Date: April 25, 1991 To: X3T9.2 Membership From: John B. Lohmeyer, X3T9.2 Chairman Subject: SCSI-3 Scanner Working Group Meeting -- April 24, 1991 John Lohmeyer called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Wednesday April 25, 1991. He thanked Chuck Brill of AMP for hosting the meeting in St. Petersburg Beach, FL. This was the first SCSI-3 working group meeting and the principal reason for meeting was to determine what needs to be done in SCSI-3 regarding the Scanner Command Set. Prichard Fax re IT8/WG14 Scanner Activities Results of meeting John started the meeting by presenting a brief overview of the structure of the standards development organizations that prepare ANSI standards. He showed how X3T9.2 and IT8/TSC/WG14 relate. The group next focused on setting goals for the activity. The principal goal is to enhance the SCSI-2 scanner command set so that products can be developed to support generic driver software. All current scanner products employ various vendor-specific features and functions to work around deficiencies in the SCSI-2 scanner command set. In particular, it is not possible for driver software to "discover" the device capabilities strictly through the interface. This activity would also add support for color scanners. The time frame for developing a stable draft document is 3 to 6 months. A second goal of the group is to define a generic pixel-oriented graphics command set that would support devices such as scanners, laser printers, fax machines and digital copiers. The idea is to establish a standard format for images (color or monochrome) so that SCSI devices can use generic drivers to process images. The time frame for a stable draft document is 1 to 3 years. The first goal will probably include creating a device capabilities page and enhancing or replacing the GET WINDOWS and SET WINDOWS commands. The second goal can only be met with the help of other people who know more about laser printers and fax machines. The group also needs input from people who build film scanners and still video products. Several Action Items were accepted: 1. Gavin Villapiano will call Robert Prichard, IT8/TSC/WG14 Chair, concerning liaison activities. 2. Gavin Villapiano and George Tharakan will generate the first draft of the SCSI-3 Scanner Command Set for the July X3T9.2 mailing. 3. Gavin Villapiano will draft a conceptual model of the Graphics Command Set for the July X3T9.2 mailing. 4. George Tharakan will contact other scanner vendors and invite them to participate. 5. John Lohmeyer will chair the next SCSI-3 Scanner Working Group meeting. The next meeting of the Scanner Working Group was scheduled for Wednesday August 21, 1991 in Boulder, Colorado from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in conjunction with the X3T9 meetings.
