Adjournment Results of Meeting 1. Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday August 19, 1991. He thanked Roger Cummings of StorageTek for hosting the meeting in a beautiful and convenient location. John noted that the agenda was quite full and requested the members assist in keeping the meeting moving along. John said that the X3 Secretariat prefers receiving membership changes on the "X3 Subgroup Membership Forms" which were available on the document table. He said that while he will continue to accept change information for the attendance database at the end of the attendance list, people should use the forms to insure the X3 Secretariat has the latest membership information. The forms should be mailed to the X3 Secretariat with a copy to John Lohmeyer. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the attendance list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the following additions: 8.7 SCSI Technical Information Bulletin Status 9.7 X3T9 Letter Ballot Negative on SCSI-1 Reaffirmation 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two out of three consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the Chair of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The Chair indicated that since the last meeting Summus Computer Systems had been acquired and that the new name for the organization is IGM Data Autoloader Div. Bill Galloway remains the principal member. No new organizations joined the committee at the meeting. With the two terminations for nonattendance (see 3.1), the X3T9.2 voting membership is at 59 organizations down from 61 at the last meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees at the meeting and enclosure (2) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The Chair said he had sent jeopardy letters to letters to 20 people from 9 organizations: Ancot Corp., Berk- Tek, Inc., Eastman Kodak Co., Iomega Corp., Mitsubishi Electronics America, National Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, and UNISYS. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended this meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. Members were present from each of the organizations except: Eastman Kodak Co. and Mitsubishi Electronics America. The members from the organizations not represented were changed to observer status. 4. Approval of Minutes - June Meeting Minneapolis, MN (X3T9.2/91-91 R2) The minutes were approved as written. John asked whether members found the various X3T9.2 database reports at the end of the minutes valuable. He proposed eliminating the reports from the committee mailings, but retaining the electronic versions of these reports on the SCSI BBS. About 13 folks were in favor of having a committee list in every mailing. The rest were generally apathetic. John promised to continue the reports, but stated he may condense them. 5. Document Distribution John Lohmeyer said that he had delayed the committee mailing about a week so that the latest CAM and ATA documents could be included for possible forwarding. This meant that the mailing also included the results of the July working group meetings. The X3 Secretariat processed the mailing expeditiously and members received it more than two weeks prior to the meeting. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina Gray at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by noon on September 10, 1991. He noted that the mailing will not contain the results of the September working group meetings. These minutes will be available on the SCSI BBS (316- 636-8700) and will be distributed to the SCSI Reflector E-mail list. To be added to the SCSI Reflector, send an electronic message to: scsiadm@WichitaKS.NCR.COM. Liaison Reports 6.1 ISO [Milligan] Gene Milligan, the X3T9 International Representative, provided the following report: The Bremen working group announcement, agenda, and summary of project activity has been distributed to the delegates. Copies of the distribution are available for the committee officers. A fax has been announced by the WG 4 Secretariat but not received. It is purported to address questions about SCSI and security. The FDDI HRC DIS document has been forwarded by the SC 25 Secretariat to Geneva for the purpose of issuing a letter ballot. The IR has submitted the necessary correspondence for the United States to: Not volunteer to edit IPI Communications and support its withdrawal; vote Yes on CD 11518-1 with a request that HIPPI-PH revision 8.1 plus a revised annex be substituted prior to issuing a DIS (Cummings should be prepared to address the changes in 8.1 and the annex); and vote YES on FDDI SMF-PMD CD 9314-4 with corrections. The long missing DIS letter ballot results on the IPI-2 Tape have been received. The DIS passed 15:2:5. The negatives were from Germany and Japan. Comments were also received from Denmark, UK, and USSR. Copies of the comments are available for the IPI-2 Tape people. Cummings should be prepared to discuss the comments at the WG 4 meeting. Agenda items that appear to be likely to have more than cursory discussion are: Registration of MAC addresses; PHY-2; IPI-2 Tape comments; IPI Enhanced Physical status; ESDI project editor; the SCSI-2 CD schedule; and terms for Fiber Optic Lans. 6.2 IT8 [Lohmeyer] There was nothing new to report. 6.3 Fiber Channel [Allan] Dal Allan reported on Fiber Channel activities. A number of outstanding issues in the document were squared away. A letter ballot was conducted at X3T9. The letter ballot closed on Aug 2, 1991. There were several comments received. The fabric working group continues to address fabric issues. They have received two new fabric proposals: the "loop" proposal from Seagate and "distributed fabric" proposal from CANSTAR. The CANSTAR proposal is fully compliant for interconnection of cabinets and when combined with the "loop" proposal it looks possible to do low-cost fiber channel with SCSI protocol. Bob Snively has submitted a proposal for transporting SCSI over fiber. 6.4 Small Form Factor Industry Group [Allan] Dal Allan reported on the SFF activities. The primary concern is to address the issues related to the shrinking disk drive. Consider a drive that does not use cables to interconnect, is 10 mm high; and has very little room for a connector. Current connectors are 8 mm high, so there is a need for low-height profile. Both 3M and AMP have a proposal for such a connector. There is a need for a good solution to vertical insertion problem. Currently only naked pins are available and this is not very appealing. The SFF group is working with PCMCIA to add support for the ATA interface, however, the relationship is not consistent. 6.5 IEEE Disk Attachment Study Group [McGrath] Dal Allan reported on the DASG activities. The DASG meeting held on Friday, August 16, 1991 was a highly charged event. The meeting polarized along IEEE vs. X3T9 lines. In June, Martin Freeman submitted a PAR (Project Approval Request) to IEEE for the development of a disk interface. In response to this submittal, Dal Allan submitted a letter to NESCOM requesting a delay in approval until X3T9 could respond. A summit meeting of X3T9 and IEEE is scheduled for September 25, 1991 in New York. See document X3T9.2/91-128 for details. Bob Snively moved and Chuck Brill seconded that a position paper be drafted and submitted to X3T9 on the development of a memory model interface within X3T9. The motion passed 37 yes, 0 no. The position paper was drafted during the meeting and assigned document number 91-136. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. Gary Stephens will write a response to the David Moore letter (91-43) on sequential-access issues. Complete; see 91-103. 2. John Lohmeyer will take the draft response to the EDS no vote to X3T9 for their action. Complete; SPARC has accepted the response and project number 881-D has been assigned to the project. 3. John Lohmeyer will develop a proposal on handling contingent allegiance conditions during tagged queuing. This action item was actually completed by the Working Group (see item 8.4.1). 4. Larry Lamers will include the clarification from 91-070 item 15 in SCSI-2. Complete. 5. Jim Mcgrath will give a presentation on PCMCIA Monday evening August 19, 1991. Dropped -- Jim was unable to be present that day. 6. John Lohmeyer will request that X3T9 reaffirm X3.131-1986, Small Computer System Interface, as an American National Standard. Complete, X3T9 has issued a letter ballot on the subject. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 AT Attachment Status (ATA) Jim McGrath had requested two lines be included on feature codes for enable cache and disable cache. These were accepted for Rev 2.5, but due to an editing error were not included. Joe Chen submitted 91-132 expressing concerns about the changes made to recovery from sleep mode in rev 2.5. The effect of this was another change to allow both software reset and hardware reset recovery from sleep mode. Gene Milligan asked that the term "false information" in section 9.5 for post boot be changed to vendor unique. Revision 2.6 was prepared during a lunch hour mini-working group to address the issues raised. 8.2 ESDI [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer reported that ESDI had been approved by ANSI on July 2, 1991 as X3.170A-1991. Publication should occur shortly. This item will be removed from future agendas. Dal Allan has requested a copy from Harvey Rosenfeld of ANSI that is suitable for reproduction by ISO. 8.3 SCSI Common Access Method (CAM) The CAM XPT/SIM document distributed in the mailing (Rev 2.5) includes the comments from the July meeting. (See agenda item 10.1.) 8.4 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/91-110) 8.4.1 Unexpected Disconnect Recommendation This issue engendered unexpected discord. The basic problem is that the current wording of contingent allegiance permits the target to decide whether or not a contingent allegiance condition will be created on an unexpected disconnect. This creates a dilemma for the initiator if this occurs during tagged I/O Processes because the initiator does not know whether to issue a tagged or untagged REQUEST SENSE command following the unexpected disconnect. If the initiator guesses wrong, the target is required by the rules in 6.5.2 to treat the I/O Process as an incorrect initiator connection and all I/O Processes for the initiator are cleared -- not particularly friendly. Three solutions are possible: 1. Never permit a CA following an unexpected disconnect. 2. Always require a CA following an unexpected disconnect. 3. Make several changes in 6.5.2 and 6.8.2 (and elsewhere?) to permit either tagged or untagged REQUEST SENSE commands without causing an incorrect initiator connection. The proposed solution for which Larry Lamers had wording was number 1. Larry argued that solution number 2 does not work because there are cases where the target and initiator are not in agreement that an unexpected disconnect occurred. Larry opposed solution number 3 because of the ripple effect of this change is too likely to cause other problems. He suggested that this be a SCSI-3 topic. Larry proposed a fourth alternative of using a UNIT ATTENTION condition in this case, but there was some opposition that this could also result in I/O Processes being discarded depending on the setting of the QErr bit. Option 1 was finally adopted, but not the explanatory wording that Larry had prepared for the end of section 5.1: Bill Galloway moved and Bill Spence seconded that the phrase "and may optionally exist following an unexpected disconnect" be deleted from section 6.6. The motion passed 14 yes and 5 no. 8.4.2 Tagged Queuing Clarification Larry Lamers presented foils showing several clarifications to the tagged queuing wording he had prepared. Bob Snively objected to the removal of the words "..for that initiator.." in 7.3.3.1 par 4. The editor's revised wording for the first sentence was accepted: "A value of zero in this field specifies that the target shall order the actual execution sequence for the commands queued with SIMPLE QUEUE tags such that data integrity is maintained for that initiator." 8.5 SCSI-2 Status Larry Lamers presented foils on sections with wording changes. As a result the words "...for the I_T_x nexus." were added to item 1 in section 7.2.14. Also, in par 3, add "other" so the phrase reads "...has no other sense data..". John Lohmeyer had sent out an E-mail proposal to eliminate several of the appendices. Since no one had volunteered to bring these up to consistent usage of SCSI-2 terminology, it was agreed that the most expedient solution was to delete the following appendices: B, C, D, E, and F. It is possible that Appendices E and F may resurface as Technical Information Bulletins at some latter date. 8.6 SCSI-3 Status Kurt Chan reported on the current work on the SPI document. He had been holding the SIP document waiting for a more finalized SCSI-2 document as a basis. 8.7 SCSI Technical Information Bulletin Status John Lohmeyer said that during a phone call with Lynn Barra he had found out that the SCSI Technical Information Bulletin #1 was on hold for unknown reasons. This is the TIB on SCSI-2 logging. John asked Lynn to continue holding the TIB until the task group could address whether the TIB was still appropriate in light of SCSI-2 being returned to X3T9.2. The committee agreed that the TIB should remain on hold until SCSI- 2 goes forward again. 9. Old Business 9.1 Control of SCSI Device Power (91-014R5) [Penokie] The working group recommended acceptance of revision 6. George Penokie moved and Bill Spence seconded that 91-014R6 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion passed 25 yes and 0 no. 9.2 SCSI Identifier Symbols (91-49R1,-63,-73) [Lohmeyer, Medlinski, Allan] John Lohmeyer recapped the activity from the last working group. The outcome is a consensus on ground rules for development of appropriate icons. Three companies (Sun, DEC, and Apple) have volunteered to develop a proposal from their collective icon folks. Bob Snively reported that some progress has been made -- when a proposal is written, it will be brought back to the committee. 9.3 SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol: encapsulate vs. native Fiber Channel Bob Snively had prepared a document and a presentation on an FC-4 document for SCSI. He showed the similarity of CAM, SCSA, ASPI, and FC-4 in basic architecture. Bob's document would map SCSI information structures (command block, data, response block) to Fiber Channel sequences. Chairman's note: Bob's document performs a similar function to Gary Stephens' SPP document. There is still considerable debate over which is the ONE TRUE WAY to perform this task. I plan to let both approaches progress until there is consensus on which method is right or a consensus develops on how to merge these documents. 9.4 Fast Single-ended SCSI (91-64) [Steele] This topic was deferred to the September working group. 9.5 Floptical (tm) issues in SCSI-3 (91-88) [Wilhelm] This topic was deferred to the September working group. 9.6 Patent issue concerning Power Control (91-77, -92) [Allan] Dal Allan reported that the Prairie Tek patent is likely to be sold. A letter from Mr. Jochim of Prairie Tek (91-92) indicated that the company is being reorganized and that no Prairie Tek position could be stated at this time. 9.7 X3T9 Letter Ballot Negative on SCSI-1 Reaffirmation John Lohmeyer presented the draft response to Gene Milligan's X3T9 no vote on the reaffirmation of SCSI-1. Gene Milligan moved and Bill Spence seconded that the response be accepted without objection. The motion passed unanimously. 10. New Business 10.1 Forwarding Motion for SCSI-2 Common Access Method XPT/SIM (90-186) Dal Allan moved and John Gallant seconded that SCSI-2 Common Access Method Transport and SCSI Interface Module (X3T9.2/90-186 Rev 2.5) be forwarded to X3T9 for further processing. Mr. Steve Anderson, who cast the no vote, stated the Conner Peripherals' position is that it will build ATA drives but does not support the ATA standard, due to master slave incompatibilities with the millions of drives already in the field. The company does not feel that ATA is a good standard, however they will implement it. 10.3 Project proposal for Diagnostic Command Set (91-74) [Allan] Bill Spence moved and Doug Pickford seconded that 91-74 be forwarded to X3T9 for further processing. The motion, which required 2/3rds of those voting and a majority of the total membership, failed 16-12-0-31. 10.4 Project proposal for ATA Extensions (91-104R1) [Allan] Dal Allan elucidated on the nature of this project proposal. It is based on the PCMCIA mechanical and electrical features but with an ATA interface mapped onto it. Dal Allan moved and Jim McGrath seconded that X3T9.2/91-104R1 be forwarded to X3T9 for further processing. The motion passed 31- 3-0-25. The organizations voting no were Apple Computer, Conner Peripherals, and IBM. Their representatives were invited to state their reasons for voting no, but declined the opportunity. 10.5 Project proposal for Memory Model Interface (91-108) [Allan] Per Gene Milligan's suggestion, the name was changed to Directly- Addressable Device Interface (DADI). During the discussion, several other minor editorial changes were made to the project proposal. Dal Allan moved and Jim McGrath seconded that 91-108R1 be forwarded to X3T9 for further processing. The motion passed 36-0-0-23. 10.6 Project proposal for Flat File Command Set (91-109) [Allan] Gary Stephens questioned the need for this command set proposal when there exists a project proposal for the SCSI-3 command set. John Gallant requested a unique device type, instead of layered on an existing device type. Paul Nitza preferred an object oriented command set; not be limited to file operations. Bill Galloway noted that disk references throughout the proposal should be changed to device. Since quick resolution of these issues was not forthcoming, the project proposal was assigned to the September working group meeting for further consideration. 10.7 Medium Changer functions to improve interoperation (91-72) [Therrien] David Therrien was not present at the meeting. John Lohmeyer reported that he had received a letter (91-121) from Bart Raudebaugh recommending that this issue not be addressed without further discussion via fax/phone/email. Bill Galloway said he would work with Bart Raudebaugh and David Therrien in trying to resolve the issues. 10.8 LUNTAR, LUNTRN Bits, and Target Routine Functions (91-76) [Dougherty] Peter Dougherty wanted to extend target routines to WRITE BUFFER and SEND/RECEIVE DIAGNOSTIC commands on bridge controllers. John Lohmeyer presented a foil of the November 1987 working group minutes detailing why SCSI-2 limited target routines to just INQUIRY and REQUEST SENSE commands. There was general agreement that the SCSI-3 Command Set document should be extended. Peter agreed to prepare a proposal for SCSI-3. 10.9 MEDIUM SCAN Command, SCSI-2, Chapter 15 (91-90) [Boulay] Gary Stephens moved and Larry Lamers seconded a motion to incorporate X3T9.2/91-90 in SCSI-2. The motion passed 30-0. 10.10 CAM Proposals from Extended Systems (91-94 -- -97) [Huntsman] Most of these items were handled in the CAM Rev 2.5 document. Bob Huntsman thanked the committee for addressing his proposals. 10.11 Tagged Queuing Model (91-98) [Penokie] A working group meeting was held on this topic Monday evening. George Penokie reported on the meeting. The group had agreed to focus efforts on developing a model for SCSI-3, at the interface level, and not to define internal requirements of devices. The queuing terminology still needs refinement to eliminate confusion and extended discussions on variations of meanings. The next meeting on this topic is Monday, September 16, 1991 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in St. Paul, MN. 10.12 Format Device Log Page (91-106R1) [Pickford] Doug presented his rev 1 document. The format device log page does more than just count events, it also logs power-on time since the last format. There are five parameters defined for this page. Donna Pope raised a question on the effect of the parameters when dealing with optical media. Doug will incorporate several suggested changes and submit a revised document for the next mailing. 10.13 Error in Implementors Note 1) in 6.9 of SCSI-2 (91-107) [Lohmeyer] Larry Lamers moved and John Lohmeyer seconded that the first solution proposed in 91-107 be accepted, i.e., to delete the third sentence in implementors note 1) in section 6.9 of the SCSI-2 document. The motion passed 30-0. A discussion on paragraph six of this section ensued. The result is a correction to the language. Larry Lamers will change "may either" to "shall either". 10.14 Should SCSI-3 SPI Require SCSI Cables to be fully populated? [Lamers] Larry Lamers requested that this topic be remanded to the working group meeting. 10.15 Review of new documents Sequential Access Density Codes (91-125,-102) [Pisciotta] Chris Pisciotta presented a request for a new Sequential Access Density code for a device that is currently in production using a vendor unique code. Chris Pisciotta moved and Bob Snively seconded that 91-125R1 be incorporated in SCSI-2. The motion passed 21-0. Bill Spence moved and George Hahn seconded that 91-102R1 be incorporated in SCSI-2. The motion passed 26-0. Comparison of SE Cable/Terminator Options (91-126) [Spence] Bill Spence presented his paper on terminator options for single-ended cables. He cited six terminator options and made five suggestions for SCSI-3. Active Negation Drivers & Alt-2 Termination (91-130) [Chan] Kurt Chan presented his paper on potential problems with Alt-2 termination when using active negation drivers. Kurt promised an update for the next mailing. The conclusion was that protocol chips using active negation drivers should limit the supplied current when above 3.0 volts The SCSI-3 SPI document should provide details. Novell Paper on ATA issues (91-101) [Richins] John Lohmeyer mentioned that this paper had been addressed by the July working group and that changes were made to ATA Rev 2.5 to provide better configuration data. See 91-110 for details. Dealing with multi-initiator issues (91-118) [Hahn] Copies of George Hahn's document were not available at the plenary meeting. The document mentions a target device that only has one synchronous agreement. The device assumes that negotiation with one initiator would set synchronous agreement for all initiators. The SCSI-2 document is not explicitly clear on this issue. John Lohmeyer read some wording that he had developed to address this issue. The topic was remanded to the working group. 10.16 Agenda for the Minneapolis Working Group The following draft agenda was generated for the September SCSI Working Group Meeting in St. Paul, MN: 1.
