Review of Action Items 12. Meeting Schedule 12.1 General Working Group Schedule 13. Adjournment Results of Meeting 1. Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday February 18, 1991. He thanked Rhonda Dirvin of Motorola for hosting the meeting in a warm location. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the X3T9.2 membership list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the following additions: 8.6 ATA Status 8.7 SCSI-3 Status 10.7 IEEE Disk Attachment Study Group 10.8 Notch Page (91-006 R1) [Peper] 10.9 ISO 8482 vs. RS-485 issues [Murdock] 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two out of three consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the Chair of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The Chair indicated that since the last meeting, the following membership changes had occurred: Bob Whiteman has replaced Ed Reynolds as the AMP alternate member; Mark Pearson and Jerry O'Keefe have both left Datacopy leaving no representatives from that organization--consequently, the Datacopy membership was dropped; Doug Hagerman was reinstated as an alternate member for Digital; Jim Patton of Visqus requested that their membership be terminated. Bill Burr, NIST and past Chair of X3T9.2, was reinstated as a member at the meeting. With the termination of Datacopy and Viscus plus the two terminations for non-attendance (see 3.1), the X3T9.2 voting membership is now at 59 down from 62 organizations at the last meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees at the meeting. Enclosure (2) is the X3T9.2 membership changes since the last minutes and enclosure (3) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The Chair said he had sent 17 jeopardy letters to 8 organizations: Amphenol, Astro Cable, Cinch Connector, Control Data, Data General, Maxoptix, Northern Telecom, and Standard Microsystems. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended the February plenary meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. Peter Blackford informed the Chair that he had attended the August 1990 plenary meeting, but was not recorded as attending; therefore the Astro Cable membership was not in jeopardy. Members were present from all of the organizations in jeopardy except: Cinch Connector and Northern Telecom. The members from these organizations were changed to observer status. 4. Approval of Minutes - December Meeting San Jose, CA (X3T9.2/90-193) The minutes were approved as written. 5. Document Distribution The Chair noted that the mailing was distributed exceptionally early this time. As a consequence of the later working group meeting schedule, the mailing was assembled prior to these meetings. The minutes of the January working group meeting plus the new documents received there will be in the March mailing. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina Gray at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by noon on March 11, 1991. He noted that the March mailing will not contain the results of the March working group meetings. These minutes will be available on the SCSI BBS (316-636-8700) and will be distributed to the SCSI Reflector E-mail list. To be added to the SCSI Reflector, send an electronic message to: scsiadm@wichita.ncr.com. Liaison Reports 6.1 ISO [Milligan] Gene Milligan, the X3T9 International Representative, provided the following report: ISO/IEC Report 2/91 SC 25 and its working groups met during the week of 7 January in Las Vegas. Minutes, for review, have not yet been distributed. The recommendations of WG 4 were adjusted and ratified by SC 25 or declared to be de facto. The recommendations of WG 4 were: 1 to accept SC 25 N____ FDDI HRC, as DIS 9314-5 and to authorize the issuance of a DIS letter ballot. 2 to send a liaison statement to SC 6 in response to 1.6N6301. "SC 25/WG 4 has received 1.6N6301. SC 25/WG 4 agrees with the proposal to include ISO 9314-2 in the scope of ISO 10039 (LAN-MAC Sublayer Service Definition). Attached to this liaison statement is the result of a review of the proposed annex to ISO 10039, contained in 1.6N6301." The liaison shall not be sent until X3T9 has concluded its review of the proposed annex in 1.6N6301 and forwarded the results to the SC 25/WG 4 secretariat. However it is intended that the liaison statement be sent to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6 prior to the meeting of their WG 1 in July 1991, and if possible by March 15, 1991. 3 Authorize the SC 25 secretariat to issue no later than March 1, 1991 a call to member bodies to nominate candidate project editors for an IPI part 7: "Generic command set for communications" and authorizes its secretariat to take the necessary steps to discontinue the project if appropriate candidates have not been nominated within three months after issuance of the call. 4 In recognition of the fact that SCSI-2 is a revision of SCSI which accommodates IS 9316 SCSI devices and in recognition of the fact that SCSI-2 has included the de-facto interpretations of SCSI known as common command set (CCS), to request the ITTF to register the DIS as a revision of ISO 9316 and to discontinue the number 10288. 5 In light of the increasing activity in the regional workshops (AOW, OIW, EWOS) on drafting International Standardized Profiles (ISPs) also for FDDI use, SC 25 resolves not to pursue the ISP work any further and asks SGFS to inform the regional workshops of this decision. 6 SC 25 instructs its secretariat to send a liaison statement to JTC 1/SGFS which requests SGFS to accept SC 25/WG 4 as a permanent review group for draft ISPs related to FDDI. 7 to appoint Mr. Jens Kolind as liaison from SC 25/WG 4 to SC 6. 8 to reconfirm Mr. Juergen Schwandt as liaison from SC 25/WG 4 to IEC/SC 65C/WG 3 and WG 6. The next meeting of WG 4 was tentatively scheduled for 30 September through 2 October 1991. The next meeting of SC 25 and the meeting after next for WG 4 was tentatively scheduled for the week of 15 June 1992 in Milan. The next meeting of the SC 25 TAG is 22 February in Washington DC. Because this is the same day as X3T9, a written WG 4 TAG is being submitted. 6.2 IT8 [Lohmeyer] John said he had no new information on IT8. However, he has received several recent phone calls concerning revising and enhancing the SCSI Scanner command set. A working group meeting on this topic is being scheduled during the next plenary week on Wednesday April 24, 1991 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 6.3 Fiber Channel [Allan] Dal Allan reported. IBM has agreed to license their patent on the 8b/10b encoding scheme used in Fiber Channel for a one-time $5000 fee per company. The FC-0, FC-1, and FC-2 documents are being merged into a single document called the Fiber Channel Physical Interface, which will contain components, encode/decode, and protocol sections. There were no major items to be debated on the agenda for the Fiber Channel working group meeting to be held later in the week. The attachment to S/390 had been raised as an issue because the structure of Fiber Channel control blocks did not provide some necessary capabilities. What seemed like a major problem turned out to cause only a minor change to protocol. The additions to permit indirect addressing to address a device behind the destination port were developed at a SSWG held at Amdahl in Sunnyvale early in February. Dal suggested that X3T9.2 review the P1394 interface and Gary Stephens' SCFI document. 6.4 Small Form Factor Industry Group [Allan] Dal Allan reported on the Small Form Factor industry group meeting held January 14, 1991 in Costa Mesa. More than 50 people were present, but several did not register. The group focused on media size and disk drive dimensions, particularly the width of the drive. A 54-mm wide disk drive was selected to permit either 47.5- or 48-mm media. This avoids the media size debate, which was left to IDEMA. There was a lot of discussion on the drive height. This led to a discussion on how to shrink the connector height. To give some idea of the importance of this issue, the objective for the smallest height for a 1.8-inch drives is 10 mm high. A mistake in the mailing, related to form factor reductions, will be corrected. The next meeting of the Small Form Factor group will be Monday March 18 in Sunnyvale, CA. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. John Lohmeyer will prepare a proposal on bus driving requirements for wide selection and reselection. Complete, see 91-1 R1. 2. John Lohmeyer to communicate the request to withdraw SCSI-2 to X3T9. Complete--see agenda item 8.5 for details. 3. John Lohmeyer to take the four SCSI-3 project proposals to X3T9. Complete--X3T9 will address these at their February meeting. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 ESDI [Allan] John Lohmeyer reported that in spite of unanimous votes at X3T9.2, X3T9, and X3, ANSI is still nervous about the "Table 28 deletion" editorial change. Therefore, a one-month public review will be held to ensure that due process is followed. The notice about the public review will appear in the March 8, 1991 issue of "Standards Action" and the review period should commence shortly thereafter and conclude by May. (See also the related agenda item 10.1.) 8.2 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/91-004) John Lohmeyer reviewed the highlights of the meeting (see 91-004 for details). The working group had made several recommendations that were considered later in the plenary meeting. 8.3 SCSI-2 Common Access Method (CAM) Report Dal Allan reported that a new CAM XPT/SIM document (rev 2.3) had been prepared for the next mailing. Dal recommended that the document be reviewed at the April meeting and that a forwarding motion be planned for the June meeting. No further CAM working group meetings are planned at this time. 8.4 Alternative SCSI Differential Transceivers (91-007) [Lohmeyer] The January Low-Power Differential Working Group could not address several of its agenda items because of the absence of the Texas Instruments representatives. Luke Perkins (NCR) had presented his analysis of the three-resistor termination, using 650-135-650 ohm resistors. A single-resistor shunt method was explored. Its advantages include lower power and not requirement for terminator power, but it is not interoperable with existing differential devices. Gary Murdock had presented his concept for Low-Power Differential using the DIFFSENS line to provide interoperability with single-ended devices. The plenary group then returned to the market direction debate. John Lohmeyer pointed out that the people he spoke with who are using differential today are not willing to give up their noise margin. Perhaps Gary Murdock's proposal to define Low-Power Differential pinouts that are close to those for single-ended would provide a migration path for high-end single-ended designs. Dal Allan argued against a third driver/receiver alternative in SCSI. He felt the market was too confused by the current situation and that Low- Power Differential should be compatible with existing differential. Jim McGrath (Quantum) contended that the small drive market only need single- ended for the short distances expected. Gary Murdock pointed out that the existing pinouts of A-cable are not consistent with his proposal, however the P, Q, and L cables are not yet cast in concrete and could have a consistent definition. Gary Murdock presented 91-20 showing a 60-meter cable test setup, using 30 AWG wire, similar to Bill Spence's test setup. The tests show Low- Power Differential signal quality vs. single-ended signal quality. It was noted that the signal placement had not been controlled. Gene Milligan requested that if a new interface definition is to be considered then issues beyond speed and distance need to be addressed, such as hot-plugging. The next Low-Power Differential Working Group meeting is Monday March 18, 1991, at 1:00 p.m. in the Sunnyvale Hilton. 8.5 SCSI-2 Status The Chair reported that he had received a copy of a letter to Larry Lamers from Kristine Gonda, the ANSI Editor assigned to SCSI-2. The letter acknowledges the committee's request that SCSI-2 be returned for further editing. In the letter, Ms. Gonda has offered ANSI's assistance in this effort. The Chair noted that the revised SCSI-2 document must go through the appropriate approval procedures which will include forwarding by X3T9.2 and X3T9, a two-month public review period, and X3 approval before it can be returned to ANSI. It is expected that SCSI-2 Rev 10d will be completed in time for the May committee mailing. 8.6 ATA Status A proposal from Steve Anderson of Conner Peripherals to allow feature settings to be saved through a software reset was accepted at the January working group meeting. Dal Allan reported that a new ATA document (rev 2.3) had been prepared for the next mailing. Dal recommended that the document be reviewed at the April meeting and that a forwarding motion be planned for the June meeting. 8.7 SCSI-3 Status John Lohmeyer presented an overview of the work he, George Penokie, and Kurt Chan have done in preparing SCSI-3. The basic architecture of SCSI- 3 and a rough draft of the SCSI-3 Physical Interface document have been started. John outlined the word processing steps taken in creating the SCSI-3 documents from a Word Perfect (tm) version of the SCSI-2 Rev 10c document. The 10d changes will have to be independently incorporated into the SCSI-3 documents. George presented a foil of the architecture (see 91-25). 9. Old Business 9.1 Mixed Device Selection Issue for P Cable (91-1 R1) [Lohmeyer] This proposal was prepared to permit a wide SCSI device to only drive the bus width that it supports for SCSI IDs during selection and reselection. This facilitates implementations that use companion logic to support a wider data path than the number of supported bus IDs. The working group have reviewed the proposal and recommended that it be adopted. John Lohmeyer moved and George Penokie seconded that 91-001 R1 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion passed 26:0:0. 9.2 Data Compression Mode Page Proposal (90-119R1) [Krupa] Robert Simpson stated a need for SCSI compatibility for products that will be available during 1991. He was asking for support from the committee so that there is a forum for standardization. At the very least a method to turn compression on or off and a method for specifying the algorithm is needed. There was discussion on whether there should be one or two mode pages. Since it was assumed that at least some vendor-specific fields would be necessary, several people favored defining a mode page dedicated to vendor-specific data compression fields. This would avoid embedded vendor-specific fields in the "standard" data compression mode page. Further discussion was deferred to the Compression/Encryption working group meeting Monday, March 18, in Sunnyvale, CA. 9.3 SCSI Function to allow User Friendly Long Busy (90-168 R1) [Milligan] Gene Milligan presented his revised proposal which adds a Busy Time-Out Period field and incorporates other suggestions from the January working group meeting. Two corrections were noted: The Page Length should be 0Ah and "Resserv." should be "Reserved". Gene Milligan moved and Jim McGrath (Quantum) seconded that 90-168 R1 as corrected be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion passed 21:1:0. 9.4 Concurrent execution of more than one I/O Process (90-169,-173) [Penokie, Peper] George Penokie is awaiting Jim McGrath's (Quantum) write up on this topic. John Lohmeyer asked those interested in this topic to review the specific problems identified in the HP document and consider what minimum clarifications to SCSI-2 would be required to clarify that multiple concurrent I/O Processes are permissible. 9.5 Increasing LUN Addressability (90-183) [Penokie] George Penokie moved and John Lohmeyer seconded that 90-183 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion passed 19:0:0. 9.6 New Additional Sense Code Qualifiers (90-184) [Penokie] The January Working Group had recommended that this proposal be accepted. George Penokie moved and Gerry Houlder seconded that 90-184 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion passed 19:0:0. 9.7 High-density connector retention (90-187) [Chan] Kurt Chan moved and Bill Spence seconded that the IPI retention mechanism (2-56 jack screw with minimum torque specification of 11 inch-pounds) be adopted for the SCSI-3 high-density 68-position connector. Current IPI connectors use a 2-56 jack screw made of high-tensile strength steel. Bob Herron suggested using a 2.5-mm thread screw, which is half-way between 2-56 and 4-40 and can be made of a less costly material. Dave Shaff added that several Japanese manufacturers are using a 2.6-mm thread screw. Bob Whiteman stated that IPI specifies a minimum of 11 inch-pounds of torque. A 2-56 screw can be made with a minimum rating of 16 inch-pounds torque, depending on the material. The motion passed 24:1:0. 10. New Business 10.1 ESDI Power Pin Diameter Issue (90-199, 91-023) [McGrath] Jim McGrath of Molex pointed out that there is a problem with lack of standards on the power pin diameter of ESDI and other drive power connectors. Pin diameters range from 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) to 0.084 inch. Adding tolerances, this means that the diameters range from 0.077 to 0.086 inches. This results in high plugging forces, bad connections, and occasionally in reversed polarity. The reversed polarity problem is aggravated by the soft materials used in the connector housing and the expectation of high insertion forces. Jim proposed that the pin dimensions should be specified as 0.0825 +/- 0.001 inches. He also suggested that minimum and maximum insertion forces should be specified. Gene Milligan noted that while ESDI disk drives suffer from this problem, a bigger problem (in volume) exists with other disk drive interfaces, such flexible disk. He suggested that another forum would be appropriate for resolving this problem. Gene Milligan and Jim McGrath (Molex) accepted an action item to draft a letter to the P5 committee of EIA, and the 48B committee of IEC stating the problem and recommending a solution. 10.2 PC Memory Card Int'l Assoc. Presentation [Jim Clayton] Jim Clayton of Motorola Austin made a presentation on PC Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA). He noted that a release 2.0 document will be available in the near future. Contact John Reimer at Sundisk for further information. 10.3 CD-ROM Starting Logical Block Address (90-200,-202) [Simpson, Boulay] Robert Simpson moved and Larry Lamers seconded that the following wording be included in the CD-ROM section of SCSI-2 to remove an ambiguity on the location of logical block zero: "For data and mixed mode media (those conforming to ISO 10149), logical block address zero shall be assigned to the block at MSF address 00/02/00. For audio media (those conforming only to IEC 908), logical block address zero should be assigned to the actual starting address of track 1. This may be approximated by using the starting address of track 1 contained in the table of contents (TOC) or by assigning logical block address zero to the block at MSF address 00/02/00." Some objections were raised concerning whether this wording represented a technical addition or a clarification. No one objected to the actual wording, just whether it should be considered for SCSI-2 or SCSI-3 and if added to SCSI-2, should it be an implementors note. The motion passed 18:3:0. 10.4 Non-ASCII Characters in Log List Parameters (90-201 R1) [Penokie] The January working group had recommended that this proposal be accepted. George Penokie moved and John Lohmeyer seconded that document 90-201 R1 be included in SCSI-3. The motion passed 23:0:0. 10.5 Review of new documents 10.5.1 SCSI Message System Cleanup [91-008 R0] (Stephens) The first half of Gary's proposal was controversial. George Penokie represented Gary Stephens since Gary was not present. He pointed out that the requiring the target to ignore ATN in a RESELECTION phase until after the first byte of the subsequent MESSAGE IN phase was inconsistent with the rest of the SCSI architecture. It also means that nexus re-identification is inconsistent for I_T_L vs. I_T_L_Q nexuses. Gerry Houlder pointed out that the wording has existed for a long time and many targets implement it this way. Doug Pickford supported this view. This issue was deferred until the Sunnyvale working group meeting where Gary Stephens (hopefully) will be present to defend the proposal. The second half of Gary's proposal stems from an issue raised by Jeff Stai concerning when the initiator restores the pointers on a reconnection. The current wording in SCSI-2 had not been updated when tagged queuing was incorporated. George Penokie moved and Doug Pickford seconded that the correction to section 5.6.7 contained in document 91-008 R1 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-2 provided no objection is raised prior to close of the next plenary meeting. The motion passed 14:2:0. 10.5.2 Control of SCSI Power Sequencing [91-014 R0] (Penokie) This proposal originated with a similar feature in the ATA interface. There was some discussion of whether the timers should be in parallel or in series and if the control for entering the conditions should be in the START STOP UNIT command. The proposal was remanded to the working group for further consideration. George planned to draft a revision to address some of the questions raised. 10.5.3 Glitch Report [91-018 R0] (Spence) This is a "For Your Information" document. Bill Spence summarized the content of his document. Questions have remained about the glitches which degrade the descending and ascending wave fronts of the bus signals. Empirical investigation indicates that between the two prime suspects, stub action and silicon action, the silicon action predominates in inducing these glitches. 10.5.4 Using MODE SELECT to set a drive to defaults [91-019 R0] (Hanmann) The proposal points out that some current products have implemented a mixture of CCS and SCSI-2 rules regarding MODE SELECT handling of non- changeable parameters. Furthermore, some products have treated "non- changeable" fields as not changeable by the initiator. However the target may change these fields as a side effect of changing a value in some other changeable field. Then the target reports ILLEGAL REQUEST when the initiator attempts to "reflect" the value retrieved with a MODE SENSE command. Paul Hanmann proposed that some "more friendly" approach be developed. George Penokie pointed out that being friendly can result in the initiator making a false assumption about what the target accepted. The topic was remanded to the working group for further consideration. 10.6 Agenda for the Sunnyvale Working Group The following draft agenda was established for the Sunnyvale working group meeting March 19-20, 1991: 1. SCSI Message cleanup (91-008 R0) [Stephens] 2. SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol (SPP) (90-132R3) [Stephens] 3. Data Compression Mode Page Proposal (90-119R1) [Krupa] 4. ATA issues - cable scheme 5. Diagnostic Command Set (90-103R2) [Pickford] 6. Concurrent execution of more than one I/O Process [Pepper, Penokie] 7. MODE SELECT defaults (91-019) [Hanmann] {Tuesday a.m.} 8. Media Changer problems 9. Control of SCSI Device Power (91-014) [Penokie] 10. IEEE/PCMCIA/SFF report [McGrath] 10.7 IEEE Disk Attachment Study Group Jim McGrath (Quantum) stated that he had attended an IEEE study group meeting last week. A second meeting is planned for 3/8/91 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Quantum. The purpose of the second meeting is to discuss the group's charter. The group is principally interested in very small disk drives (e.g., 1.8-inch and smaller form factors). Dal Allan expressed concern that the formation of this group may lead to charter issues between IEEE and the other groups that are working on similar issues. Dal suggested that clearly defined charters for the various groups would help to avoid conflicts. 10.8 Notch Page (91-006 R1) [Peper] The working group determined that if all the rules of SCSI-2 are followed then the active notch cannot be changed without a guessing game. The working group had recommended accepting Mike Peper's proposal. Mike Peper moved and Jim McGrath (Quantum) seconded that 91-006 R1 be accepted for SCSI-2 to clarify the use of the Notch Page. The motion passed 19:0:0. 10.9 ISO 8482 vs. RS-485 issues (91-21) [Murdock] John provided some background information. The understanding was that the ISO 8482 standard was identical to the EIA RS-485 standard, however Gary Murdock has discovered it is not. Gary stated that there is no transceiver on the market that fully complies with ISO 8482. Gary offered to pursue the reasons for the ISO standard discrepancies through National Semiconductor's EIA representative to the appropriate ISO committee. Gene Milligan moved and Norm Harris seconded that X3T9.2 request its Chairman to write a letter to the appropriate ISO committee to request that 8482 be revised and that it not include the changes identified in 91-21 in SCSI-2. Dal Allan moved to divide the question. The motion passed. The resulting motions are: 1) that X3T9.2 request its Chairman to write a letter to the appropriate ISO committee to request that ISO 8482 be revised; 2) that X3T9.2 not include the changes proposed in 91-021 in SCSI-2. Gene Milligan withdrew the second part of the motion and accepted the below action item in place of the first part of the motion. Gary Murdock moved and Dal Allan seconded that in the ANSI version of SCSI-2 RS-485 be used as the reference standard instead of ISO 8482. The motion passed 21:0:0. Gene Milligan accepted an action item to draft a letter to the appropriate international organization requesting that ISO 8482 be revised to resolve the discrepancies between it and EIA RS-485. 11. Review of Action Items 1. Gene Milligan will draft a letter to the appropriate international organization requesting that ISO 8482 be revised to resolve the discrepancies between it and EIA RS-485. 2.
