Review of Action Items 12. Meeting Schedule 12.1 General Working Group Schedule for 1991 13. Adjournment Results of Meeting 1. Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the chairman, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday December 3, 1990. He thanked Patrick Green of AMD for hosting the meeting in a convenient location. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the X3T9.2 membership list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved without additions. 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two out of three consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the chairman of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The chairman indicated that since the last meeting, the following membership changes had occurred: Fifteen individuals, mostly observers, were terminated for nonpayment of the X3 Secretariat Service Fee; Robert Otis became an alternate member for Apple Computer; Norm Harris replaced Rudy Stalzer as an alternate member for Digital Equipment Corp.; and Dexter Anderson replaced Curt Ridgeway as an alternate member for Sun Microsystems, Inc. The following membership changes occurred at the meeting: Jim McGrath and Glen Nance of Quantum were re-instated as the principal and alternate members, respectively. With 4 terminations for non-attendance (see 3.1), and one addition the X3T9.2 voting membership is now at 62 down from 65 organizations at the last meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees at the meeting. Enclosure (2) is the X3T9.2 membership changes since the last minutes and enclosure (3) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The chairman said he had sent 25 jeopardy letters to 9 organizations: AT&T, DPT, ICL, LMS, NEC, Panasonic, Panduit, Ricoh, and Tandem. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended the December plenary meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. Members were present from all of the organizations in jeopardy except: AT&T, ICL, LMS, and Panduit. The members from these organizations were changed to observer status. 4. Approval of Minutes - October Meeting Ft. Lauderdale, FL (X3T9.2/90-163) The minutes were approved as written. 5. Document Distribution The chairman said that due to the short meeting cycle, the X3 Secretariat had barely gotten the mailing out on time. His copy was postmarked November 19, two weeks prior to the meeting. The X3 rules do not specify what constitutes "distributing" the mailing for the purposes of the "two-week rule". There are at least three possible interpretations: 1) when the Document Distribution Representative sends the mailing to CBEMA, 2) when the mailing is postmarked, and 3) when members receive it. This mailing met at least two of the three interpretations. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina Gray at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by noon on January 2, 1991. He noted that the January mailing will not contain the results of the January working group meetings. The following new or revised documents were distributed and/or discussed at the meeting: Document Doc Date Author Description of Document ------------- -------- --------------- --------------------------------------- X3T9.2/90-21 10/29/90 G. Liaison Reports 6.1 ISO [Milligan] Gene Milligan, the X3T9 International Representative, gave the following report: The Agenda for the January meeting of SC 25/WG 4 was distributed to the U.S.A. delegates. Items of particular interest to X3T9 are: Project 1 including 9314-1 FDDI PHY, 9314-2 FDDI MAC, FDDI SMF-PMD NWI, FDDI HRC, FDDI SMT NWI; Project 10 including 9324 SMD, 9318-1 IPI Physical, 9318-2 IPI-2 Disk, 9318-3 IPI-3 Disk, 9318-4 IPI-3 Tape, 9318-5 IPI-2 Tape, 9318-6 IPI Enhanced PHY, 9318-7 IPI-3 Communications, 10,222 ESDI, 10,288 SCSI-2; Project 11; Project 11 FDDI ISP; and Proposed NWI HIPPI. The IR submitted final editor's reports for IPI-2 Disk, IPI-3 Disk, and IPI-3 Tape. The reports resulted in an ISO/IEC release for publication and an admonishment from ANSI to use a less official X3 title when submitting such items. Don Tolmie, Vice Chair of X3T9.3 has been added as a delegate to the meeting. The IR submitted Tolmie's ISO/IEC style, dated August 1990, update of HIPPI Rev 7.1 as an editorial replacement. The next, I believe second, meeting of the Collaborative Group on Procedures for ISO/IEC JTC 1 and CCITT Cooperation will be held 16- 17 January 1991. Documents ISO/IEC JTC 1 N 1012, 1024, 1025, and 1030 contain comments relative to the meeting 6.2 IT8 [Lohmeyer] While John had no new information on IT8, he mentioned that he had been contacted by Marilyn Courtot of AIIM regarding their interest in enhancing the SCSI Scanner Command Set for their applications. AIIM plans to explore possible liaison activities at their meeting later in the week. John had referred Ms. Courtot to Mark Pearson, the SCSI-2 Scanner Section Editor. John stated that X3T9.2 needs to start activities on enhancing both the Scanner and Printer command sets. While he welcomed coordination with other groups, he feared that the SCSI architecture could be compromised without the active participation of X3T9.2. 6.3 Fiber Channel [Allan] Dal Allan reported that the Fiber Channel group has met twice since the last plenary meeting and they are concentrating on getting protocol squared away. Revisions of the Fiber Channel documents are being prepared. A joint meeting between X3T9.3 and X3T9.2 was planned for Tuesday morning (see agenda item 10.7). 6.4 Small Form Factor Group [Allan] Dal Allan reported the the biggest Small Form Factor problem is dis- information on media sizes. Some members of IDEMA are expected to attend the next SFF meeting in Costa Mesa. Some IEEE members are upset that SFF exists. IDEMA has picked the 48 mm disk size. The SFF box dimensions added 3 mm to each side giving an outside dimension of 54 mm. Apparently 3 mm was not enough margin as a request to make the disk size 47.5 mm disks has been received. There are currently available four versions of pin assignments for SCSI using the 50 pin connector and one version using the 68 pin, including power and self-identification. There are currently available two versions of the ATA pin assignments. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. John Lohmeyer will submit the project proposal on SCSI Information Bulletins to X3T9. Complete. SPARC has accepted this project proposal and it should be at X3 letter ballot. John noted that he had had a moral victory in that SPARC had agreed that in the future separate project proposals will not be required for Technical Information Bulletins. 2. John Lohmeyer will submit the draft response to SCSI-2 Request for Interpretation #3 to X3T9. Complete. This Bulletin is at X3 for approval. 3. Gerry Houlder will develop a proposal for a bit in the Disconnect- Reconnect Mode Page to control MODIFY DATA POINTER message usage. Completed by Gene Milligan (See 90-166R1). 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 ESDI [Allan] The X3 letter ballot on approving the ESDI editorial changes has closed the previous week. At the time of the meeting, no one present knew the results. [Later in the week, Del Shoemaker announced that there were no negatives.] 8.2 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/90-174) John reported on the meeting. The significant item was the SCSI-3 projects road map and completion of the project proposals for the standards that will make up SCSI-3. Several recommendations were made that need to considered by the plenary. The polarity of the bit controlling the MDP message needs to be decided by the plenary and more discussion is needed on the long BUSY topic. The group studying concurrent execution of I/O processes also planned to report back to the plenary group. These topics are all on the agenda as old or new business items. 8.3 Cable Specification Working Group Meeting (X3T9.2/90-175) [Lamers] Larry Lamers reported on the meeting held October 29 in Austin. There are only a few remaining items to address. No separate meeting is planned for January. 8.4 SCSI-2 Common Access Method (CAM) Report [Allan] Dal Allan reported that the CAM committee is dead. The sunset clause has been executed. The final meeting will be in Kauai, Hawaii February 8-11, 1991. All future work will be done under X3T9.2. The CAM XPT/SIM document will be in the January 1991 committee mailing. Most sections of this document are stable. Some work remains for DOS, which is being addressed by Jerry Armstrong of NCR. 8.5 AT Attachment Report [Allan] A number of items have been raised. These are minor in nature will be dealt with at an ATA working group meeting, scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on December 3rd. John suggested that the committee establish April 1991 as a target for forwarding this document to X3T9. 8.6 Alternative SCSI Differential Transceivers (90-176) [Jessen] A low power differential meeting was held in Austin on October 29. By default, John Lohmeyer chaired the meeting and reported on it. It appears that no one knows what the requirements for common-mode noise voltage range are in real systems. Lacking definitive requirements, the group will probably adopt the common-mode voltage range that can readily be obtained with CMOS technology (about +/- 2 volts). There had been a presentation on hot-plugging by Roger Dimmick of IBM (see 90-178). Gary Murdock made a pitch to change pin assignments to get an ambidextrous interface that could be compatible with single-ended and low-power differential. If Gary's proposal is adopted, then present differential devices would require converter devices to re-map the pin assignments. (See agenda item 10.5 and document 90-177.) The next Low-Power Differential working group meeting will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 14, 1991 in Costa Mesa. 8.7 Report on ANSI Editing Session (90-188) [Lamers] Larry Lamers presented his report on the ANSI editing session November 27-28, 1990. There was extensive discussion on the subject, especially over the recent inflexible position ANSI has taken over input from the Technical Committees during the publication process. ANSI would not accept any input from the committee, even correcting obvious typographical errors. Larry Lamers moved and Dal Allan seconded that X3T9.2 request X3T9 initiate the actions necessary to withdraw SCSI-2 from ANSI to correct errors discovered during the final editing. A roll call vote was taken with the following results: Organization Name Yes No Abs NP 3M Company Mr. Wayne E. Roen 1 Adaptec, Inc. Mr. George T. Hahn Jr. 1 Advanced Micro Devices 1 AMP, Inc. Old Business 9.1 Additional SCSI Caching Control (X3T9.2/90-021R4) [Milligan] The Austin working group had recommended that this document be accepted for SCSI-3. Gene Milligan gave a summary of the recent changes. Gene Milligan moved and Sam Karunanithi seconded that X3T9.2/90-021R4 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion carried 33 yes and 0 no. 9.2 Mixing 8- and 16-bit devices (90-048 R7) [Penokie] John reported that NCR had problems with requiring devices to drive the entire bus width during SELECTION and RESELECTION phases. This causes problems for devices that support a wider bus for data transfers than they do for arbitration and selection. This requirement is not necessary for successful operation. He planned to bring a proposal to the Costa Mesa working group concerning this issue. 9.3 Data Compression Mode Page Proposal (90-119) [Krupa] Steve Krupa made a presentation on the need for a mode page to control data compression. The control is needed to enable and disable compression; to select an algorithm; and to allow the host to retrieve data in its compressed state; The control is for DDS/DAT devices operating as sequential-access devices. Larry Lamers raised the question of whether a separate device type is needed for DAT devices, but no consensus was reached. Gene Milligan raised the question of whether data compression control is desired for other device types in SCSI. John Lohmeyer replied that if data compression were desired for direct-access devices a file-oriented command set would be necessary. Dal Allan suggested that encryption capability be added; or that the CAM concept of an "engine" that processes data be used. This would add a general set of capabilities. The ability to download dictionaries should also be included. Dal reported that the compression issue is contentious within the standards organization at this time. X3B5 has indicated that they will establish liaisons with other organizations, however X3T9.2 has not been contacted as yet. John Lohmeyer recommended that the proposal be sent to a working group for further discussion. Dal Allan suggested a specific-subject working group be established for the data compression and encryption topic. A meeting was called for Monday, March 18, 1991 at 9:00 a.m. in Sunnyvale, CA. John requested that the HP representatives invite other interested parties to this meeting. 9.4 Dual-ported SCSI (90-136R2) [Houlder] Gerry Houlder outlined the changes made to rev 1 of the proposal. This proposal is complimentary to 90-130R3 by Gary Stephens which describes the model of dual-porting. Doug Pickford requested that both these documents be merged to avoid confusion. The bits in the INQUIRY data need to be moved since they conflict with the device configuration bits in 90-048. Bob Snively argued that the port ID should be expanded to handle at least 4 ports. The field will be expanded to 3 bits which could accommodate up to 7 ports. This will also requires changes in 90-130 from dual-port to multiple-port. Gary Stephens pointed out that the port ID numbers are not useful for the Fiber Channel interface. George Penokie moved and Ken Post seconded that a hard reset on any port causes the device to be reset on all ports. The motion carried 25 yes, 1 no, and 0 abstain. George raised a question on going to BUS FREE following the BUS DEVICE RESET OTHER PORTS message. This was not discussed at the last working group. Since the port receiving the message is not reset this should be treated as a regular message. This would allow resetting of both ports with back-to-back messages. The sentence requiring the BUS FREE phase follow the BUS DEVICE RESET OTHER PORTS message will be deleted. Gerry Houlder moved and Dal Allan seconded that 90-136R2 as modified be accepted as revised for inclusion in SCSI-3. The motion carried 25 yes, 0 no, and 0 abstain. 10. New Business 10.1 SCSI-3 Project Proposals (90-105R2, 90-146R1, 90-171, 90-172) John Lohmeyer presented the set of project proposals for SCSI-3. Gerry Houlder suggested changing the name on 90-146 from Fiber Channel PRotocol to Serial Channel Protocol. Dal Allan offered an alternative, Packetized Channel Protocol. This was subsequently changed to Packetized Protocol. The use of Fiber Channel will be listed as an example; other interfaces that can deliver packets are not precluded. The SCSI-3 Parallel Protocol will be changed to SCSI-3 Interlocked Protocol to better reflect its position opposite the SCSI-3 Packetized Protocol. Dal Allan moved and George Hahn seconded that the four SCSI-3 project proposals be forwarded to X3T9 for further processing. A roll call vote was taken with the following results: Organization Name Yes No Abs NP 3M Company Mr. Wayne E. Roen 1 Adaptec, Inc. Mr. George T. Hahn Jr. 1 Advanced Micro Devices 1 AMP, Inc. The motion carried 29 yes, 0 no, and 0 abstain. 10.3 SCSI Function to allow User Friendly Long Busy (90-168) [Milligan] The last working group recognized an operating system issue raised by Gene Milligan. Many operating systems do not correctly handle situations in which a device reports BUSY status for an extended period of time. But ECA conditions require that BUSY status be reported until the initiator that is responsible for the error recovery releases the recovery. There is no upper limit on how long a target could be require to report BUSY status in such a circumstance. The working group requested that Gene develop a proposal for providing a control bit in a mode page to enable CHECK CONDITION status in such circumstances. Gene's proposal would permit (require?) CHECK CONDITION status to be reported if the busy condition would exceed 500 milliseconds and the Report a Check (RAC) bit is set to one. Bob Snively asked if some new additional sense codes were needed to inform the host of the ECA state and whether a RECOVERED ERROR sense code is appropriate. For example, if READ command is issued, getting a RECOVERED ERROR sense code, when no data has been transferred might be confusing to a host. Jim McGrath suggested that we should solve the general problem of initiator time-outs for the BUSY status, the NOT READY sense key, and the overall command execution time. It became clear that the proposal required further study and it was remanded to the working group. 10.4 Concurrent execution of more than one I/O Process (90-169,-173) [Penokie, Peper] Due to scheduling limitations George Penokie and Mike Peper were not able to meet and draft a proposal. George Penokie stated that they plan to hold a special ad hoc meeting on January 16, 1991 at 1:00 p.m. in Costa Mesa. 10.5 Review of new documents S/E Cable Test Report 4 (90-170) [Spence] S/E Impedance optimizations and best case analysis III (90-185) [Spence] Bill Spence stated that his document 90-167 should have specified polyolefin insulation not polycarbonate. There is also an ambiguity due to the fact that wire diameter and AWG sizes change in different directions. He does not recommend the use any wire that has a lower AWG number than 28. It should also not be higher than 28 AWG for the 110 ohm terminator. Gene Milligan questioned whether the conclusion was based on a particular number of strands and Bill responded, "No." In document 90-157, the statement that Astro cable had achieved similar results even though impedance was different, was based on the spec. sheet impedance value and not a measured value. The surprising conclusion based on T.I.'s testing is that a ratio of cable impedance to terminator impedance of .75 appears to be an optimal target. A matched cable and terminator impedance does not work as well using real (as opposed to theoretical) cables. Reserved lines proposal and impact (90-182) [Dave Lincer] There was good discussion of the issue on what to do with RESERVED lines. Dave's paper points out that devices which include an optional terminator may have to provide switches or jumpers on each of the RESERVED signal lines to provide optional grounding. It turned out that for Dave's application, test equipment, jumpers are probably the only viable solution. The committee should revisit the issue again when there is greater visibility on likely usage of the RESERVED lines. Increasing LUN Addressability (90-183R0) [Penokie] This documents proposes to extend the LUN address to 32 by using the reserved bits in the IDENTIFY message. It was pointed out that this proposal has additional impacts in that the LUN field in the CDB should be reclaimed and the copy commands will require some extensions (mostly already contained in 90-48). There was some debate over whether the CDB LUN field should become reserved or vendor unique. (SCSI-2 contains a note cautioning that this field will likely be reclaimed in a future standard.) The proposal was remanded to the working group. New Additional Sense Codes and ASCQs (90-184R0) [Penokie] George Penokie requested that his proposal be remanded to the working group. HP Standoffs on P Cables (90-187) [Chan] Kurt outlines the three choices for P Cable retention: 1) as is for the A Cable with clips only 2) low profile clips and screws 3) IPI standoffs - 2-56 thread, high-tensile, - screws only, no clips. Kurt would like a single retention mechanism to be specified in standard. Solution #2 is weaker than #3. He noted that IPI is rumored to be having field problems with solution #3. John asked if samples of the solutions can be made available at the working group and/or the next plenary meeting. The Sun and TI members both supported the position that the retention mechanism should be part of the standard. The topic was remanded to working group for further study. SCSI-3 Cable Pin Outs (90-177, -195) [Murdock] Gary Murdock presented his proposal to change the pin-outs of the P, Q, and L cables so that a low-power differential and single-ended transceiver could be interchangeable. Gary planned to check RS-422 vs. RS-485 parts to determine their common- mode ground shifts. The next Low-Power Differential meeting will be on Monday, January 14, 1991 at 1:00 p.m. John mentioned he had received a paper from Luke Perkins (90-196) on the feasibility of retaining the totem pole termination for low-power differential. 10.6 Agenda for the Costa Mesa Working Group The following draft agenda was established for the Costa Mesa working group meeting January 15-16, 1991: 1. Meeting Schedule The next meeting of X3T9.2 will be February 18-19, 1991 at the Wyndham Southpark (512-448-2222) in Austin, TX hosted by Motorola. The group name is X3T9. The room rate is $70.00 single or double, plus tax. The reservation cutoff date is February 1, 1991. The upcoming plenary meeting schedule is: Date Location Host -------------------- ------------------------ --------------------- February 18-19, 1991 Austin, TX Motorola April 22-23, 1991 St. Petersburg, FL AMP June 17-18, 1991 Minneapolis, MN Stanatek 12.1 General Working Group Schedule for 1990 The Working Group Schedule is as follows: Date Location Host Comments ------------------- ---------------- --------------- ---------------- Jan 14-18, 1991 Costa Mesa, CA Future Domain See 90-158 Mar 18-22, 1991 Sunnyvale, CA ENDL {tentative} May 13-17, 1991 Harrisburg, PA AMP {date & location have changed} Jul 15-19, 1991 Valley Forge, PA UNISYS {tentative} Sep 16-20, 1991 Minneapolis, MN {tentative} Nov 4-8, 1991 Albuquerque Los Alamos National Labs The January 1991 working group week is to be divided as follows: Monday Small Form Factor (Not an X3T9 activity) Monday 1:00 p.m. SCSI Low-Power Differential Working Group Tuesday-Wednesday SCSI Working Group Tuesday-Wednesday HIPPI Working Group Thursday-Friday Fiber Channel Thursday-Friday Fiber Channel FC-0 Thursday-Friday IPI-2 Working Group Larry Lamers proposed that X3T9.2 reduce the total number ofits meetings in 1991 by eliminating the July and November working group meetings and changing the August plenary meeting into a working group meeting. He felt such changes would actually permit more work to be done by giving the editors more time to edit between meetings. This topic will be placed on the February meeting agenda for further discussion. 13. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 1990.
