Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday June 17, 1991. He thanked Jim Hamstra of StanaTek for hosting the meeting in a delightful location. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the X3T9.2 membership list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the following addition: 10.13 SCSI Profiles [Gardner] 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two out of three consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the Chair of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The Chair indicated that since the last meeting Summus Computer Systems had joined the committee with Bill Galloway the principal member. The following organizations joined the committee at the meeting: Document Imaging Systems Corp. and Woven Electronics. Burndy Corp. was reinstated at the meeting. With the four additions minus the four terminations for nonattendance, the X3T9.2 voting membership remains at 61 organizations. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees at the meeting. Enclosure (2) is the X3T9.2 membership changes since the last minutes and enclosure (3) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The Chair said he had sent jeopardy letters to 20 people from 9 organizations: Astro Cable, Ciprico, DPT, Eastman Kodak, Maxoptix, Montrose Products, Standard Microsystems, Storage Technology, and UNISYS. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended this meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. Members were present from each of the organizations except: Astro Cable, DPT, Montrose Products, and Standard Microsystems. The members from the organizations not represented were changed to observer status. 4. Approval of Minutes - April Meeting St. Petersburg Beach, FL (91-58R1) The minutes were approved as written. 5. Document Distribution John Lohmeyer said that he had sent the mailing to CBEMA May 8 before the working group meetings so documents received in Harrisburg would be distributed in the July mailing. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina Gray at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by noon on July 8, 1991. He noted that the July mailing will not contain the results of the July working group meetings. These minutes will be available on the SCSI BBS (316-636-8700) and will be distributed to the SCSI Reflector E-mail list. To be added to the SCSI Reflector, send an electronic message to: scsiadm@WichitaKS.NCR.COM. The following new or revised documents were distributed and/or discussed at the meeting: Document Doc Date Author Description of Document ------------- -------- --------------- --------------------------------------- X3T9.2/91-14 6/4/91 G. Liaison Reports 6.1 ISO [Milligan] Gene Milligan stated that he was concerned that the ISO/IEC SC 25/WG 4 meeting scheduled for late September might have to be re-scheduled due to an overlap with the JTC-1 meeting. [Chair's note: On Wednesday, Gene was informed that the meeting was still planned for the original dates.] 6.2 IT8 [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer said that he had been receiving meeting notices, agendas, and minutes of IT8 meetings. The notices and agendas for the meetings the week of June 11 had arrived after the May X3T9.2 mailing was distributed. The IT8 minutes are fairly large, so John did not plan to re-distributed these either. He said he would forward the minutes to the chair of SCSI-3 Scanner Working Group when a chair is appointed. 6.3 Fiber Channel [Allan] Dal Allan reported that the last working group had settled all the show- stoppers that stood in the way of a motion to forward FC-PH during the June X3T9.3 plenary meeting. FC-PH defines the mechanical, optical, and electrical characteristics for both optical and coaxial transmission systems, the encoding/decoding scheme for serial transfer, and the protocol to manage transfers. John Lohmeyer drew the attention of the members to agenda item 10.6, and noted that there were some issues over whether SCSI should manage its packetized protocol at the frame level or rely on the Fiber Channel protocol services. NOTE: X3T9.3 voted to forward FC-PH; The next step is a 30-day letter ballot conducted by X3T9. 6.4 Small Form Factor Industry Group [Allan] Dal Allan reported that the only issue at the last working group had been connector issues related to the height of the centerline of the connector above the outside of the form factor. The goal of 2.4mm was achieved and new drawings are available in the latest SFF Committee mailing. One potential voting issue arose over the mating interface. The receptacle can accept a board-edge connector with 5mm of overhang, but the connector plug requires 10mm to mate. This assumes that 5mm of the connector plug would be hogged out of the HDA. There is a strong requirement that the HDA body be the same dimensions for all suppliers because of the method of mounting into laptops. This led to a conflict between those who wanted to retain the 5mm of overhang and those who did not want to hog out the HDA but have 10mm of overhang so that a connector plug could be mounted outside the HDA. 6.5 IEEE Disk Attachment Study Group [McGrath] Jim McGrath reported that the IEEE Disk Attach Study Group has a plan to develop the interface by leveraging off the existing work done by the PCMCIA. Jim has met with PCMCIA, which has agreed in concept to support 1.8-inch disk drives. This is not a commitment to develop an interface; but agreement to consider a proposal. Tom Hanan of Western Digital and Jim are spearheading the effort to develop a proposal and to co-operate with PCMICA. The first step is to define an alternative interface which is register based for AT Attachment compatibility and uses the PCMCIA electrical and mechanical interface. This would be an addendum or require changes to the ATA draft standard. The next step is to extend the PCMCIA physical interface to extend functionality and support a larger capacity than the 64 MB limitation of the present 68-pin definition. This would be achieved by adding pins. The long-term objective is to achieve software layer compatibility with PCMCIA, and there is some concern over how this can be achieved at the same time as providing P1212 compatibility because all the functional features of P1212 are not supported in PCMCIA. The next meeting of PCMCIA is in Seattle, on Monday and Tuesday June 24 and 25, 1991. Dal Allan had sent a letter to the IEEE Standards Committee requesting that a decision on making the Disk Attach an IEEE project be delayed. Both PCMCIA and X3T9.2 have current activities in this area and IEEE does not. The letter was sent as a "concerned citizen," not under the official persona of an X3T9.2 officer. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. Gene Milligan will draft a letter to the appropriate international organization requesting that ISO 8482 be revised to resolve the discrepancies between it and EIA RS-485. Complete. Gene had determined that ISO 8482 is not really an international equivalent of RS-485 as the committee had previously assumed. Instead of requesting changes to ISO 8482, Gene had contacted CCITT had written a letter that they create an international version of RS-485. 2. Gary Stephens will write a response to the David Moore letter (91-43) on sequential-access issues. Carry over. 3. Larry Lamers will correct the 8-mm sequential-access density code in SCSI-2. Complete. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 AT Attachment Status (ATA) Dal Allan reported that he had prepared Rev 2.4 including several Set Features command additions, an alternative usage for pin 28 to do implicit addressing, and the requests from Pat Manley of Syquest to add support of removable devices. The latter included five new commands which had not been proposed at the working group. George questioned why these had been included in Rev 2.4 without the approval of the committee. It was a combination of haste to update all the changes after returning from Europe and trying to get everything possible into Rev 2.4 so that it could be distributed in the mailing, as Dal hopes there can be a forwarding motion in August. There was a discussion on the ATA modifications to support removable media with considerable debate on media change reporting and its relation to drive ready bit. Rather than try to complete the review of all the changes, it was suggested that they be tentatively accepted and that the July working group review the ATA document. Patrick Manley agreed to supply a copy to all those who express an interest in the ATA agenda item as the mailing will not be available prior to the working group meeting. Gene Milligan moved and Bill Medlinski seconded that ATA Rev 2.4 be accepted as the working draft document. The motion passed 12 yes and 2 no. 8.2 ESDI [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer reported that ESDI (X3.170A) had passed its one-month public review period on the editorial changes to BSR X3.170 without any comments. Lynn Barra has forwarded the draft proposed standard to the ANSI Board of Standards Review. It is expected that BSR will approved this document within a few weeks and that ESDI will finally be published shortly thereafter. ANSI has treated the editorial changes as an addendum to X3.170, even though they will be incorporated in the text of the standard. 8.3 SCSI Common Access Method (CAM) Dal Allan reported that Rev 2.4 includes the comments from the working group plus a new appendix on Target operation from Mike Roche of NCR Canada and an updated C code listing of the CAM Control Blocks from John Gallant of Digital Equipment. Dal hopes to make a call for forwarding at the August meeting. John Lohmeyer stated that he had received a fax (91-85) from Bob Huntsman of Extended Systems requesting that CAM not be forwarded because of a statement saying that the CAM interface for Novell is defined by Novell. Dave O'Shea checked the section referred to and felt this concern had already been addressed. 8.4 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/91-70) John Lohmeyer briefly reviewed the minutes of the last working group meeting. Larry Lamers, who had not attended the working group meeting, raised an objection to freedoms granted to the editor that are not within the authority of a working group. He also objected to the recommended change to remove the ordering requirement across initiators for the ORDERED QUEUE TAG in paragraph 6 of 6.8.2. He stated that the necessary changes to permit one command queue per initiator go far beyond just this one change. If the committee wants to pursue a more sophisticated queuing model, it should be part of the SCSI-3 project. After discussion of how extensive the change would be and which model is actually being implemented, the committee agreed to not change the paragraph. As a result of the above decision, the phrase "..for that initiator." will be deleted from 7.3.3.1. Jim McGrath raised the issue of using RESERVE/RELEASE with ORDERED QUEUE tags. This subject had been discussed at the working group and no resolution was reached. The plenary discussion turned up the fact that it was possible to corrupt file systems if an initiator did not stop issuing tagged commands until receiving status on the tagged RESERVE command. An implementors note will be added to 6.8.2 cautioning implementors of initiators of this potential issue. 8.5 SCSI-2 Status John Lohmeyer reported that the X3 letter ballot to withdraw SCSI-2 prior to publication passed unanimously. Larry Lamers had prepared Rev 10d which was included in the May mailing and Larry later prepared Rev 10e to correct several printing problems. Rev 10e had been sent to Global Engineering Documents, but will not be distributed in a committee mailing. One omission was pointed out to Larry: In section 8.3.3.5 both the starting and ending boundary descriptions should include the statement about ignoring this field on MODE SELECT commands. The last sentence of paragraph 7 should also be included in paragraph 8. Larry cautioned the committee members that there are likely to be other errors as well. He had encountered considerable problems in converting the document from WordStar (tm) to Word Perfect (tm). He encouraged committee members to read the document carefully. 8.6 SCSI-3 Scanner Working Group (X3T9.2/91-59) The first SCSI-3 Scanner Working Group meeting was held in St. Petersburg Beach with 8 people present. Two goals were established: 1) Enhance the current SCSI-2 Scanner Command Set to permit generic driver software to be written. 2) Develop a new command set for pixel-oriented graphics devices to support such devices as scanners, laser printers, fax machines, and digital copiers. The next meeting of the Scanner Working Group was scheduled for Wednesday August 21, 1991 in Boulder, Colorado from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in conjunction with the X3T9 meetings. 8.7 SCSI-3 Status The first drafts of two SCSI-3 documents were in the last mailing: a short form of SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol and SCSI-3 Physical Interface. Kurt Chan brought copies of a revised SPI document and plans to have the SCSI-3 Interlocked Protocol document available for the July mailing. John Lohmeyer reported that all SCSI-3 project proposals have been accepted by X3 except for a single no vote on SPP from EDS. 8.7.1 Response to EDS no vote John presented a draft response to the EDS no vote that he drafted for Del Shoemaker's signature. The draft response rejects the suggestion that the SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol project be assigned to X3S3, but accepted the suggestion that a close liaison be established. Several changes were made and the revised letter was designated 91-84 Rev 1. Gene Milligan moved and Dal Allan seconded that the gist of 91-84 Rev 1 be sent to X3T9 to develop an appropriate response to EDS. The motion passed unanimously. 9. Old Business 9.1 Diagnostic Command Set (90-103R3, 91-74) [Pickford, Allan] Dal Allan had written a project proposal for a Technical Report on a Diagnostic Command Set for magnetic disk drives. Copies of a pre- revision 0 version were available at the meeting. The project proposal will be included in the July mailing for forwarding at the August meeting. Doug Pickford said he planned to remove the Format Device Log Page portion of his 90-103 proposal and submit it for consideration in SCSI-3. 9.2 Control of SCSI Device Power (91-014R4) [Penokie] Revision 4 of George's proposal contains the following changes: 1) In an effort to maintain consistency with ATA, the shutdown timer option has been deleted; 2) Stopping the spindle causes an implied synchronization of the cache. Further input from the committee added a Valid Bit for the power control bits. This resulted in a long discussion of sleeping and power down. A requirement that all LUN's be put to sleep before the target is put to sleep was also added. George said he would revise his proposal for the July working group meeting. 9.3 Alternate SE Termination Method (91-37, -38) [Trung Le] Kurt Chan had researched IBM's research on the subject which is quite extensive. A list of IBM papers will be included in a document Kurt plans to write for the next mailing. Kurt listed the theoretical advantages of nonlinear termination: * no exact match on impedance needed * clamped over/under shoot * reduced ringing * termination at stubs is possible * no DC current is required Kurt compared the Methode "SLIM" terminator with the IBM Forced Perfect terminator. Kurt had made DC measurements on open circuit, short circuit, and output current. There are problems with some drivers, because SCSI-2 does not limit output high current. It is possible to have high current spikes if drivers exceed the clamping voltage. Kurt noted that an initial test of FPT showed that it worked significantly better than passive termination and a little better than regulated termination when using open collector drivers. Kurt did not yet have an explanation for his observations and could not endorse the circuit until he understood it better. Active negation drivers were less sensitive to the termination scheme. One should avoid FPT and SLIM if large currents could result from active negation drivers. 9.4 SCSI Identifier Symbols (91-49R1,-63,-73) [Lohmeyer, Medlinski, Allan] This was a topic that everyone could get into. John Lohmeyer had started the mess at the April meeting and since that time Bill Medlinski and Dal Allan had joined the fray with proposals for variations on the idea. Bill wanted to add symbols for the driver circuits while Dal favored circles and squares. John's proposal had only used text. Ideas flowed from the committee members including using the SCSI icon for single-ended and some variant of the icon for differential. John barely got the lid back on Pandora's box by assigning the issue to the July working group. 9.5 Various SCSI Interpretation Questions (91-53) [Hagerman] This item was covered in the May working group minutes (91-70). One answer on queuing was reversed at this meeting (see item 8.4). 10. New Business 10.1 Proposal to add 60/68-pin ribbon connector to standard (91-61) [Lazar] {Tuesday a.m.} Michael Lazar gave a presentation (91-89) on industry standardization of 60- and 68-position connectors. This proposed connector is used on the IBM PS/2 (tm) and is manufactured by Burndy. Heinz Piorunneck moved and George Penokie seconded a motion to add the 60 and 68 position 1.27 (0.50) pitch, ribbon style contact connector to the SCSI-2 and/or SCSI-3 standard as an alternative. Gene Milligan moved and Bill Medlinski seconded to amend the motion to request EIA to develop standard for a ribbon-contact connectors and to change the venue to the Small Form Factor committee. After some discussion, Gene Milligan withdrew the proposed amendment. Gene Milligan moved and Dal Allan seconded to amend the motion to read "...that X3T9.2 add a 68 position high-density ribbon style connector to the SCSI-3 Parallel Interface working document as an alternative." The amendment passed 19 yes and 17 no. A role call vote on the main motion was requested with the following results: Organization Name Yes No Abs NP 3M Company Mr. Robert C. Herron 1 AMP, Inc. The motion failed 10 yes, 24 no, and 1 abstain. 10.2 Recommended change to SCSI-2 (91-60) [Luttig] John Lohmeyer presented the salient points on the response to selection following reset discussion held at the working group. See item 14 in 91- 70. 10.3 Outbound disconnect and Disconnect Time Limit (91-62) [Wicklund] In 91-62, Tom Wicklund points out a potential source of confusion concerning disconnect timing. The May working group developed a slight change to Tom's recommended solution and recommended that it be incorporated into SCSI-2: "... After releasing the BSY signal, the target shall not participate in another ARBITRATION phase for at least a disconnection delay or the time specified in the disconnect time limit mode parameter (see 7.3.3.2), whichever is greater." John Lohmeyer moved and Bill Medlinski seconded that the wording be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-2. The motion passed 14 yes and 1 no. 10.4 Motion to Reaffirm, Revise, or Withdraw SCSI-1 (ANSI X3.131-1986) John explained that since SCSI is five years old it must be reaffirmed, revised, or withdrawn or else ANSI will withdraw it administratively. Since SCSI-2 will not be ready to forward again for several months, he advised reaffirming SCSI-1. Larry Lamers moved and John Lohmeyer seconded that X3.131-1986, Small Computer System Interface, be reaffirmed as an American National standard. The working group recommended a QUEUE FULL status response to a tagged command being received if a contingent allegiance exists. Another long discussion ensued and several issues and possible solutions to queuing questions were discussed. John Lohmeyer agreed to develop a proposal on handling contingent allegiance conditions during tagged I/O processes for the July working group. 10.6 SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol: encapsulate vs. native Fiber Channel Two approaches exist to constructing the packets: encapsulation (per Gary Stephens' SPP document) or native Fiber Channel (per Roger Cummings' FC-4 paradigm document). Gary's solution does not change the SPP document to work with any interface capable of delivering packets. Roger's approach uses a common method of delivering IPI, SCSI, HIPPI, and other protocols over Fiber Channel. Dal argued that Gary's approach would result in lower performance because it would not use the Fiber Channel services efficiently. John Lohmeyer suggested that a compromise position is to structure the SPP document to permit both methods of operation. This issue needs more thought and was deferred to the July working group. 10.7 Fast Single-ended SCSI (91-64) [Steele] David Steele reviewed his proposal. He had not received much reaction since the working group meeting. Several reactions were available at the meeting, however. Jim McGrath (Quantum) pointed out that the "glitch eater" circuit could be expensive to implement. Typically such fast circuits are implemented with gate delays which introduces a four-to-one timing tolerance over process variations. Silicon costs are driver up because such timings are difficult to test. Jim asserted that no one wants to pay extra for fast SCSI. George Penokie objected to the statement saying he would gladly pay extra if it was the difference between unreliable and reliable operation. David Steele said that simple, inexpensive glitch-eater circuits are feasible. Vit Novak questioned the proposed three-meter length restriction for fast single-ended SCSI. The response was that fast single-ended SCSI could work beyond three meters, but there are configurations that will fail at six meters. John Lohmeyer said he would rather be conservative in the SCSI-3 standard; if people push beyond the standard's limits they might work or they might not. 10.8 Floptical (tm) issues in SCSI-3 (91-88) [Wilhelm] David O'Shea spoke for Al Wilhelm on the proposal which had been revised since the working group meeting. The idea is to handle removable media direct-access devices differently from fixed-media devices so that initiators while not corrupt file structures. In particular, there needs to be a consistent method of creating head/cylinder/sector numbers so that DOS will work in a consistent manner. The topic was remanded to the July working group, which Al plans to attend. 10.9 Review of new documents X3T9.2/91-87, F. Podio, Workshop on error rates and error distributions in optical disks Bill Burr announced an NIST workshop to develop standardized ways of reporting error rates on optical media for the US Government. The purpose is to monitor the media. The meeting will be on August 5, 1991 in conjunction with X3B11 meeting. Those interested should notify Fernando Podio of NIST of their intention to attend the meeting. Fast Single Ended Specification (91-64) [Steele] 9. SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol (SPP) 10. Removable Media Support for SCSI-3 (91-88) [Wilhelm] 11. SCSI Device Identifier (91-49R1, -63, -73) [Lohmeyer, Medlinski, Allan] 12. Format Device Log Page [Pickford] 13. SCSI Device Profiles [Gardner] 10.11 Patent issue concerning Power Control (91-77) [Allan] A Prairie Tek patent (4933785) on 2.5-inch drive technology includes a claim (45) on power control that may relate to the AT Attachment draft standard. Dal Allan has sent a letter to Prairie Tek requesting that they comply with the ANSI patent policy. 10.12 Direct Access Removable Media ASCQ's (91-71) [Penokie, of course] George Penokie moved and Bill Medlinski seconded that 91-071R1 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion passed 16 yes and 1 no. 10.13 SCSI Profiles [Gardner] Ed Gardner suggested that the committee consider preparing standard profiles for SCSI devices for specific market segments and/or operating environments. Gene Milligan stated that the word "profile" has a particular meaning and should probably be avoided. Most people felt that the activity should be part of one or more of the SCSI-3 projects. The topic was placed on the agenda for the July working group meeting. 11. Review of Action Items 1. Gary Stephens will write a response to the David Moore letter (91-43) on sequential-access issues. 2. John Lohmeyer will take the draft response to the EDS no vote to X3T9 for their action. 3. John Lohmeyer will develop a proposal on handling contingent allegiance conditions during tagged queuing. 5. Larry Lamers will include the clarification from 91-070 item 15 in SCSI-2. 6. Jim Mcgrath will give a presentation on PCMCIA Monday evening August 19, 1991. 7. John Lohmeyer will request that X3T9 reaffirm X3.131-1986, Small Computer System Interface, as an American National Standard. 12.
