Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the chairman, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday October 15, 1990. He thanked Buzz Rigsbee of Boeing Computer Services for hosting and arranging the meeting in such a pleasant location. John announced that SCSI-2 had been approved by ANSI on August 31, 1990 and is now in the publication phase. Larry Lamers, the Project Editor, is working with Christine Gonda who has been assigned as the ANSI Editor. John also announced that X3 had approved both the SCSI CAM and AT Attachment projects and they were assigned to X3T9.2. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the X3T9.2 membership list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the following addition: 10.7 Project Proposal to create TIBs for SCSI-2 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two out of three consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the chairman of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The chairman indicated that since the last meeting, the following membership change had occurred: Tom Wicklund has left Ciprico so Kurt Witte is now the principal member; Chuck Grant has become an alternate member for Madison Cable Corp.; and Arlan Stone has become an alternate member for UNISYS. Donna Pope and David Thayer joined the committee on the second day as the principal and alternate for Maxoptix. With two terminations for non-attendance (see 3.1), X3T9.2 voting membership is now at 65 down from 66 organizations at the last meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees at the meeting. Enclosure (2) is the X3T9.2 membership changes since the last minutes and enclosure (3) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The chairman said he had sent 21 jeopardy letters to 8 organizations: Congruent Software, Datacopy, DPT, DuPont, Mitsubishi, Northern Telecom, Panasonic, and Sony. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended the October plenary meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. Members were present from all of the organizations in jeopardy except Congruent Software and DuPont. The members from these organizations were changed to observer status. 4. Approval of Minutes - August Meeting Boulder, CO (X3T9.2/90-131) The minutes were approved as written. 5. Document Distribution The chairman said that CBEMA had copied and distributed the mailing quite promptly. He had received his copy of the mailing on September 20, more than three weeks prior to the meeting. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by noon on November 5, 1990. The following new or revised documents were distributed and/or discussed at the meeting: Document Doc Date Author Description of Document ------------- -------- --------------- --------------------------------------- X3T9.2/90-48 10/10/90 G. Liaison Reports 6.1 ISO [Milligan] Gene Milligan, the X3T9 International Representative, provided the following report: The IR provided X3T9.2 and X3T9.3 with letters summarizing the protracted ISO projects on the various IPI standards and the ESDI standard. The NWI letter ballot for the HPPI PH (HIPPI) closed 8/31. The USA voted yes with a comment to change the name to HIPPI. The document provided previously was Rev 7.1. FDDI HRC and SCSI-2 have very recently completed letter ballots. The results are summarized in N 23 and N 24 respectively. The NWI LB for the FDDI SMF-PMD closes 1/18/91. The FDDI PMD has been published as an ISO standard. A summary of the FDDI ISP comments received so far have been distributed in N 576. The IR has provided the US Technical Experts with registration forms for the Las Vegas meeting. An SC25 TAG meeting is scheduled for 11/8 in Washington DC. SC25 WG2 meets 9/17-21 in York. The agenda includes work on a 50 micron fiber annex, fiber version of IEEE 802.3 and 802.4 as well as the 802.5 work. Germany has declined to accept the Convenership of WG2. The letter ballot approving the Chairman of SC25, Popovic, closes 11/2. An update of the ISO document register is being provided to the various chairman. 6.2 IT8 [Lohmeyer] The chairman reported that he had received a letter (90-155) from Robert Strum, chairman of IT8/TSC/WG3, which included an updated section for Appendix H.2 of SCSI-2. The section, which describes the IT8 activities, will be included during the final editing at ANSI. It may be of interest to X3T9.2 members that IT8 has added an addendum to the IT8.4 standard that extends their command set to cover color hardcopy output devices in general and that future work in IT8 is directed toward the use of SCSI to interface high-end scanners to color electronic prepress systems. 6.3 Fiber Channel [Allan] The Fiber Channel committee has been discussing header size, whether it should be 16 or 24 bytes and the resultant effect on bandwidth. The 24- byte headers ease the workload on the processors. However, at least one company has a design in silicon that uses 16-byte headers, and others who see little value in interoperability of all classes of operation oppose carrying anything that they do not want. Lawrence Livermore Labs held a design review at their installation to which members of the Fiber Channel Working Group were invited. An SCFI (Small Computer Fiber Interface) draft has been prepared by Gary Stephens and is being reviewed by a small group prior to being distributed to the committee. 6.4 Small Form Factor Group [Allan] There have been two Small Form Factor (SFF) meetings since the last plenary. The dimensions of the 2.5-inch form factor, the locations of its connector, and pin 1 orientation have been agreed on. The outline of the 1.8-inch form factor has been completed with the same relative positions as the 2.5-inch form factor for the connector and one set of mounting positions. Retention schemes are being discussed. In particular, the use of an indented rail with a saw tooth is being considered as a common method for the use of tapered retainers designed by the integrator. Several interface ideas have been considered but no conclusion has been reached. The next meeting is set for Monday, January 14, 1991, in Costa Mesa, CA. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. John Lohmeyer will write a letter requesting SMC clarify the termination procedures and provide guidelines regarding termination exceptions. Complete (see 90-151). John noted that 90-151 does not address the second part of this action item. Del Shoemaker persuaded him that X3T9.2 should establish its own policies in this area. SMC is unlikely to be more specific than the SD-2. 2. Larry Lamers will incorporate the reserve/release, the write protect bit, and the DPOFUA bit clarifications into the SCSI-2 document during the final editing. Events have overtaken parts of this action item. Larry will only incorporate those items which ANSI agrees are strictly editorial. Any item in doubt will be a candidate for a SCSI Information Bulletin. Gene Milligan asked if ANSI would accept changes and clarifications certified by the committee as being non-substantive. John answered that his impression was that if the ANSI editor was uncomfortable with a change, he/she might require X3 verification that it was non- substantive, but that ANSI makes the final judgement on these issues and some changes would not be accepted even with X3 verification. X3 does have a procedure for issuing interpretations on published standards that can be done relatively quickly. This procedure results in the publication of Technical Information Bulletins by CBEMA. John had prepared a project proposal for SCSI-2 Technical Information Bulletins expecting that this mechanism would be appropriate for those issues that go beyond simple editorial corrections. Technical Information Bulletins can be published by CBEMA through Global Engineering Documents after approval by X3 and do not require a public review period. They do not alter the standard, however. 3. John Lohmeyer will request X3T9 to pursue a rule change that would permit either a principal or observer membership on the Task Groups for Technical Committee members without additional service fees. Complete. This actually is not a rule change; there is nothing in the SD-2 that addresses this practice. Del Shoemaker took an action item to pursue the issue. 4. John Lohmeyer will advise X3T9 that the ESDI changes to delete Table 28 and to revise section 7.12 are editorial and make no substantive changes to the document. Complete. X3 has issued a letter ballot on the topic. 5. John Lohmeyer will draft a description of the interaction of outbound DISCONNECT and TTD messages. Complete (see 90-133R1). 6. John Lohmeyer will revise the June minutes and post them on the SCSI BBS. Complete. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 ESDI [Allan] John Lohmeyer reported that ESDI is on hold at ANSI until the X3 letter ballot on accepting the "Table 28 deletion" closes. Larry Lamers has received the final document (pending the X3 letter) from Harvey Rosenfeld, the ANSI editor. Larry sent a copy to Dal Allan who said, "It is pretty". 8.2 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/90-139) A general SCSI working group meeting was held September 4-5, 1990 in Westminster, CO hosted by Roger Cummings of StorageTek. There were 28 people present. There was general agreement that dual-porting should be added to the SCSI-3 Physical interface and that packetization and multi-porting should be part of the SCSI-3 Fiber Channel project. Progress was made toward establishing the dual-porting architecture. Gerry Houlder revised his document (90-136R1) to reflect the working group direction. George Penokie added parity checking rules to his 90-48 document for SELECTION and RESELECTION phases. These rules tell when to check parity so that systems with mixed device widths will only check parity on the buses actually driven by the arbitration winner. It was pointed out that the receiver input current specifications will have to be tightened if we intended to permit 16 or devices on the bus. 8.3 Cable Specification Working Group Meeting (X3T9.2/90-140) [Lamers] Larry Lamers reported on the activities in the Cable Working Group. The last meeting discussed color-coding schemes, Bill Spence's report on single-ended analysis, Kurt Chan's high-density connector retention issue, and Jim Fiala's testing procedures for cables and construction of a 68-conductor cable. See 90-140 for details. 8.4 SCSI-2 Common Access Method (CAM) Report [Allan] The CAM work is nearly finished. The next meeting (Monday, October 29, 1990) is expected to be the final CAM Committee meeting. A ballot is presently circulating amongst the members to forward the XPT/SIM document to X3T9.2 and close down the committee. When the draft document has been submitted to X3T9.2, work will continue under the newly-approved SCSI CAM project. 8.5 AT Attachment Report [Allan] The AT Attachment project proposal is approved and all further work will be conducted under this project. Gene Milligan raised a concern about ATA functioning correctly on slow computers where a race condition with the real time clock may occur. He planned to get more details for a future meeting. 8.6 Alternative SCSI Differential Transceivers (90-154) [Micalizzi] Chuck Micalizzi presented the results of a low-power differential working group meeting that occurred on September 26, 1990. See 90-154 for details. This group met because many (but not all) people feel that single-ended SCSI cannot handle Fast SCSI data rates over sufficient distances. However, differential SCSI requires significant power and board area making it unacceptable for small form-factor devices. There was significant discussion over whether the working group was addressing the "correct" problem. This was largely a marketing discussion. The plenary group felt it was necessary to give the working group guidance in the form of requirements and goals, but the there was less than unanimous consensus over what the specific requirements and goals should be. The lack of consensus reflects that there is more than one problem to be solved: 1) Smaller form-factor differential compatible with the current SCSI differential devices and 2) Higher-speed, more robust growth path for today's high-end single-ended devices. The second problem does not require interoperability with current differential devices. It may be possible to solve both problems with one solution, but neither group wanted their problem to have second priority. Overnight, Larry Lamers prepared a "straw-horse" set of requirements and goals which John Lohmeyer presented Tuesday morning. The group modified the requirements and conducted a straw poll on which requirements should be given to the working group. It was decided that the actual straw poll results should be given to the working group so that the degree of consensus (or lack thereof) could be conveyed: REQUIREMENTS a. Low Power; able to integrate transceivers on a protocol chip. (20-1) [Gary Murdock felt that a two- or three-chip solution should also be acceptable.] b. Accommodate 8- and 16-bit data bus. (9-3) [Three people felt that a single-chip 16-bit solution is not necessary.] c. Support 16 devices per system. (17-3) [Same three people from b.] d. Support of 10 mega-transfers per second. (25-4) [Four people felt that 20 mega-transfers per second should be a requirement.] e. Supported cable length of: 6 meters (none), 15 meters (7), or 25 meters (24). f. Interoperable with current devices: Single-ended (7), Differential (13), This should only be a goal (13). [Obviously, the new differential could only be interoperable with either single-ended or differential. People were allowed to cast one vote for each of these choices.] GOALS (There was little discussion and no voting on these items.) a. Desirable to get to 15 or 20 mega-transfers per second. b. Desirable to get greater than 25 meter cable length. c. Desirable to support up to 32 devices per system. d. Desirable to be able to hot plug devices. e. Interoperable with existing differential or single-ended devices. 8.7 SCSI-3 Physical Level Project Proposal (90-105R2) [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer reported that the SCSI-3 Physical Project Proposal in on the X3T9 agenda for their Friday meeting, but that Del Shoemaker, the X3T9 chairman, feels it should be delayed until X3T9.2 has a "roadmap" document showing how the current SCSI-3 project should be divided. John explained that each standard developed requires a separate project proposal, thus the current SCSI-3 project proposal cannot be used to develop multiple standards. The SCSI-3 Physical Layer project proposal makes it obvious that the original SCSI-3 project proposal needs revision. Del Shoemaker does not want to send any more SCSI-3 project proposals to SPARC until we have a complete plan. The committee direction for the physical documents is fairly clear, but it is not clear how to divide the command sets. This issue was placed on the agenda for the Austin working group meeting. Dal Allan has prepared a project proposal for a project that would map SCSI onto Fiber Channel (see 90-146). The project proposal will be discussed at the Austin working group meeting and will be on the December agenda. 9. Old Business 9.1 Additional SCSI Caching Control (X3T9.2/90-021R2) [Milligan] Gene Milligan stated there were no new inputs. 9.2 Mixing 8- and 16-bit devices (90-048 R6) [Penokie] George Penokie presented the further changes made to his document to cover selection and reselection of 8-, 16-, and 32-bit devices. Parity is not checked on the upper bits if there is not an active ID bit or parity bit asserted on the bus. Devices capable of driving a wide bus are required to drive the wide bus during SELECTION and RESELECTION phases. 9.3 SCSI-2 Request for Interpretation #3 re: Exceptions during logging operations (90-111R1, -120R1) [Penokie] George Penokie presented the latest answer to his request for interpretation. Several revisions were made at the meeting resulting in a revision 3 document. George Penokie moved and Gene Milligan seconded that X3T9.2/90-120 R3 be forwarded to X3T9 as the technical recommended response for SCSI-2 Request for Interpretation #3 on exception procedures during logging operations. John asked that people with an interest in this issue come prepared to discuss data compression at the Austin working group meeting so that the discussion in December can be more productive. John also noted that Digital has voted against two X3B5 project proposals which include data compression on the grounds that data compression should not be defined by a media committee. Compression could apply equally to other media, such as that defined by X3B11. If a separate suitable committee is not found, then Digital suggested that these groups be listed as close or coordinating liaisons. 9.5 Additional SCSI Functions Resulting From a CHECK CONDITION (90-125) [Milligan] This topic was discussed at the Westminster working group. Jim McGrath (Quantum) postulated a scenario that could be problematic if the ARC bit is invoked by multiple initiators. Larry Lamers suggested that allowing CHECK CONDITION status as an ECA response may be desirable since most operating systems can handle CHECK CONDITIONs without timing out. BUSY status (which is currently the required status for ECAs) is easy to handle in hardware, since no sense data is required to be generated and returned. The debate on how long a device can be busy was re-visited; there was no resolution. 9.6 Proposal for Messages and Commands Supported Lists (90-126) [Milligan] Gene Milligan had no new inputs on this proposal. Gary Stephens suggested that the function was not really useful unless the commands returned bit maps of the supported fields in the CDBs. When faced with this level of complexity the group reverted to the original problem, which was to provide a status/control over whether the MODIFY DATA POINTER message is to be used. Gerry Houlder accepted an action item to develop a proposal to put such a bit in the Disconnect-Reconnect Mode Page. 10. New Business 10.1 Serial SCSI vs. Parallel SCSI Issues [Allan] The evolving consensus is that multi-porting and packetization should be part of the SCSI-3 Fiber Channel project. SCSI-3 Physical Layer (parallel) should focus on dual-porting, but not include the dynamic- pathing concept of multi-porting. Both physical layers would use the same command sets, although some extensions beyond SCSI-2 are required to fully support the increased address space in Fiber Channel (and 16- or 32-ID Wide SCSI). 10.2 Dual-ported SCSI (90-136R1) [Houlder] Gerry Houlder had no new input on his proposal. Bob Snively asked if a triple- or quadruple- ported devices could be built with this architecture. Currently, messages such as BUS DEVICE RESET OTHER PORT assume that there is a total of two ports. Also, the current proposal does not provide a port identifier. Port identifiers may be necessary if 3 or more ports are defined. The working group had viewed more than 2 ports as impractical given physical connector sizes and could not identify a market requirement. Gerry reported that someone asked that the BUS DEVICE RESET message reset all ports. The working group had restricted this message to only resetting the port on which it is received. To reset both ports requires a BUS DEVICE RESET OTHER PORT message followed by a BUS DEVICE RESET message. Bob Snively agreed with having BUS DEVICE RESET apply to all ports. People desiring changes and/or extensions to 90-136R1 were asked to submit written proposals. 10.3 SCSI-3 Cable Color Code Selection (90-137, -141, and -142) [Blackford, Grant, and Maezawa] Mike Wingard, Brian Griggs, and Bill Spence argued against standard color codes for SCSI round twisted-pair cables. Reasons cited included conflict with existing color codes used by cable assembly houses and little benefit for the effort required to get an agreement. Bill Spence offered a note specifying signal placement (with specifying the insulation color) as an alternative. Peter Blackford gave an overview of the current status of the Cable Working Group activities. Peter pointed out that the signal layout definition is more critical than the color code. Bob Bellino spoke in favor of adopting the Madison color code and pointed out that an IPI study had shown that the insulation color does have an effect on signal quality. Signals using black and red insulation had different propagation speeds than other colors (due to the differences in the dielectric of materials used for the color). By using different colors the cable skew could be improved from + 10% to + 5%. Bob also pointed out that the Madison color code has been adopted by IPI, HIPPI, and is widely used for SCSI cables. Having a consistent color code makes delivery of cable quicker and moderates the cost because large runs can be made of a standard cable core. The outer jacket is then added per the customer's specification. Bill Spence moved and Robert Kellert seconded that the SCSI signal wire color coding not be specified. The motion carried, 29 yes and 5 no. Bill Spence moved and Harlan Andrews seconded that a note in document 90- 160 as modified (below) be incorporated in SCSI-3 Physical. The motion carried, 29 yes and 1 no. The modified wording was: "For single-ended operation, cable assemblies incorporating shielded round, twisted-pair cable comprising a core surrounded by two or more layers of twisted pairs, the following principles shall be observed: (1) The REQ and ACK pairs shall be in the core. If there are more than two pairs in the core, the remainder shall contain ground pairs. (2) The data and parity pairs shall be in the outermost layers." 10.4 Outbound DISCONNECT Message interaction with TTD (90-133R1) [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer moved and George Penokie seconded that 90-133R1 be included in the SCSI-3 project. The motion carried, 26 yes and 0 no. 10.5 Review of new documents Single Ended Test Report No. 3 [90-157] (Spence) This document presented the T.I. test results of the Astro cable. This cable performs very similarly to the Madison Cable that was previously tested. REQ/ACK Signal Quality and Fast Single-ended [90-159] (Chan) Simulation and prototyping have shown that totem-pole single-ended drivers and receivers with increased hysteresis provide significant benefits to single-ended signal quality. Fast SCSI operation appears feasible. 10.6 Agenda for the Austin Working Group The following draft agenda was established for the Austin working group meeting: 1. Caching Proposal (90-021R2) [Milligan] 2. Diagnostic Command Set (90-103R1) [Pickford] {Wednesday a.m. tentative--Doug may not be able to attend.} 3. Data Compression Mode Page Proposal (90-119) [Krupa] 4. Packetized SCSI (90-132) [Stephens] 5. Parallel SCSI (90-133R3) [Stephens] 6. Extensions for dual port SCSI (90-136R1) [Houlder] 7. The motion carried, 39 yes, 0 no, 0 abstain, and 25 absent. 11. Review of Action Items 1. John Lohmeyer will submit the project proposal on SCSI Information Bulletins to X3T9. 2. John Lohmeyer will submit the draft response to SCSI-2 Request for Interpretation #3 to X3T9. 3. Adjournment The chairman said that the habit of some members attending the meeting just long enough to sign the attendance sheet has resulted in several motions requiring 2/3-thirds votes (and more importantly requiring 50% of the total membership to vote yes) to nearly fail in spite of unanimous or nearly unanimous votes of those present at the time of the vote. X3T9 discussed this problem at their last meeting and concluded that ANSI rules would not permit X3 to change its rules on these voting requirements. However, the X3 rules do not define what constitutes attendance. If the problem persists, the chairman intends to define X3T9.2 attendance as signing the attendance sheet AND being present for all roll call votes. He noted that this could result in some organizations losing their vote due to nonattendance if their attendance practices persist. The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 1990.
