X3T9.2/91-009 February 12, 1991 Prepared by: John B. Lohmeyer X3T9.2 Chair X3 Technical Committee Annual Report for 1990 X3T9.2 -- Lower Level Interfaces I. Projects 1. Small Computer System Interface (SCSI-2) a. Project 375R, Small Computer System Interface (SCSI-2) b. Target date for dpANS to X3: Original target date: January 1988 Previous target date: March 1990 (Actual: May 1990) Current target date: September 1991 c. Project Description: This is an extension of ANSI, X3.131, Small Computer System Interface, a low cost but highly "intelligent" bus interface for microprocessor-based computer systems. The interface is primarily aimed at the interconnection of small computers and high-bandwidth block transfer peripherals and includes relatively high-level command command sets for magnetic disks and tapes, optical disks, and printers. This is a multimaster bus which also supports direct computer-to-computer interconnections. SCSI-2 adds some new device types (e.g., scanners, communications devices, and "jukeboxes") and considerably expands the command sets for some existing device types. It also provides for faster data transfer rates (up to 40 MBytes per second). d. Publications During Past Year: Revision 10c of X3T9.2/86-109, Small Computer System Interface - 2, was issued March 9, 1990 which resolved the public review comments on Revision 10b. Revision 10c was subsequently approved by X3 and by ANSI. This document will not be published by ANSI at the committee's request (see item e., below). e. Statement of Progress or Accomplishments During Year: SCSI-2 was approved by ANSI on August 31, 1990. f. Statement of Status as of This Report: All ten public review comments were resolved without substantive changes. Revision 10c, which contains the editorial changes, was approved by X3T9.2, X3T9, X3, and ANSI. However, X3T9.2 found a number of editorial errors and a few technical errors prior to publication. X3T9.2 voted to correct several of the editorial errors during publication as had previously been the ANSI custom. Unfortunately, at about the same time, the ANSI publications department decided to take a rather strict interpretation of its rules and permitted no committee-initiated changes. They still insisted on their rights to make thousands of ANSI-initiated editorial changes. Since there is no expeditious process to correct errors in standards (published or unpublished), X3T9.2 voted to withdraw SCSI-2 from ANSI. X3T9 has requested that the X3 Secretariat take the necessary steps to recall SCSI-2 from ANSI. X3T9.2 plans to prepare a SCSI-2 Revision 10d document which will corrected the editorial errors and technical errors found in Revision 10c. This document will be processed at Milestone 8 as if technical changes were made as the result of the first public review. g. Future Plans: X3T9.2 has begun activities on the approved SCSI-3 project (685-D). A revision to this project proposal has been forwarded to X3T9 along with three additional project proposals which would divide the SCSI-3 project into four separate, but related standards. h. Reasons for Delay: The project was delayed because of a change in the ANSI publication practices which was made retroactive to include SCSI-2. 2. Enhanced Small Device Interface (ESDI) a. Project 587D, Enhanced Small Device Interface (ESDI) b. Target date for dpANS to X3: Original target date: Previous target date: April 1989 Current target date: X3 approved ESDI 10/10/89 c. Project Description: ESDI defines a disk interface oriented toward newer disk drives with transfer rates of 10 to 24 Mbit/sec. Much of the development work on ESDI was done by an industry group while this project was assigned to X3T9.3. In June 1987, this project was transferred to X3T9.2. d. Publications During Past Year: none. e. Statement of Progress or Accomplishments During Year: The standard was prepared for publication and is on hold at ANSI. f. Statement of Status as of This Report: The document spent most of 1990 on hold. ANSI refused to publish the standard because of an editorial change made by the Technical Editor during publication. This change removed a redundant (and confusing) name for two diagnostic parameters, using instead the same names for these parameters that are used in every other case. As a result, Table 28 was deleted because it merely mapped the two sets of terms. Unanimous motions at X3T9.2, X3T9, and X3 approving the change as purely editorial were not enough to persuade the publications department at ANSI that the change is not substantive. So the current plan is to conduct a third public review period on ESDI. g. Future Plans: X3T9.2 has no current plans to revise or enhance ESDI. In fact, this interface will likely be obsolete soon after ANSI finally publishes the standard. h. Reasons for Delay: The Technical Editor tried to improve the quality of the document by making an editorial change that made ANSI antsy. 3. Small Computer System Interface (SCSI-3) a. Project 685D, Small Computer System Interface (SCSI-3) b. Target date for dpANS to X3: Original target date: February 1991 Previous target date: Current target date: April 1993 c. Project Description: The current project authorizes the development of a third-generation SCSI standard, including all aspects of the interface from physical components through command sets. X3T9.2 is requesting that the project scope be reduced to just include the SCSI-3 Command Sets. Two separate project proposals have been forwarded to X3T9 to cover the SCSI-3 Physical Interface and the SCSI-3 Interlocked Protocol. This would divide SCSI-3 into three separate documents that are more manageable in size and more logically structured. In addition, a SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol project proposal has been forwarded to X3T9. This project would define a method to deliver SCSI commands over interfaces that support delivery of packets, such as Fiber Channel (Project 755-D). d. Publications During Past Year: Several proposals have been distributed, discussed, and a few have been accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3 (see the document register). There is no draft working document, however. e. Statement of Progress or Accomplishments During Year: The following documents were accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3: Document Ent Date Doc Date Author Description of Document Resolution ------------- -------- -------- --------------- --------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------- X3T9.2/90-21 1/11/90 10/29/90 G. Spence Pinout Control of SCSI Round Cable Assemblies Revised as requirement and accepted for SCSI-3 at 10/90 mtg f. Statement of Status as of This Report: The SCSI-3 project has been delayed by a lack of volunteers edit the documents. Larry Lamers, the SCSI-2 Technical Editor, has been unavailable for this activity because of the unanticipated delays in SCSI-2. Many companies are reluctant to make a multi-year commitment to edit these documents. Recently, two people have volunteered to assist in the editing, but their companies have not made a long-term commitment. g. Future Plans: The various SCSI-3 projects will consume the committee's resources for the next few years. h. Reasons for Delay: SCSI-2 was delayed and the SCSI-3 project is being re-structured into separate documents. 4. SCSI Common Access Method (SCSI CAM) a. Project 792-D, SCSI Common Access Method b. Target date for dpANS to X3: Original target date: August 1991 Previous target date: Current target date: August 1991 c. Project Description: This project will define a common method to access SCSI devices through a standard software interface to SCSI host adapters for several popular operating systems. This should result in simplified integration of products. d. Publications During Past Year: The SCSI-2 Common Access Method Transport and SCSI Interface Module working draft document was distributed at the end of the year. e. Statement of Progress or Accomplishments During Year: The bulk of this document was developed by the CAM Committee, an industry group. Most aspects of the SCSI CAM interface have been resolved and the document is nearly ready to be forwarded. f. Statement of Status as of This Report: Revision 2.3 of the working draft document has been prepared for the March 1991 committee mailing. There is some reason for concern about the DOS operating system. A representative from Microsoft informed the participants at a SCSI CAM ad hoc meeting that Microsoft plans to support a different solution (LADDR) on the DOS operating system. This may lead to market confusion concerning usage CAM vs. LADDR on DOS. g. Future Plans: none. h. Reasons for Delay: There is no delay yet. 5. AT Attachment Interface for Disk Drives (ATA) a. Project 791-D, AT Attachment Interface for Disk Drives b. Target date for dpANS to X3: Original target date: August 1991 Previous target date: Current target date: August 1991 c. Project Description: The widespread use of desktop computers with a 16-bit memory bus has led to the adoption within the industry of a disk drive which attaches via a subset of the personal computer AT bus. Because of their compatibility with existing personal computer AT hardware and software this interface quickly became a de facto industry standard. The intent of this project is to develop a standard to specify a subset of the AT bus specifically for the direct attachment of peripherals. This standard will specify the mechanical and electrical characteristics as well as the methods by which commands are directed to peripherals, the contents of registers, and the method of data transfers. d. Publications During Past Year: The AT Attachment working draft standard was distributed in September 1990. e. Statement of Progress or Accomplishments During Year: Much of the initial development on this draft standard was completed by the same industry committee that developed the SCSI CAM draft document. Two revisions have been prepared since that time. f. Statement of Status as of This Report: It is expected that X3T9.2 will forward this document to X3T9 in April or June 1991. g. Future Plans: none. h. Reasons for Delay: There is no delay yet. II. Committee Projects: SD-4 Report Input EST. ISO JTC 1 X3 PROJ. STD. CMPL. PROJ. DOC. Authorizing No/TYPE TITLE DESIG. DATE DESIG. Membership: The current X3T9.2 membership list at the end of 1990 is attached. e. Liaison Activities: X3T9.3, ISO/IEC JTC1/SC25/WG4, IT8. f. Administrative Matters of Note: I believe that it is time for X3 to seriously consider hiring a professional editor to deal with formatting and style issues on X3's draft standards. Working with the ANSI publications department has a number of pitfalls: 1. They refuse to correct even obvious typographical errors after receiving a document with BSR-9. They have even refused to permit such corrections after unanimous votes in X3 and its subcommittees certifying the changes are non-substantive. This gives us a choice between low quality standards or late standards. 2. Even with the new agreement to do ANSI editing concurrently with the public review period (which I enthusiastically applaud), there are still issues with preparing standards for ANSI and ISO. ANSI has publicly announced they will accept standards that follow the ISO style rules, but ANSI's publications department refuses to assist in preparing documents that are not already in ISO style. In fact, the ANSI publications department recently prepared a new ANSI style manual which does not follow the ISO directives. If X3 were to prepare and publish its own documents (in accordance with ANSI rules), we would have a lot better control over our fate. The vast majority of the organizations that develop ANSI standards already are doing so. g. Procedural Matters of Note: Both of these comments are repeated from the last two years: 1. In most cases, it is not feasible to delay project development until approval of the project proposal. 2. It still takes too long to process documents through public review. Because these delays are so long, it is inevitable that changes will be made, guaranteeing a second public review. We should overlap the SPARC compliance review with the public review period. IV. Anticipated Projects As mentioned above, X3T9.2 is recommending that the SCSI-3 project be split into three projects and that a fourth project be created to define a packetized protocol for delivering SCSI commands. V. Future Trends in This Technical Area Interest in the SCSI protocol continues to grow. This is in large measure due to the excellent support chips which have been developed by several manufacturers. In addition to its many low-cost applications, SCSI is becoming widely accepted for high-performance applications. This is largely due to the availability of high-performance protocol chips with support for synchronous data transfers. New protocol chips are becoming available with support for SCSI-2 features such as 16-bit data paths and command queuing. This should further entrench SCSI in high-performance applications. Physical storage products continue to shrink in size and cost. This will result in demand for smaller connector footprints. An industry group has recently been formed to study the needs of small form factor devices, particularly disk drives. Future standards projects be identified by this group.
