Date: August 30, 1991 To: X3T9.2 Membership From: John B. Lohmeyer, X3T9.2 Chairman Subject: SCSI-3 Scanner Working Group Meeting -- August 21, 1991 John Lohmeyer called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday August 21, 1991. He thanked Roger Cummings of StorageTek for hosting the meeting in Boulder, CO. This was the second SCSI-3 working group meeting; the first had been April 24 in St. Petersburg Beach, FL. The following people attended the meeting: Name Organization ----------------------- --------------------------- Mr. Robert J. Prichard Dainippon Screen Mfg Co Ltd Mr. Del Shoemaker Digital Equipment Corp. Mr. Ed Beeman Hewlett Packard Co. Mr. Lawrence J. Lamers Maxtor Corp. Mr. John Lohmeyer NCR Corp. Mr. Satwinder S. Mangat Ricoh Corporation 6 People Present Results of meeting John noted that he had received a phone call from Andy Bernstein prior to the meeting saying that Gavin Villapiano was no longer with Sharp. Andy was unable to attend the meeting, but remains interested in enhancing the Scanner command set. John had also received a phone message from George Tharakan who also was unable to attend the meeting. John pointed out that Gavin and George had accepted almost all of the action items from the previous meeting and, to his knowledge, none had been completed. Robert Prichard, Chairman of IT8/WG14, spoke about the history and organization of IT8. IT8 has completed several ANSI standards, including IT8.4 which uses SCSI as an interface to Digital Direct Color Proofers. The work of IT8/WG14 is to define how to interface color scanners with SCSI. Upcoming meetings of IT8/WG14 are in Florida in late October and in Washington, DC in December. George Battrick of Crosfield Electronics Ltd. plans to present a strawman proposal at the October meeting. It is hoped that the two groups (IT8/WG14 and X3T9.2 Scanner Working Group) can work together to define a common scanner command set. The exact method of publication (IT8 vs. X3) remains to be resolved. To assist this liaison activity, John provided Robert a list of X3T9.2 people who had expressed interest in SCSI scanner devices. Ed Beeman spoke about the current HP scanner products which uses SCSI to interface to Macintosh machines. However, these products use a non-standard command set (prior to SCSI-2) and the Processor Device type. Ed noted that this had not been a problem to date because they also provide driver software. He felt that the more important standards for them were the file format standards. Ed said that while the command set they use is not SCSI-2, it is documented and could be used by other vendors. Ed agreed to send documentation on the HP command set to Robert Prichard. John proposed that subsequent X3T9.2 Scanner Working Group meetings be scheduled only if substantive proposals are received. He encouraged X3T9.2 people who are interested in scanners to participate in the IT8/WG14 activity and requested that WG14 proposals be reviewed by X3T9.2 people for architectural consistency with SCSI-3.
