Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday April 22, 1991. He thanked Chuck Brill of AMP for hosting the meeting in a pleasant location. He remarked the the nearby beach would provide an incentive to keep the meeting on track. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the X3T9.2 membership list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the following additions: 9.6 ISO 8482 vs. RS-485 issues (91-21) [Murdock, Milligan] 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two out of three consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the Chair of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The Chair indicated that since the last meeting, the following membership changes had occurred: Advanced Vision Research has joined the committee with George Tharakan as the principal member; Norm Harris has replaced Gary Robinson has the Digital Equipment principal member; Mike Randall has replaced Dan Moczarny as the Mitsubishi principal; Olivetti has dropped its voting membership, but remains an observer of the committee; the JPM Company has joined the committee with Robert Langton the principal member and Brian Fox the alternate; and Summus Computer Systems has joined the committee with Bill Galloway as the principal member. In addition to these changes, there were literally hundreds of additions and deletions (mostly observers) to the chair's attendance database to synchronize with the CBEMA database. With the additions of Advanced Vision Research, The JPM Company, and Summus Computer Systems at the meeting, and minus the termination of Olivetti, the X3T9.2 voting membership is now at 61 up from 59 organizations at the last meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees at the meeting. Enclosure (2) is the X3T9.2 membership changes since the last minutes and enclosure (3) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. On Tuesday morning, John Lohmeyer read a facsimile received from Bill Spence overnight. Bill noted that he would be unable to continue participating in the committee meetings due travel budget restrictions imposed by Texas Instruments. Bill thanked the membership for their support and camaraderie over the years. John said that he hoped T.I.'s budget problems were temporary as Bill has been a significant contributor to T9.2's work. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The Chair said he had sent jeopardy letters to 28 people from 11 organizations: Ancot, Ciprico, Conner Peripherals, Control Data, Data General, Hirose Electric, Iomega, NEC, Olivetti, Ricoh, and Tandem Computer. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended the April plenary meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. As previously stated, Olivetti had dropped their voting membership. Members were present from all of the other organizations, so no other organizations dropped. 4. Approval of Minutes - February Meeting Austin, TX (X3T9.2/91-26) The minutes were approved as written. 5. Document Distribution The Chair noted that the mailing was distributed early this time. As a consequence of the later working group meeting schedule, the mailing was assembled prior to these meetings. The minutes of the March working group meetings plus the new documents received there will be in the May mailing. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina Gray at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by noon on May 6, 1991. He noted that the May mailing will not contain the results of the May working group meetings. These minutes will be available on the SCSI BBS (316-636-8700) and will be distributed to the SCSI Reflector E-mail list. To be added to the SCSI Reflector, send an electronic message to: scsiadm@WichitaKS.NCR.COM. The following new or revised documents were distributed and/or discussed at the meeting: Document Doc Date Author Description of Document ------------- -------- --------------- --------------------------------------- X3T9.2/91-13 4/22/91 G. Liaison Reports 6.1 ISO [Milligan] Gene Milligan, the X3T9 International Representative, (perhaps remembering the beach incentive plan) gave an unusually brief report at the meeting: " The SC 25/WG 4 Secretariat has issued N595 which is the draft report of January WG 4 meeting, held in Las Vegas. " 6.2 IT8 [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer said he had received a Fax letter (91-50) from Robert Prichard, Chair of IT8/TSC/WG14, requesting that his group be informed of the activities of the SCSI-3 Scanner Working Group activities. His group is defining a Color Electronic Prepress Scanner Device for SCSI. John brought a few copies of the Fax for the SCSI-3 Scanner Working Group which was meeting on Wednesday, April 24. No one from IT8 expected to be able to attend the working group meeting on Wednesday. Mr. Prichard invited interested people from our group to attend their meeting on June 11-12 in Las Vegas. John noted that William K. Smythe, Secretary of IT8, is already a Liaison member of X3T9.2, so full information regarding the SCSI-3 Scanner Working Group should be available to IT8. 6.3 Fiber Channel [Allan] Dal Allan reported. Due to a problem with the overnight air carrier, the X3T9.3 mailing did not make it from Roger Cummings to CBEMA. By the time the problem was noticed, the mailing was too late for the meeting. That mailing will contain the new Fiber Channel Physical Layer document. The Fiber Channel working group is now moving into phase two. Connectors will be considered and other components will be selected. Bruce Johnson of Seagate will present a low-cost version of Fiber Channel to both X3T9.2 and X3T9.3 later in the meeting. 6.4 Small Form Factor Industry Group [Allan] The bulk of the March meeting was associated with connectors; How much height can be given to connector vs. the height required for the head- disk-assembly (HDA). A thin printed-wiring board (PCB) of 0.8 mm was selected so edge connectors could be used. There remains an issue with vertical insertion using such a thin PCB because of the potential of damaging the PCB. The next item to be addressed by the SFF group is smaller drives (1.3- inch). These are drives are so small that chip mounting techniques may be applicable. It has been suggested that the HDA be directly mounted to the PCB. Pins on both ends of the drive would be used both for mounting and interconnection. 6.5 IEEE Disk Attachment Study Group [McGrath] The first official meeting was held in Sunnyvale. The group is chartered by the IEEE. Martin Freeman of Philips Magnetics is chairing the group. Participants are being drawn from the IEEE bus interface people and the disk interface people. The group developed a meeting schedule tied to the SFF meetings and the X3T9.2 plenary meeting. The Disk Attach Study Group will meet immediately after the SFF meeting during working group months and it will meet on Wednesday in Silicon Valley after the X3T9.2 meeting. Several members of X3T9.2 could not attend the April meeting because of conflicts with other meetings, particularly Fiber Channel. Jim McGrath asked for input on what would be a better meeting schedule. The last meetings minutes were not mailed out and meeting notices for the Wednesday meeting were FAXed late last Friday. Dal noted the the IEEE meeting notices are usually sent via Internet because most of the IEEE people have Internet electronic mail boxes. The committee plans to develop interfaces for 1.8-inch and smaller disk drives. Neither ATA nor SCSI will be used electrically or logically. There groups charter statement was provided for the X3T9.2 mailing (see 91-55). The group expects to take six months for draft document and two years for standard. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. Gene Milligan will draft a letter to the appropriate international organization requesting that ISO 8482 be revised to resolve the discrepancies between it and EIA RS-485. Carry over--see item 9.6. 2. Gene Milligan and Jim McGrath (Molex) will draft a letter to the P5 committee of EIA and the 48B committee of IEC stating the power pin diameter problem and recommending a solution. Complete--see 91-47. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 ESDI [Allan] John stated that he did not know the results of the one-month public review on ESDI, but expected no comments. ESDI should be published shortly. 8.2 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/91-41) John Lohmeyer gave a brief report. See the minutes of the working group (document 91-41) for details. 8.3 SCSI Common Access Method (CAM) Item 8.3.1 covers the only outstanding issue and will be addressed Tuesday afternoon of the May 14, 1991 at the SCSI working group meeting. Dal still plans to have a forwarding motion at the June plenary meeting. 8.3.1 Proposed Changes and Additions for CAM (91-46) [Gallant] John Gallant recently submitted 91-46 requesting some changes and additions to the CAM document. Dal also noted that a change is needed to LADDR to accommodate the Ultrix implementation. This issue is being worked on with Microsoft. 8.4 Low Power Differential Working Group This meeting had such a dismal turnout that the few people who were present decided to call the meeting off. Assuming this reflects a lack of interest, the low-power differential topic will be dropped until and unless a significant new proposal is received. 8.5 SCSI-2 Status There was a preview of some sections of 10d at SCSI-3 editors' meeting. Rev. 10d is on track for the May mailing. This version will include the committee's requested changes and a few of the ANSI Editor's changes. The remaining ANSI comments will be addressed in Rev. 10e. 8.6 AT Attachment Status (ATA) Tom Hanan (Western Digital) gave a brief description of a proposed extension to ATA. He asked those interested to met with him after the plenary meeting recessed at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. This draft document is also scheduled to be forwarded at the June plenary meeting. 8.7 SCSI-3 Status An editors meeting was held in Wichita April 10-12, 1991. Architectural issues and work on glossary were main items addressed. An SPI document will be in the May mailing. There is still a critical shortage of editors for the SCSI-3 documents. The other documents are on hold pending availability of volunteer editors. 8.8 Data Compression/Encryption Working Group (91-42) John Lohmeyer gave a brief report; see document 91-042 for details. A revised proposal (see 90-119R3) was mailed to all members. Kurt Chan presented the salient points. The proposal would create a new mode page in SCSI-3 to provide a control structure for data compression on sequential-access devices. X3B5 has requested that an international registration authority be established to assign codes for the compression algorithms. Kurt Chan moved and Bob Simpson seconded that part 3 of X3T9.2/90-119 Rev. 3 be accepted for inclusion in the accepted for the SCSI-3 Command Set document. The motion passed: 28 Yes, 0 No. 9. Old Business 9.1 Concurrent execution of more than one I/O Process (90-169, 90-173, 91- 34R1) [Penokie, Peper] John gave a brief report on what was a lengthy discussion at the working group. Changes made in Rev. 10d clarify the issue are summarized in document 91-34R1. Gerry Houlder commented on item 9 of 91-34R1. He was asked to read the 10d document in context to verify whether he still had an issue. 9.2 SCSI Message cleanup (91-008R1) [Stephens] The ABORT TAG message has some wording added to clarify its function when used with untagged queuing. See item 1 of document 91-041 for details. In SCSI-3, the name of this message may be changed to ABORT I/O PROCESS to further clarify that it may be used to abort untagged I/O processes. 9.3 Diagnostic Command Set (90-103R2, 91-48) [Pickford, Milligan] Doug Pickford wants to vote on accepting the DCS document at the June plenary meeting. A revision 3 of the document incorporating all comments will be in the May mailing. 9.4 MODE SELECT defaults (91-019, -51) [Hanmann, Galloway] Bill Galloway's proposal led to a lengthy discussion about the problems of checking mode parameters. John prepared a set of six points of which summarized the group's consensus: 1. A target may change a non-changeable parameter as a side effect of changes to changeable parameters. There may be side effects across pages. 2. An initiator is expected to set the non-changeable parameters to their most recent current values, even if it knows the non- changeable parameter will change. 3. A target shall validate the non-changeable parameters in a MODE SELECT command against their current values prior to the command, not against their new values. 4. Following a MODE SELECT command, the current values may be different from the values contained in the MODE SELECT command if rounding has occurred or a side effect has occurred. 5. If the current values calculated by the target affect the initiator's operation, initiator should issue a MODE SENSE command after each MODE SELECT command. 6. If ILLEGAL REQUEST sense key is reported for the MODE SELECT command, no parameters shall be changed. Monday evening, Larry and John incorporated changes in Rev 10d to reflect these points of consensus. John requested that people review these changes carefully. 9.5 Control of SCSI Device Power (91-014R2) [Penokie] George Penokie reviewed the changes to his proposal. Bob Snively grilled George on permutations of the options. As a result, George plans to revise the proposal one more time. 9.6 ISO 8482 vs. RS-485 issues (91-21) [Murdock, Milligan] .lm 6 Gene Milligan requested further input from X3T9.2 as to what should be in his letter to ISO. It appears that the request should ask for a variation of 8482 that more closely reflects the RS-485 parameters, particularly regarding the common-mode voltage range. Gene was also asked to include a request to address the needs of fast SCSI. 10. New Business 10.1 New Additional Sense Code 5Dh (91-27R1) [Penokie] Without objection, George's latest request for an ASC was accepted for SCSI-3. 10.2 Alternate SE Termination Method (91-37, -38) [Trung Le] George Penokie explained that in his opinion the laws of physics appear to apply equally to IBM regarding termination schemes for SCSI-2 systems. He is trying to get Trung Le to respond to the question raised by committee members regarding the IBM system configuration that would not operate correctly with the regulated terminator. 10.3 SE vs. Diff. Identifier Symbols? (91-49) [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer expressed a need for labeling single-ended and differential devices in some consistent manner. John's document 91-49 was reviewed with several proposed additions and changes which John agreed to include in revision 1 of his proposal. 10.4 IGNORE WIDE RESIDUE issue [Lamers/Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer summarized the discussion at the last working group regarding how often can IGNORE WIDE RESIDUE message be sent. The consensus was that the target can send this message after each DATA IN phase which can be multiple times per I/O process. This message is never sent for DATA OUT phases and the initiator is not permitted to send this message. Gary Stephens had argued that some older applications would need to use this message outbound from the initiator following DATA OUT phases if they are to be upgraded to wide SCSI. The working group had rejected the idea as being obsolete and expensive to implement. 10.5 Review of new documents Various SCSI Interpretation Questions (91-53) [Doug Hagerman] Doug's document contains SCSI-2 implementation questions. The questions were assigned to the working group for resolution. New SCSI Commands for FFS (Flat File System) (91-56) [Jim McGrath] This document proposes that a file system command set be defined for SCSI devices. It was assigned to the working group for study. 10.6 Agenda for the Harrisburg Working Group The following draft agenda was established for the Harrisburg working group meeting May 14-15, 1991: 1. IEEE/PCMCIA/SFF report [McGrath] 2. Flat File System (91-056R1) [McGrath] 3. Statement on Queuing [McGrath] 4. Control of SCSI Device Power (91-014R3) [Penokie] 5. DEC issues on SCSI-2 implementation (91-053) [Hagerman] 6. Issues on CAM XPT/SIM document (91-046) [Gallant] {Tuesday p.m.} 7. Diagnostic Command Set (90-103R2) [Pickford] {Wednesday a.m.} 8. ATA issues - cable scheme (91-052R1) [McGrath] 9. ATA - 8-bit Compatibility [Hanan] 10. ATA - Set Features command [all] 11. SCSI Device Identifier (91-49R1) [Lohmeyer] 12. Serial SCSI {Wednesday p.m.} 13. SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol (SPP) (91-013R0) [Stephens] {Wednesday p.m.} 10.7 Low-Cost Serial Interface Presentation [Johnson] Brian Johnson of Seagate gave a presentation on how to implement a low- cost serial interface on rigid disk drives and other peripheral devices. The interface would operate at 25 MB/sec at up to 10 km for a 20% premium over current SCSI physical implementation. A fully integrated implementation could yield a 33% cost saving over current implementations. The physical layer of Bruce's interface uses ordinary ECL transmitters, standard cable television coaxial cables, and an equalizer circuit for high-frequency transmission above 250 Mhz. The principal loss mechanism is attenuation which affects the 2nd and 3rd harmonics of the signal. The data is 8b10b encoded using the FIber Channel coding scheme. The equalizer circuit compensates for increased attenuation of the higher frequency signals. Please refer to 91-54 for details. George Penokie said that Greg Floryance had requested a special-subject working group at next working group week to develop the concept. A meeting was scheduled for Monday afternoon, May 13, 1991 as an educational session for members of X3T9.2. The topic will also be discussed as part of the regular SCSI working group meeting on Wednesday, May 15, 1991. 10.8 Sequential Access Density Code Correction [Pisciotta] John said he had received a letter from David Moore of Data General with questions about the sequential-access command set (91-043). He had referred the letter to Gary Stephens who had answered David's question via a phone call. Gary Stephens also plans to write a follow-up letter with a copy to the committee. One of David's questions had concerned whether the density code information for 8 mm tapes was correct. Apparently it was not as another letter from Chris Pisciotta (91-45) points out the error and provides the correct information. The correction was accepted for SCSI-2. 11. Review of Action Items 1. Gene Milligan will draft a letter to the appropriate international organization requesting that ISO 8482 be revised to resolve the discrepancies between it and EIA RS-485. 2. Gary Stephens will write a response to the David Moore letter (91-43) on sequential-access issues. 3. Larry Lamers will correct the 8-mm sequential-access density code in SCSI-2. 12. Meeting Schedule The next meeting of X3T9.2 will be June 17-18, 1991 at the Hotel Sofitel Minneapolis (612-835-1900) in Bloomington, Minnesota hosted by StanaTek. The group name is X3T9/StanaTek.
