison to that committee. Tom Newman is the liaison to the PCMCIA Card Electrical Technical Committee. Dal Allan is the liaison to X3T9.2. Gene Milligan voiced some concerns over the international issues of this arrangement since PCMCIA is not an accredited standards committee. It has been let known to some members of PCMCIA that X3T9.2 would be willing to begin a project to make the PCMCIA interface a standard. Stan Sharp agreed to advise the PCMCIA Board of this invitation. PCMCIA has been considering ANSI accreditation and this represents another alternative. The next SFF meeting is set for Houston, TX January 13, 1992 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The afternoon session scheduled for the X3T9.2 DADI Working Group will be a joint meeting of PCMCIA and X3T9.2. 6.5 Call for Patents This is a regular agenda item to identify any potential patent issues with developing standards. Patents that may be related to various X3T9.2 projects are a PrairieTek patent on power management, a Maxtor patent on spindle synchronization, and a AMD patent application on a glitch tolerance circuit. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. Gene Milligan will coordinate a defect report on ISO 8482 for SC6. Complete. 2. Dal Allan will draft a response to the NIST X3T9 LB comment (91-169) on SCSI CAM. Completed by John Lohmeyer (see 91-205). 3. Dal Allan will draft a response to Gene Milligan's X3T9 LB comment on ATA. Completed by John Lohmeyer (see 91-206). 4. Larry Lamers will draft a response to Mr. Mori's comments (91-170) on SCSI-2. Carried over. 5. John Lohmeyer will request that X3T9 forward SCSI-2 Rev 10h for its second public review period. Complete, this is on the X3T9 agenda for its December 13, 1991 meeting. 6. John Lohmeyer will request that X3T9 return the SCSI CAM document for comment resolution. Complete. 7. John Lohmeyer will respond to the X3/SPARC Fault Isolation Study Group questionnaire that X3T9.2 believes their work relates to X3T9.2 and requests a close liaison. Complete. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 AT Attachment Status (ATA) John Lohmeyer reported that X3T9 had forwarded ATA to X3 for its first public review period. Some minor editorial changes were made to: 1. Replace the abstract with the correct one 2. Indicate that ATA is now approved by X3T9, and 3. Correct some information in Table 9-4 (as identified by Gene Milligan and Jim McGrath) that implied Set Features is a command rather than a register. The new document has been given revision number 3.0. It will now go to SPARC for a compliance review prior to a 4-month public review period. 8.2 Directly-Addressable Device Interface (DADI) John Lohmeyer reported that X3T9 had approved the DADI project proposal and that Del Shoemaker (X3T9 Chair) was holding the project proposal waiting for the meeting between the IEEE and X3 people to resolve some turf issues. The meeting still had not occurred as early December. If the meeting does not happen soon, Del plans to forward the project proposal on to SPARC anyway. 8.3 SCSI Common Access Method (CAM) Passed X3T9 letter ballot with comments attached to Bill Burr's Yes vote. Additional comments had been received from Apple Computer in October and from Extended Systems in December. X3T9.2 had requested that X3T9 return CAM in spite of its passage for comment resolution. X3T9 did and the current plan it to resolve the issues at the January working group meeting. Dal plans to include a revised CAM document in the January mailing for possible forwarding at the February meeting. 8.4 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/91-200) John Lohmeyer reported. The major event was a proposal from George Penokie to add an LRC to SCSI data transfers. This engendered considerable debate on all aspects of this topic (See also agenda item 10.6). Connector contact requirements were discussed with the conclusion being the creation of specific working group meeting to address the issue further to be chaired by Claude Mosley of IBM on January 13, 1992 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm. There was a lengthy discussion on the three SPP proposals. An editor's meeting was planned to work on the SPP architecture for early next year. See 91-200 for details on these topics, especially the meeting schedule, which is getting complex. 8.5 SCSI-2 Status SCSI-2 Revision 10h (four-up thanks to Beth Stephens) was in the November mailing. A forwarding motion was planned for the Friday X3T9 meeting. 8.6 SCSI-3 Parallel Interface (SPI) Status In addition to plain ASCII, this document is now available in HP PCL4 format on the SCSI BBS. A SPI working group meeting was planned to begin on Tuesday morning December 10 after the plenary meeting. Another SPI working group meeting is planned to January 14, 1992. John Lohmeyer noted that Kurt Chan was unable to attend the meeting, but had sent him an electronic message identifying several bugs which he plans to fix in the next revision of SPI. 8.7 SCSI-3 Interlocked Protocol (SIP) Status In addition to plain ASCII, this document is now available in HP PCL4 format on the SCSI BBS. Kurt Chan is planning to add the 32-LUN feature that had been accepted last year, but was omitted from the first revision of this document. 8.8 SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol (SPP) Status Gary Stephens prepared revision 1 of his 91-13 document for the January mailing. An editor's meeting is planned for January 27-29, 1992 to architect an SPP document that covers all the points of view (Stephens on fully encapsulated protocol, Snively on FC-4, and Smyers on P1394). 8.9 SCSI-3 Command Set (SCS) Status There is still no editor for this document. Several people have indicated personal willingness to work on the document, but none have management approval to undertake this task. Accepted proposals for this document are identified in the resolution field of the document register. 8.10 SCSI-3 Queuing Working Group (X3T9.2/91-201) George reported on the Albuquerque meeting. See 91-201 for details. 9. Old Business 9.1 SCSI Identifier Symbols [Smyers, Snively, Hagerman] Bob Snively had reported some progress at the Albuquerque working group meeting, but was not present at this meeting. 9.2 Fast Single-ended SCSI (91-64R2) [Steele] David Steele indicated that he preferred to cover this item during the SPI working group meeting on Tuesday. Please see 91-218 for details. 9.3 Removable Media Support for SCSI-3 (91-88) [Wilhelm] This issue has been pending for some time. If no new input is received by January '92, the agenda item will be dropped. 9.4 Medium Changer functions... (91-72, - 121) [Therrien, Raudebaugh] This issue has been pending for some time. If no new input is received by January '92, the agenda item will be dropped. 9.5 Defect Report on ISO 8482 [Milligan] Gene Milligan reported that he had received three letters from John Goldie regarding this issue, two of which had been made available at the Albuquerque working group meeting. Gene planned to provide John Lohmeyer the third letter from John Goldie to Dick Brandt for the January mailing. Document 91-196 summarizes the differences in EIA/TIA 485 and ISO 8482; document 91-197 provides a table comparing the principal electrical differences; and the third letter requests that ISO 8482 be revised to more closely match EIA/TIA 485. If the ISO participants do not want to revise ISO 8482, then a new project to develop an EIA/TIA 485-compliant standard will be requested. 9.6 P1394 Update [Smyers] Scott covered some of the recent changes to his document on mapping SCSI to P1394. He has clarified the queuing model to bring it into line with P1212 and expanded the model to include parallel priority. Section 3.2.4 of his document on the de-queuing algorithm changed. Scott had prepared a complete list of SCSI messages as a check list to verify which functions remain to be addressed in his document. Most have analogous mechanisms in P1212. There are three that need to be addressed. Access to INQUIRY and MODE SENSE data may have to remain as it is in SCSI-2 (with an explicit command to retrieve the data). Mapping it into P1212 space to be continuously available has met with several objections. Scott planned to work with John Lohmeyer to make the P1212, P1212.1, and P1394 documents available electronically on the SCSI BBS. He will also check on providing availability through Global Engineering Documents. 9.7 Committee Publicity Gene Milligan noted that X3.91-2375 dated 10/07/91, which is a listing of organizations receiving X3 press releases, had recently been distributed to the committee officers. It omitted most publications that report on our industry. Larry Lamers stated he had discussed the list with Kate McMillan (X3 Secretariat) and she was receptive to our inputs on more appropriate contacts. Larry planned to prepare a list to send to Kate. 10. New Business 10.1 Scanner Proposal (91-134) [Motoyama] Tetsuro Motoyama presented a proposal to define bit ordering in the window descriptor bytes, the addition of an ADCT compression type, and additional ASC/ASCQ codes for automatic document feeders. The committee requested that a proposal be developed that shows the specific changes requested. 10.2 Interconnect Concept using Compression Technology with Flexible Film [Deak] Chuck Brill introduced Fred Deak. Fred gave a presentation on the Ampliflex surface mount interconnection systems which provide high-density interconnections between circuit cards. Chuck Brill agreed to provide a paper copy of Fred's presentation for the January mailing. 10.3 Proposed connector contact requirements (91-174) [Mosley/Penokie] George Penokie gave an overview of the issues that will be discussed at the special working group for connector contact requirements on January 13 in Houston. Claude's biggest concern about the current high-density connectors is that they are all made with sheared edges as the mating surfaces. He believes this leads to excessive abrasion of the gold plating and would prefer to specify a formed contact for improved insertion cycles. 10.4 Review of new documents Periodic LRC/CRC Proposal (91-207) [Gardner] and LRC/CRC Negotiation, Commands vs. Messages (91-208) [Gardner] These documents are related to the Penokie LRC proposal (see agenda item 10.6). They were placed on the agenda for the January working group meeting. A Modest Proposal (91-209) [Spence] Bill Spence said that to date all of the remedies that have been proposed to improve single-ended signal quality have either had the effect of increasing the cable impedance or increasing the driver current, both of which result in an increase of the voltage swing seen by the receiver. His paper suggests that an equivalent improvement can be obtained by designing receivers that work with a tighter voltage swing (e.g., 0.8 volts true and 1.4 volts false). An advantage of this approach is that it can be done with no changes to the standard at all. Discussion of SIM handling of CAM Command Timeouts (91-210) [Youngwerth] and Freezing of LUN Queues following a SCSI Bus Reset (91-211) [Youngwerth] The committee asked Al Youngwerth to discuss these proposals off-line with Scott Smyers and to present the results of their work at the January working group meeting. 10.5 Agenda for the January Working Group The following draft agenda was generated for the January General SCSI Working Group meeting in Houston, TX: 1. PCMCIA/SFF report [McGrath] 2. CAM Issues (91-140, -162, -169, -210, -211) [Smyers, Burr, Youngwerth] 3. Medium Changer functions... (91-72, -121) [Therrien, Raudebaugh] 4. Removable Media Support for SCSI-3 (91-88) [Wilhelm] 5. SCSI Device Identifier [Smyers, Snively, Hagerman] 6. P1394 Update [Smyers] 7. SCSI Data Phase LRC (91-176R1, -207, -208) [Penokie, Gardner] 8. Scanner Proposal (91-134) [Motoyama] 9. 1992 Working Group Meeting Schedule 10. Report on DADI Working Group [Allan] 11. Report on SPI Working Group [Spence] 12. Report on SCSI-3 Queuing Working Group [Penokie] 13. Report on SPI Connector Contact [] 14. Do fast data timings apply to phases other than the DATA phases? [Stai] 10.6 SCSI Data Phase LRC [Penokie] (91-176R1) The question of why do anything came up immediately. Why propose a solution to a problem (if any) that is not characterized? If the failure mode of poor signal quality on REQ and ACK is a double clocking, then the system will hang and LRC won't help. George Penokie contended that LRC protects against certain errors that would not be detected with just parity. In some cases the real need for LRC is to protect against the perception of vulnerability. Ed Gardner suggested that LRC on just data does not go far enough. He wants to protect the entire I/O process. Ed submitted two proposals for consideration at the January working group meeting (91-207 & -208). A straw poll was taken on whether we should add some form of protection in addition to parity: 15 yes, 15 no. The topic was remanded to the January working group. 11. Review of Action Items 1. Larry Lamers will draft a response to Mr. Mori's comments (91-170) on SCSI-2. 2. Scott Smyers will investigate making the P1212, P1212.1, and P1394 documents available electronically on the SCSI BBS. He will also investigate providing these documents through Global Engineering Documents. 12. Meeting Schedule The next meeting of X3T9.2 will be February 17-18, 1991 at the Doubletree Hotel (512-454-3737) in Austin, TX hosted by IBM Corporation. The group name is X3T9. The room rate is $90.00 single or double, including tax. The reservation deadline for this rate is January 24, 1992.
