Review of Action Items 12. Meeting Schedule 12.1 General Working Group Schedule 13. Adjournment Results of Meeting 1. Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday October 14, 1991. He thanked Buzz Rigsbee of Boeing Computer Services for hosting the meeting at a fine hotel. John said that the X3 Secretariat prefers receiving membership changes on the "X3 Subgroup Membership Forms" which were available on the document table. He said that while he will continue to accept change information for the attendance database on the forms at the end of the attendance list, people should use the X3 forms to insure the X3 Secretariat has the latest membership information. The forms should be mailed to the X3 Secretariat with a copy to John Lohmeyer. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the attendance list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the following addition: 10.12 P1394 Update [Smyers] 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two out of three consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the Chair of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The Chair indicated that since the last meeting the merger of AT&T and NCR had become official. John Lohmeyer will be the principal member with Joe Lawlor the alternate member. Since AT&T did not have a vote, this does not affect the total number of voting organizations. Bill Spence had left Texas Instruments and had become an ENDL Associate. However, Bill attended this meeting as the representative for Texas Instruments. Representatives from SGS-Thomson and Yamaichi attended the August meeting and had requested voting membership in X3T9.2. Neil Mitchell was present for SGS- Thomson and was granted voting membership. If a representative from Yamaichi is present at the December meeting, then they will be granted voting membership at that meeting. With the 3 terminations for nonattendance (see 3.1), the X3T9.2 voting membership is at 57 organizations down from 59 at the last meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of the people present at the meeting and enclosure (2) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The Chair said he had sent jeopardy letters to letters to 23 people from 9 organizations: Advanced Vision Research, Archive Corp., Data General Corp., Document Imaging Systems Corp., Distributed Logic Corp., JAE, National Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, and The JPM Company. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended this meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. Members were present from each of the organizations except: Advanced Vision Research, Document Imaging Systems Corp., and Distributed Logic Corp. The members from the organizations not represented were changed to observer status. 4. Approval of Minutes - August Meeting Boulder, CO (X3T9.2/91-137) The minutes were approved as written. 5. Document Distribution John Lohmeyer said that the committee mailing had gone out prior to the working group meetings and thus the minutes of these meetings will be included in the November mailing. The mailing had been divided into two parts due to its large size. The X3 Secretariat processed the mailing expeditiously and members received it more than two weeks prior to the meeting. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina Gray at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by noon on November 4, 1991. He noted that the mailing will not contain the results of the November working group meetings. These minutes will be available on the SCSI BBS (316-636-8700) and will be distributed to the SCSI Reflector E-mail list. To be added to the SCSI Reflector, send an electronic message to: scsiadm@WichitaKS.NCR.COM. Japan provided a private communication as input to the X3T9.2 SCSI-2 project. As a result of the discussion the following resolutions were unanimously passed and the following action items were registered: FINAL TEXT OF RESOLUTIONS WG 4-1: WG 4 resolves to request the SC 25 secretariat to send a letter to the IEEE Registration Authority stating: "Thank you for your letter dated 1990-12-11. ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25/WG 4 has discussed your letter during its meeting in Bremen, 1991-09-30 / 10-02. WG 4 will request that SC 25 widely distribute your Request Form and instructions for IEEE Assignment of a 48-Bit LAN Globally Assigned Address Block and promote their use in FDDI implementations. This will facilitate interconnection through bridges and/or gateways of FDDI networks with each other and with 8802 type networks. WG 4 welcomes the offer from IEEE to continue to act as the registration authority for 48 bit FDDI MAC addresses. However it is not clear who within IEEE should receive requests for 48 bit MAC addresses required for inclusion within the FDDI standards. In this regard IEEE is requested to provide this information." WG 4-2: WG 4 resolves to remind the SC secretariat to take the necessary steps to discontinue the IPI Part 7: Generic command set for communications project, since during the call to member bodies to nominate candidate project editors no appropriate candidates were nominated. WG 4-3: WG 4 resolves to request the SC 25 secretariat to take the necessary steps to reserve the following standards numbers to continue the subdivision of families of standards: 9314-7 FDDI PHY-2 9314-8 FDDI MAC-2 9314-9 FDDI Low Cost Fiber (LCF) PMD 9314-10 FDDI Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) PMD 9314-11 FDDI Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) PMD 9314-12 FDDI SONET Mapping (SPM) 9314-13 FDDI Conformance Testing PICS (CTPICS) 9314-20 FDDI Follow-on LAN (FFOL) PMD 9314-21 FDDI Follow-on LAN (FFOL) PHY 9314-22 FDDI Follow-on LAN (FFOL) Service Multiplexer (SMUX) 9314-23 FDDI Follow-on LAN (FFOL) Isochronous MAC (IMAC) 9314-24 FDDI Follow-on LAN (FFOL) Asynchronous MAC (AMAC) 9314-25 FDDI Follow-on LAN (FFOL) SMT 9316-1 SCSI-2 9316-2 SCSI Common Access Method (CAM) 9316-3 SCSI Command Set (SCS) 9316-4 SCSI Interlocked Protocol (SIP) 9316-5 SCSI Parallel Interface (SPI) 9316-6 SCSI Packetized Protocol (SPP) 9316-7 SCSI Serial Interface (SSI) 9318-8 IPI-2 Enhanced 11 518-2 HIPPI Framing Protocol (FP) 11 518-3 HIPPI IEEE Logical Link Control Interface (LE) 11 518-4 HIPPI IPI-3 Mapping 11 518-5 HIPPI Memory Interface (MI) 11 518-6 HIPPI Switch Control (SC) TBD -1 Fiber Channel (FC) Physical (PH) TBD -2 Fiber Channel (FC) SCSI Mapping TBD -3 Fiber Channel (FC) IPI-3 Mapping TBD -4 Fiber Channel (FC) HIPPI-FP Mapping TBD -5 Fiber Channel (FC) Fabric TBD -6 Fiber Channel (FC) Low Cost Fabric (LCF) WG 4-4: WG 4 resolves to request the SC 25 secretariat to take the necessary steps to issue DIS 11 518-1 HIPPI Physical (PH) when the revision is received incorporating the resolution of the CD comments. It may make sense to continue the Scanner working group activities in Bob's group. The unresolved question is how to document such work. Should it be included in the SCS document or become an IT8 document? 6.3 Fibre Channel [Allan] Dal Allan reported on the recent Fibre Channel activities. There had been two meetings since the last X3T9.2 meeting. The group has been addressing the FC- PH comments from the X3T9 letter ballot. The big issue at the October FC meetings was the selection of a fiber optic connector. There were two contenders, the duplex SC and the duplex ST. The FDDI people are also debating the same two connectors. 6.4 Small Form Factor Industry Group [Allan] Dal Allan reported on the Small Form Factor meeting in St. Paul on September 16. There had been a disappointing vote on horizontal SFF connectors. Only 8 of 28 organizations had voted. There was a 5:3 marginal win, however this is not a significant consensus on horizontal connectors. Selection of a vertical connector seems to be preferred, but these solutions are all under non-disclosure, creating a very confusing situation. There was a desire expressed to move the mounting holes out of the way to increase the board real estate. At the Albuquerque meeting (November 11), some PCMCIA people also will attend to share information. 6.5 IEEE Disk Attachment Study Group Larry Lamers reported on the IEEE NESCOM meeting September 25, 1991. The Project Approval Request generated by the DASG was not approved by NESCOM. See 91-166 for details. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. John Lohmeyer will take the SCSI-2 CAM XPT/SIM document (90-186 Rev 2.5) to X3T9. Complete. 2. John Lohmeyer will take the AT Attachment document (90-143 Rev 2.6) to X3T9. Complete. 3. John Lohmeyer will take the Project Proposal for ATA Extensions (91-104 Rev 1) to X3T9. Complete--This is on the X3T9 agenda for October 18. 4. John Lohmeyer will take the Project Proposal for Directly-Addressable Device Interface (91-108 Rev 1) to X3T9. Complete--This is on the X3T9 agenda for October 18. 5. John Lohmeyer will take the draft response to the X3T9 LB negative on forwarding SCSI-1 for reaffirmation to X3T9. Complete. 6. John Lohmeyer will take the draft position paper on the IEEE Disk Attach project to X3T9. Complete. 7. John Lohmeyer will take to X3T9 the X3T9.2 recommendation that X3T9 require a host of an X3T9 or subgroup meeting to seek X3T9 approval before finalizing any meeting arrangements which will have daily hotel rates, including tax and parking, higher than $100." Complete--X3T9 passed this motion in August. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 AT Attachment Status (ATA) ATA passed the X3T9 letter ballot with one comment attached to Gene Milligan's "yes" vote (see 91-___). John Lohmeyer read Gene's comment. Dal Allan accepted an action item to draft a response to Gene. 8.2 Directly-Addressable Device Interface (DADI) The project proposal is on the X3T9 agenda for Friday. Del Shoemaker had promised at the NESCOM meeting to hold this project proposal until the IEEE turf issues are resolved. 8.3 SCSI Common Access Method (CAM) SCSI CAM passed the X3T9 letter ballot with one comment attached to Bill Burr's "yes" vote (see 91-166). John Lohmeyer read Bill's comment. Dal Allan accepted an action item to draft a response to Bill. 8.4 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/91-156) John distributed copies of the minutes of the last working group meeting in St. Paul, MN. He mentioned that the group had spent some time investigating what a target should do if a CONTINUE I/O PROCESS message is received with no prior TARGET TRANSFER DISABLE message. The working group had defined recommended protocol to cover this case. He referred the participants to item 16 in 91-156 for details. 8.5 SCSI-2 Status SCSI-2 Revision 10g had been included in the September mailing and was on the agenda for forwarding later in the meeting. Several minor editorial problems had been identified and one substantive editing error was found. The substantive error had reversed the PREVENT ALLOW MEDIUM REMOVAL case that is permitted to break a device reservation. Consequently, Larry Lamers had prepared Revision 10h to correct the errors. 8.6 SCSI-3 Status Kurt Chan reported that SCSI-3 Physical Interface Rev 2 is nearly ready for distribution. SCSI-3 Interlocked Protocol should also be available for the next mailing. John noted that it is time to get off dead center on the packetization document; he wanted to schedule a separate working group meeting on this topic. 8.7 SCSI-3 Queuing Working Group (X3T9.2/91-157 R1) George Penokie reported on the recent two meetings. See 91-157R1 for minutes on the St. Paul meeting and see item 9.8 for information on the Monday evening meeting. 8.8 SCSI-3 Terminator/Drivers Working Group (X3T9.2/91-168) See document 91-168 for details. The meeting was interesting and productive but did not yield any solutions. The individual silicon suppliers are going to develop proposed wording for describing active negation drivers in SCSI-3. A possible problem with active negation transceivers being used on a bus without proper termination was identified. 9. Old Business 9.1 SCSI Identifier Symbols (91-49R1,-63,-73) [Lohmeyer, Medlinski, Allan] There was nothing new to report. Dal Allan recommended that future agendas list Smyers, Snively, and Hagerman as they now have the action item. 9.2 SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol: encapsulate vs. native Fiber Channel John Lohmeyer lobbied to get this item moving. In addition to Fibre Channel, P1394 may have need of the packetized protocol. The November working group will devote Wednesday afternoon to this activity. 9.3 Fast Single-ended SCSI (91-64R1) [Steele] David Steele was not present, but had attended the Terminator/Driver meeting in Irvine (see 8.8). John Lohmeyer reported that David plans to revise his document to reflect the findings of the Terminator/Driver working group. 9.4 Removable Media Support for SCSI-3 (91-88) [Wilhelm] This topic had been discussed at the St. Paul meeting. The working group had felt that the proposal was too specific to DOS and had recommended that Al Wilhelm contact Gary Stephens for information on how the tape section had dealt with the similar problem. To date, Gary had not been contacted. No action was taken. 9.5 Call for patents related to X3T9.2 projects Dal Allan mentioned that he continues to receive inquiries about the PrairieTek patent on power management. There has been no PrairieTek position received since the June 20 letter (91-92). Larry Lamers reported that he is still working on getting a letter regarding a Maxtor patent. Dal requested that a "Call for Patents" be made a permanent agenda item. 9.6 Project proposal for Flat File Command Set (91-109 R1) [Allan] It was the consensus of the September Working Group that the FFS work should continue development under the SCSI-3 command set project until it can be determined if a separate project is needed. Jim McGrath submitted a document proposing a coordinated press release on the FFS work. Please contact Jim if you are interested in participating on the press release. 9.7 Medium Changer functions... (91-72, - 121) [Therrien, Raudebaugh] No one present knew of any activity on this issue since the last meeting. 9.8 SCSI-3 Tagged Queuing Model (91-98) [Penokie] George Penokie summarized the Queuing Working Group activities. The group has agreed to focus on SCSI-3 issues. The group had met at St. Paul (see 91- 157R1) and again Monday evening during the plenary meeting. Jim McGrath had made a presentation to the working group on a three-level implementation approach, which defines queuing in terms of events visible on the SCSI bus. This approach does not assume an internal implementation of the target. Steve Cornaby had made a presentation to the working group on using threads as an additional control layer. The idea is to provide multiple groups of ordered I/O Processes from the same initiator to better support multi-tasking. Doug Hagerman brought in the sections of IPI that dealt with resource determination. Dal Allan volunteered to ask some people who had implemented IPI queuing to come to the next SCSI-3 Queuing Working Group meeting. 9.9 Format Device Log Page (91-106R2) [Pickford] Doug reviewed rev 3 of his proposal. A few further changes were made. Larry Lamers moved and Doug Pickford seconded that 91-106R3 as revised be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion passed 26:0. 9.10 Should SCSI-3 SPI Require SCSI Cables to be fully populated? [Lamers] Larry was not ready to discuss this item. 10. New Business 10.1 Forwarding Motion for SCSI-2 (86-109 R10g) John Lohmeyer read a letter from David DeRoche of Data General regarding a question about how redundant tagged commands are handled. Specifically, is a CHECK CONDITION status returned for each aborted I/O process or just the current I/O Process? The consensus was that the document is clear on what happens to an aborted I/O Process; (that is, there is no pending status or sense data). Only the current I/O process is terminated with CHECK CONDITION status. All of the other I/O Processes are aborted; therefore, no status is returned. Larry Lamers informed the committee of several editorial changes and one substantive change he had made in Rev 10h. The substantive change fixed an editing error, which had resulted in not correctly incorporating document 90- 85 that had been accepted in June 1990. Larry Lamers moved and Bob Simpson seconded that SCSI-2 (X3T9.2/86-109 Rev 10g) as revised (Rev 10h) be forwarded to X3T9 for further processing. Bill Spence arrived shortly after the vote, preserving Texas Instrument's membership, but too late to vote. 2) Written votes were accepted from several members who were absent at the time of the vote. The motion passed 40:1:0:15. The one no vote was a written vote from Jim McGrath (Molex) who arrived later in the meeting. He explained that he had voted "no" on the "as revised" version of the motion, because he did not know what revisions might be made. Mr. Mori's questions on SCSI-2 (91-170) were discussed. Larry Lamers accepted an action item to write a response to Mr. Mori. 10.2 SCSI-3 dual porting (91-143) [Kolansky, Houlder] John gave a brief update on this topic. The key issue is whether a reset on one bus affects the other bus. Gene Milligan suggested that this behavior be controlled by software via a bit in a mode page. Gene agreed to communicate this suggestion to Gerry Houlder. 10.3 Dealing with multi-initiator issues (91-118, -150) [Hahn, Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer spoke to the issue of how the agreements on SDTR and WDTR are reached and their relationship. John Lohmeyer moved and Bill Spence seconded that 91-150 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion passed 29:0. 10.4 AEN via Request Sense (91-148) [Williams] This proposal was withdrawn at the request of Jeff Williams. 10.5 Review of new documents Jim McGrath had submitted a new document (91-164) proposing the an X3 Trade Association be established. Jim felt that such an association could provide several valuable services that are currently not available under X3T9.2. Such services include financial support for technical editing, standards promotion, marketing support, educational seminars, registration authority, and Logo trademarking. Stan Sharp explained how the PCMCIA trade association functions and its fee structure. John Lohmeyer pointed out that CBEMA is the X3 trade association, but that it covers a much larger scope than just I/O interfaces. Perhaps we should instead consider an I/O Interface Trade Association. There was general agreement that such an association was worth investigating further. 10.6 Agenda for the November Working Group The following draft agenda was generated for the November SCSI Working Group meeting in Albuquerque, NM: 1. PCMCIA/SFF report [McGrath] 2. CAM Issues (91-140, -162, -169) [Smyers, Burr] 3. Medium Changer functions... (91-72, -121) [Therrien, Raudebaugh] 4. Removable Media Support for SCSI-3 (91-88) [Wilhelm] 5. SCSI Device Identifier [Smyers, Snively, Hagerman] 6. SCSI-3 dual porting (91-143) [Kolansky, Houlder] 7. SCSI-3 Queuing Model [Penokie] 8. Defect Report on ISO 8482 [Milligan] 9. SCSI-3 S/E Cable/Terminator requirements [Spence] 10. Fast Single Ended Specification (91-64R1) [Steele] 11. P1394 Update [Smyers] 12. SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol (SPP) 13. 1992 Working Group Meeting Schedule 10.7 Presentation: Buffer Insertion Ring with Fairness [Ofek] Due to late arrival, this presentation was given after the meeting ended in the Low-Cost Fabric meeting (Fibre Channel). Please contact Wayne Sanderson if you are interested in this topic. 10.8 CAM Issues (91-140, -162, -169) [Smyers, Burr] Scott Smyers had prepared a rev 1 of the 91-140 document at the request of the working group. Dal Allan moved and Scott Smyers seconded that X3T9.2 request that X3T9 return the SCSI CAM document to X3T9.2 to address the comments from NIST and Apple Computer. The motion passed 22:0. The timeout value (see 91-162) affects implementations; members should contact Scott Smyers. 10.9 DIFFSENS loading issue (91-159) [Lohmeyer] Due ESD protection diodes in receivers, the DIFFSENS line could be loaded through the diodes when a device is powered off. John Lohmeyer has raised the issue at the St. Paul meeting and the consensus of the working group had been to move the diode from the +5 volt line to the DIFFSENS input. John had documented the suggestion in 91-159. John Lohmeyer moved and Bill Spence seconded that 91-159 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion passed 26:0. 10.10 Presentation: PCMCIA Update [Sharp] Stan Sharp, Chairman of Card Physical group of PCMCIA, gave a presentation on PCMCIA (see 91-171). At Dal Allan's request, Stan agreed to provide the table of contents of their specification for the X3T9.2 mailing. The PCMCIA office telephone number is 408-720-0107. The next meeting is in November 18-19, 1991 in Houston. An invitation to any meeting can be obtained by calling the PCMCIA office. 10.11 Response to X3/SPARC Fault Isolation Study Group Questionnaire [Lohmeyer] The Fault Isolation Study Group sent the chair a questionnaire asking whether their proposed project relates to the X3T9.2 work. John Lohmeyer suggested that the response should be that their work definitely applies to us and to request a close liaison. The group agreed and John accepted an action item to communicate this response to the Fault Isolation Study Group. 10.12 P1394 Update [Smyers] Scott Smyers gave a presentation on P1394, a low-cost serial bus (see 91-172). It is compatible with the P1212 Control Status Register memory mapped standard. P1394 has isochronous capability. This guarantees a data transfer delivery rate, useful for ISDN, CD, DAT, and video applications. EMC considerations for FCC class B certification were an important consideration as well as better ergonomics for interconnecting devices. There are no hardware-assigned bus ID's and no terminators. The interconnection can be made in any fashion as long as it is non-cyclical (that is, no extra cables) and there are no more than 6 hops between devices. P1394 uses a 64-bit flat hierarchical address space. There are some significant changes since May, 1991: P1394 no longer uses 4B5B encoding; it now uses a clock plus NRZ data. This change simplifies that silicon, avoids a patent issue, and increases the data transfer rates. P1394 now performs resynchronization at each hop, thus avoiding cumulative jitter. 100, 200, and 400 Mbit transfer rates have been defined and can exist on same bus. Devices can negotiate for the highest mutually supported transfer rate. Scott plans to have a first-draft document on mapping SCSI to P1394 at the November working group meeting. 11. Review of Action Items 1. Gene Milligan will coordinate a defect report on ISO 8482 for SC6. 2. Dal Allan will draft a response to the NIST X3T9 LB comment (91-169) on SCSI CAM. 3. Dal Allan will draft a response to Gene Milligan's X3T9 LB comment on ATA. 4. Larry Lamers will draft a response to Mr. Mori's comments (91-170) on SCSI-2. 5. John Lohmeyer will request that X3T9 forward SCSI-2 Rev 10h for its second public review period. 6. John Lohmeyer will request that X3T9 return the SCSI CAM document for comment resolution. 7. John Lohmeyer will respond to the X3/SPARC Fault Isolation Study Group questionnaire that X3T9.2 believes their work relates to X3T9.2 and requests a close liaison. 12. Meeting Schedule The next meeting of X3T9.2 will be December 9-10, 1991 at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego, CA hosted by Vitro Corporation. The group name is ANSI. The room rate is $99.00 single or $122 double, including tax. The reservation cutoff date is November 16, 1991.
