Adjournment Minutes -- X3T9.2 Meeting #89 August 20-21, 1990 -- Boulder, CO 1. Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the chairman, called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m., Monday August 20, 1990. He thanked Dave Pfahler of Hughes for hosting and arranging the meeting, noting that this was the first meeting arranged by the host in several years. John also announced that SCSI-2 had been unanimously approved by X3 and was at the ANSI Board of Standards Review for ANSI approval. As is customary, the people attending introduced themselves. A copy of the X3T9.2 membership list was circulated for attendance and corrections. Copies of the draft agenda and the recent document register were made available to those attending. Information on X3T9.2 and Mailing Subscription Forms were made available. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the following additions: 3.2 Roccati request for non-attending Principal membership (90-122) 8.1.1 ESDI Editing Changes 9.4 Mixing 8- and 16-bit devices (90-048 R3) [Penokie] 10.9 Data Compression Mode Page Proposal (90-119) [Krupa] 10.10 Single-Ended Cable Analysis and Test Report (90-123, -124) [Spence] 10.11 SCSI Message Exception Handling [Cornaby] 3. Attendance and Membership The membership requirements were reviewed. X3 rules permit one vote per organization. An individual from a new organization must attend two consecutive plenary meetings. He/she may apply for voting membership the second meeting via a letter to the chairman of X3T9.2. The individual may vote at the second plenary meeting. Working group meetings do not count toward attendance requirements. The chairman indicated that since the last meeting, the following membership change had occurred: Jon Abilay has become an alternate member for Apple Computer. The Miniscribe membership was terminated because Maxtor bought Miniscribe and Maxtor is also a member. Laura Shellhamer's membership was also terminated because she had left the company. Thomas Marks became a new principal member for NEK/Helix Cable. Bob Simpson and Mike Yokoyama became the new principal and alternate for Sony. Jim Kubinec and Gary Arakaki re-joined on the second day of the meeting as the principal and alternate, respectively, for Advanced Micro Devices. The chairman said he had received a letter from Judith Bailey, Manager of Membership Services at the X3 Secretariat, enclosing the "Control Sheets" for X3T9.2. People who have not paid their 1990 Service Fees by September 1, 1990 will be dropped from the committee lists. Principals and Alternates who have not paid by then will lose their voting rights. The chairman read the names of the people who had not paid as of August 9, 1990. He advised these people to contact Ms. Bailey at 202-626-5747 if they believe they have paid. The chairman said he had received a separate list of people who are receiving committee mailings, but have not paid their subscription fees. He said these people will be dropped from the mailing list if they do not pay before the next mailing. In the future, the X3 Secretariat will not accept subscriptions prior to payment. The chairman read the names of people who had not paid by August 10, 1990 and advised them to contact Ms. Katrina Gray at 202-626-5741 if they have any questions concerning their mailing subscriptions. With the two terminations for non-attendance (see 3.1), X3T9.2 voting membership is now at 66 down from 67 organizations at the last meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees at the meeting. Enclosure (2) is the X3T9.2 membership changes since the last minutes and enclosure (3) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The chairman said he had sent 24 jeopardy letters to 9 organizations: Apple Computer, Congruent Software, DDC Pertec, Exabyte, LMS, Montrose Products Company, SMS Technology, Sony, and Storage Technology. The letters said that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended the August plenary meeting. The letters also informed these people of the committee's ability to retain their membership under special circumstances in spite of their failure to attend. Marge Bacis sent John a FAX saying Montrose had attended the December '89 meeting and John returned a FAX saying that he would correct his database, but that meeting had no bearing on their jeopardy situation. The letter to Steve Nester of SMS Technology, Inc. was returned marked: "Moved, Left No Address". Members were present from all of the organizations in jeopardy except DDC Pertec, and SMS Technology. The members from these organizations were changed to observer status. 3.2 Roccati request for non-attending Principal membership (90-122) The chairman said he had received a letter from Arnold Roccati of EG&G requesting non-attending principal membership in X3T9.2. X3T9 currently provides this class of membership for Arnold Roccati and for Bill Burr because of their long history of participation in X3T9 and its task groups. Both Arnold and Bill have budget problems which prevent them from attending meetings, but they wish to continue participation in absentia. They only vote on letter ballots and X3T9 does not count them in meeting votes. Arnold has requested the same membership status in X3T9.2 so that he can receive the task group mailings without paying the $250 per year observer fee -- he still pays the mailing fee, but the principal service fee would be waived since he is a principal member of X3T9. Gene Milligan moved and Bill Spence seconded that X3T9.2 request X3T9 to pursue a rule change that would permit either a principal or observer membership on the Task Groups for Technical Committee members without additional service fees. The motion passed 32 yes, 0 no, and 4 abstained. John Lohmeyer moved and George Hahn seconded that Arnold Roccati and Bill Burr be granted non-attending principal membership in X3T9.2 for calendar year 1991. These memberships will revert to normal attendance requirements should these people be replaced. Non-attending memberships will not be counted for meeting votes. The motioned passed 25 Yes, 4 No, and 7 Abstained. 4. Approval of Minutes - June Meeting Wichita, KS (X3T9.2/90-090) Gene Milligan requested that future minutes refrain from mentioning the presence of alcohol at meetings as was done in the CAM meeting report. The minutes were approved with the following changes: Section 8.1: Saied Zangenehpour's name was misspelled. Section 9.4: Gene Milligan actually said that he did not intend to revise this proposal until he completed his proposal on messages supported. Section 10.1: The two motions referencing foils should include the text from the foils. Section 10.1: In paragraph 2, change "affect of" to "effect on". 5. Document Distribution Due to two problems, the X3T9.3 and X3T9.5 task groups will be assessed an additional charge for their 1990 mailings. The X3 Secretariat set their 1990 subscription fees too low because the January 1990 mailing costs were not included in the 1989 budget. Also, the T9.3 and T9.5 mailings have been significantly larger than estimated. The X3T9.2 page counts have been running significantly below estimate (63%) so no surcharge is planned. Members who have any problems with their mailing subscription should deal directly with Katrina at (202) 626-5741. John Lohmeyer requested that all documents for the next mailing be sent to him by September 10, 1990. The following new or revised documents were distributed and/or discussed at the meeting: Document Doc Date Author Description of Document ------------- -------- --------------- --------------------------------------- X3T9.2/90-48 5/9/90 G. Liaison Reports 6.1 ISO [Milligan] Gene Milligan said that nothing new affecting X3T9.2 had occurred since the last meeting. After the meeting, Gene provided the following report which he also gave to X3T9: The IR has recently received through various channels the following ISO related documents of interest: ANSI Procedures for Synchronization of the National and International Standards Review and Approval Processes dated 15 January 1990 (X3T90/-069). The procedure has four parts. Upon realization that an international project will be a candidate for an American National Standard, the US TAG is responsible to issue an ANSI Project Initiation Notification System (PINS) Input Form. I assume a FDDI ISP is not contemplated as a US standard. This would initiate an ANSI two month public review on the Committee Draft (CD - was DP). Another two month public review would occur with the DIS. If the DIS completes without substantive changes a BSR-9 consensus form is generated. If substantive changes have occurred a BSR-8 form initiates another two month public review followed by a BSR-9 form. SC 25 N10, 5 April is a comment from BSI that the Danish ACOS proposal is mainly a compilation of existing standards and should not be pursued. The comment further urged that no new work on safety of home electronic systems be undertaken until a review of existing safety standards shows that they are inadequate. ANSI responded to the Chair of X3's concern on public review of new work items by stating that development work can be initiated in parallel with the public review. The response seems to contemplate that the public review comments would be for changes as opposed to objection of the work item. ISO/IEC JTC 1 N 795, 23 April, letter ballot for NWI Standard for Generic Customer Premises Cabling which closes 31 August. ISO/IEC JTC 1 N 793, 25 April, letter ballot for NWI Standard for Fibre Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) - Hybrid Ring Control (HRC) which closes 31 August. ANSI transmitted a 11 April letter from Dr. Christian J. Favre, Deputy Secretary-General of ISO to all ISO Member Bodies. The letter requests a strict policy on not accepting votes received more than 7 days after the closing date for the letter ballot. Any such very late votes will be returned with a reminder of the procedure. Comments accompanying the late vote will be forwarded to the appropriate secretariat for consideration. However member bodies can request a one month extension with justification of sound factual motives. ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 25 N 575, 2 May, transmitted an update of the SC 25 January meeting schedule. WG 4 meets 7 through 10 January. the SC 25 plenary meets on 11 and 12 January. The Secretariat drafting committee meets 10 through 12 January. Reservations for the meeting are being made by the IEC. Judy Anderson will provide us confirmation of the reservations. The suggested following meeting time for the SC 25 grouping is 27 May through 7 June 1992. ISO/IEC JTC 1 N 574, 2 May, was erroneously distributed to WG 4. It should have been distributed to WG 1. Keith Brannon sent a 4 May letter to Floyd Ross noting that the FDDI PMD was good enough to publish when he receives the secretariat's final report. A 28 May letter from Dr. Kovacs confirms that the IPI-2 Tape DIS letter ballot closed on 19 February and that he would follow up on why results had not been received from the ISO Central Secretariat. ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6 N 6028 announces the publication of ISO/IEC 8073:1988 Technical Corrigendum 3:1990 - OSI Connection oriented transport protocol specification. X3 distributed a request X3/90-1491, in amongst junk mail, dated 25 June and due 17 August that the committee chairs identify the equivalence between ANSI and ISO standards. The equivalence was to be labeled Identical (I), Technically Equivalent (E), Partly Equivalent (P), and Related (R). Don Tolmie issued a request that X3T9.3 find an ISO project editor for IPI-3 Communications or withdraw the proposal from ISO. They were to address this issue at the August meeting. Del Shoemaker issued accelerated X3T9 letter ballots for approval of NWIs for HIPPI-PH and FDDI-HRC. The letter ballots closed 20 July. ISO/IEC JTC 1 N 913 circulated a letter ballot to approve the title and area of work for SC 25. The letter ballot closes 2 November. ANSI distributed, 18 July, new ANSI Procedures for U.S. Participation in the International Standards Activities of the ISO which were approved 26 March. The EIA issued letter ballots for approval of NWI's for HPPI PH, FDDI HRC, Standard for Generic Customer Premises Cabling, and Guides for Generic Customer Premises Cabling. Based upon X3T9's guidance, the IR submitted four approvals along with the comment noting the HP Trademark impact and requests to add X3T9 to the liaison list. The IR faxed, 28 July, a request to the X3 Secretariat, copying the EIA, ANSI, and SC 25 requesting that the attached proposal for a NWI for the FDDI SMF-PMD be processed. He also faxed a request to Dr. Kovacs that the final report for DIS 9314-3 FDDI PMD be communicated to the iSO Central Secretariat. The IR cited the prior documents which had given the disposition of the various comments. X3 has distributed, 31 July to X3S3, DIS 8802-5.2 Token Ring access method and physical layer specifications with an X3 deadline of 21 August. X3 has also distributed, 31 July to X3S3, DIS 10173 ISDN primary access connector at reference points S and T with an X3 deadline of 12 November. X3 has announced that the letter ballot for a NWI for Editorial Changes to ISO 8802-2 LAN LLC passed 34:0:0:5. The proposed US response was Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, No, No, and No. They also announced that the letter ballot for a NWI for Add Layer Management Section to ISO 8802-3 LAN CSMA/CD passed 36:0:0:3. ANSI has issued a JTC 1 TAG letter ballot to approve the appointment or reappointment of: W.H. Stokes as chairman of SC 17, Professor Popovic as chairman of SC 25, C. Jahl as chairman of SC 27, L. Lauri as chairman of SC 28, and J. Cote as chairman of SC 7. The letter ballot closes at high noon 6 September. Dr. Kovacs sent the IR a letter responding to his inquiries. He agreed to expedite the FDDI PMD final report. To aid in the finalization he requested a copy of the final document. Floyd Ross has promptly sent him the requested copy. He noted that the transition of secretariats and the vacation of Mr. Barth has caused some delays. The IPI-2 Tape letter ballot closed with 15 of 17 members in favor. The other two did not vote. The ISO Central Secretariat's 3 March report noted that comments were attached and requested disposition of the comments by 22 July. Dr. Kovacs will ask Mr. Barth for copies of the comments upon his return from vacation. X3 has issued, 8 August, a letter ballot to approve the recommended NWI FDDI SMF-PMD for submittal to SC 25. This letter ballot closes at high noon 10 September. Dennis Trupski asked if SCSI-2 rev 10c was in the ISO format yet. John gave a brief update on the status of the SCSI-2 editing. He stated that January 1991 was the target. A copy of the translated document will be made available to the committee members for review. John had a limited quantity of the figures for people to review. The ISO DIS letter ballot on SCSI-2 is pending until the document is in the ISO style and format. 6.2 IT8 [Lohmeyer] There was nothing new to report. 6.3 SCSI-2 Common Access Method Committee Report [Allan] Dal Allan reported. Two meetings have been held since the last plenary. The first was not attended by Microsoft and IBM turned up late in the meeting. In open discussion, the members in attendance complained that neither company had delivered on their promises of DOS and OS/2 support for SCSI. The Unix and Novell users were pleased with the CAM XPT/SIM, and wanted to go ahead and finish at the Toronto meeting August 29-30, 1990. The DOS and OS/2 descriptions were removed from the draft. The second meeting was dedicated to OS/2, and Microsoft sent an attendee who provided new information and an explanation of the LADDR philosophy. LADDR is generic and much broader in scope than CAM as it covers any I/O, not just SCSI I/O. By focusing on the SCSI driver, it was possible to make the data structure common between LADDR and CAM. Shuffling of fields in both were required, but changes to the contents were minimal. The CAM structure is supported by Unix and Novell, with Apple also in favor of it. However, compatibility with OS/2 is more political than practical. IBM did not attend the second meeting at which there were many questions, especially on licensing. The CAM Committee sent a list of questions to IBM, asking for clarification on some essential issues. In a reversal of the prior meeting, the CAM committee decided to return DOS to the XPT/SIM draft using 4Fh as the CAM interrupt. The next meeting on OS/2 and DOS is being hosted by Microsoft in Seattle, October 2-3, 1990. The CAM XPT/SIM project proposal has been revised by SPARC, which deleted the sentence saying no legal problems were expected. The letter ballot closes September 7, 1990. The CAM ATA project proposal has been revised by SPARC, which deleted the sentence saying no legal problems were expected. The letter ballot closes September 7, 1990. The latest ATA draft is Rev 2.2, which includes some minor corrections recommended by Western Digital to address BIOS incompatibilities with major vendors. 6.4 Fiber Channel [Allan] Dal Allan reported. Two working groups have met since the last plenary. The primary purpose was to review the FC-2 protocol draft from cover to cover to make sure it was consistent and to make sure all people have a common understanding of the document. Of the three classes of service supported, the datagram definition is still somewhat muddy. John Lohmeyer added for the benefit of those not familiar with the history of Fiber Channel that the fiber protocols are also intended for use on copper. This may have a more immediate impact on SCSI applications. 6.5 Small Form Factor Group [Allan] Dal Allan reported that there was sufficient industry interest to form a committee, as 15 companies have become members. This is a vendor- dominated committee, primarily drive suppliers and connector manufacturers. There is only one OEM, Sun Microsystems. A mailing subscription is available for those interested in knowing what is going on. Contact Dal Allan at (408) 867-6630 for information. The first meeting of the SFF Committee was to be held at the Red Lion Inn in San Jose, CA on August 27, 1990 beginning at 9:00 am. 7. Review of Old Action Items 1. John Lohmeyer will write a letter requesting SMC clarify the termination procedures and provide guidelines regarding termination exceptions. John said he had forgotten this action item, but he intended to complete it before the next meeting -- Carry over. 2. John Lohmeyer will draft a project proposal for SCSI-3 Physical. Complete (see 90-105). 3. Larry Lamers will incorporate the reserve/release, the write protect bit, and the DPOFUA bit clarifications into the SCSI-2 document during the final editing. Carry over. 8. Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 8.1 ESDI [Allan] Dal Allan reported that the ESDI editing had gone much more smoothly than he had expected based on his previous experiences with IPI. He had performed the text editing into ISO format using WordStar (tm) and the ANSI Editor had done the style editing using other tools. At the conclusion of the style editing, the ANSI Editor had provided the files to Larry Lamers who converted them back to WordStar (tm). This enabled Larry and Dal to electronically compare them for unintended changes or incorrect changes (which sometimes resulted from improving the English). 8.1.1 ESDI Editing Changes In editing the ESDI standard, Dal Allan and the June ESDI ad hoc group had realized that inconsistent wording had been used. The Diagnostic Parameters were called Command Subscripts elsewhere in the document. As the document would be clearer if these bits were consistently called Command Subscripts, Table 28, Diagnostic Parameter Bits, had to be deleted because it merely related Diagnostic Parameters to the Command Subscripts. Dal made these changes in the interest of improving the document. Harvey Rosenfeld, the ANSI Editor, requested a letter from John Lohmeyer confirming that the change was non-substantive. John sent him a FAX as requested. However, Beth Somerville at ANSI was concerned that CBEMA was not informed about the change. She has requested an investigation and will put ESDI on hold unless CBEMA confirms that the change is editorial. This is actually an X3T9 issue, but John Lohmeyer requested that X3T9.2 advise X3T9 on the technical vs. non-technical aspect of the change. John Lohmeyer moved and Dal Allan seconded that X3T9.2 advise X3T9 that the ESDI editing changes to delete Table 28 and to revise section 7.12 are editorial and make no substantive changes to the document. The motioned passed 31 Yes, 0 No, and 2 Abstained. 8.2 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/90-114) A working group meeting was held July 10-11, 1990 in Rochester, MN hosted by IBM. There were 24 people present. Doug Pickford's persistence paid off as the group finally made real progress of the SCSI disk testing issue. More work is needed, but the group has reach the point of working constructively instead of arguing. The group agreed with Brian Earle's opinion on both of his Requests for Interpretation. John Lohmeyer agreed to draft responses. There was considerable interest over a proposal from Erik Jessen that would define a new differential driver/receiver alternative, using less power and remaining compatible with existing differential devices. This could result in single-chip differential implementations. George Penokie exposed a problem with defect list lengths exceeding 64 k bytes. His 90-110 document proposes a solution. George Penokie also previewed a Request for Interpretation that he planned to submit concerning exception conditions during logging operations. 8.3 Cable Specification Working Group Meeting (X3T9.2/90-115) [Lamers] Kurt Chan presented his study on how the location of the REQ/ACK signals affected crosstalk. A preliminary cable specification was put together for 50-conductor cable. The group intends to work on color-coding schemes and look at 68-conductor cables at the next meeting. The next meeting is September 5, 1990, in Westminister, CO at the Ramada Inn beginning at 1:00 p.m. 9. Old Business 9.1 Additional SCSI Caching Control (X3T9.2/90-021R2) [Milligan] Gene Milligan had just completed his proposal on supported messages and commands (90-126). He wanted to wait until 90-126 is discussed before revising 90-21R2 any further. 9.2 Initiator Control of Reconnection (90-62R4) [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer reported that revision 4 of his proposal is substantially the same as revision 2 which was accepted at the June meeting. He had prepared revision 3 for the working group meeting in hopes of resolving the performance issue which Gerry Houlder had raised in 90-83. Revision 3 introduced the idea of permitting a TTD message to be used in a subsequent connection for those designs that would incur major overhead with this message being sent during the initial connection of every I/O Process. The working group rejected the idea, favoring protocol simplicity. Revision 4 also clarifies that it is illegal to send a CONTINUE I/O PROCESS message on an initial connection. John Lohmeyer moved and Bill Spence seconded that document 90-62R4 be accepted as the method of providing initiator control of reselection order for SCSI-3. The motioned passed 26 Yes, 0 No, and 0 Abstained. George Penokie raised a question on what does a target do if it receives an outbound DISCONNECT message after a TTD message has been received. John Lohmeyer agreed to draft a proposal describing the interaction of these two messages. 9.3 Alternative SCSI Differential Transceivers [Jessen] Erik Jessen was not present. Chuck Micalizzi of Emulex requested that all parties interested in the alternative differential transceivers contact himself or Erik Jessen of Western Digital. They are planning to host as meeting September 19, 1990 in Orange Co., CA on this topic. 9.4 Mixing 8- and 16-bit devices (90-048 R3) [Penokie] A problem can occur when mixing 8- and 16-bit devices during SELECTION and RESELECTION phases. An 8-bit device does not drive the upper data bits (8-15) or the upper parity bit. A 16-bit device will consequently see a parity error on the upper data byte during SELECTION and RESELECTION phases when an 8-bit device has won arbitration. George Penokie had prepared the changed pages only to his 90-48R2 proposal to add a sentence saying it is permissible to ignore such parity errors. Tony Kozlowski said that this solution would allow certain errors to be ignored that could be detected. This prompted George to get a foil and marker and start enumerating the cases. The problem is complicated by the single-initiator option in SCSI-1. The result of the discussion that ensued was to restrict single-initiator option to the lower 8 bits and to attempt to detect as many other errors as possible. George planned to prepare another revision of his proposal to document the discussion. 10. New Business 10.1 SCSI-2 Request for Interpretation #1 re: Sequential-Access Partition Descriptors (90-98) John Lohmeyer reviewed the procedures the task group must follow in addressing Requests for Interpretation. Brian Earle of Eventide submitted the Request for Interpretation after encountering differing implementations of the Partition Size Descriptors from several vendors. Some implementations include partition zero in the size descriptors and others do not. Partition zero is the default data partition as stated in the model for sequential-access devices. Partitions one and up are usually defined as particular sizes with partition zero containing the remaining medium. Apparently, some vendors felt that inappropriate to return a size descriptor for partition zero since it could vary significantly depending on recording format, block size, medium size, etc. However, the committee felt that several references in SCSI-2 require the partition size descriptors to include partition zero. The most-direct reference is in 9.3.3.2. Another point is that the MODE SELECT page length must not be changed from the value returned by the MODE SENSE command (7.3.3). This effectively means that the target must include space in the Medium Partition Pages for the maximum number of supported partitions. It cannot do so unless the size descriptor of the required partition zero is returned. Several additional points were raised during the discussion of this topic. An ad hoc group was assigned to meet after the plenary meeting recessed on Monday evening to revise the draft response. During the discussion of this item, several related points concerning the size of partitions were discussed. Some of these need to be addressed during the development of SCSI-3. Ed Young moved and Robert Simpson seconded that X3T9.2/90-116 R1 be forwarded to X3T9 as the technical recommended response for SCSI-2 Request for Interpretation #1 on sequential-access partition descriptors. He recommended that this be consider a Class A interpretation. It was brought up that there may exist a problem in the DAT tape format standard and X3B5 should be made aware of this. Larry Lamers moved and Ed Young seconded that X3T9.2/90-117 R0 be forwarded to X3T9 as the technical recommended response for SCSI-2 Request for Interpretation #2 on sequential-access recorded object identifiers. The chairman requested that HP and Sony provide documentation on their reasons for voting "No" for the X3T9 meeting on Friday. (Chairman's Note: No documentation was received prior to the X3T9 meeting.) 10.3 SCSI-2 Request for Interpretation #3 re: Exceptions during logging operations (90-111, -120) [Penokie] George Penokie explained his reasons for requesting an interpretation and he gave an overview of the response he had drafted (90-120). There was lengthy discussion and several people felt that they needed more time to contemplate the problem. Doug Pickford stated that the TSD bit should have a description added. The consensus was that this mostly likely will be a Class C response. RFI #3 was remanded to the working group for further consideration. A formal vote was planned for the October plenary meeting. 10.4 SCSI-3 Physical Project Proposal (90-105R1) [Lohmeyer] John Lohmeyer presented a draft Project Proposal for a SCSI-3 Physical Level project. He explained that this standard would include only the physical layer. It was limited in scope with the intention of getting 16-bit single-cable documented as quickly as possible. Gene Milligan questioned explicitly saying a new connector would be selected. John Lohmeyer replied that he had included this item since a new connector would be necessary if the L cable is accepted and smaller form factor devices might require still smaller connectors. Nonetheless, removing this item does not preclude the addition of connector(s), so it was removed. The references to "SCSI-1 and SCSI-2" in section 2.2 were changed to "SCSI". Bill Spence moved and George Hahn seconded X3T9.2/90-105 R2 be forwarded to X3T9 for further processing as the project proposal for a SCSI-3 Physical Level standard. The motion passed 40 yes, 0 no, and 26 not present. 10.5 Defect list length exceeding 64kb (90-110) [Penokie] George Penokie moved and Gene Milligan seconded that 90-110 R1 be accepted for inclusion in SCSI-3 for direct-access devices. The motion passed 33 yes and 0 no. 10.6 Standards referenced in the SCSI-2 CD-ROM Section (90-118) [Boulay] Paul Boulay presented the new CD-ROM standards that replace the private documents referenced in SCSI-2. Paul Boulay moved and Bill Spence seconded that the project editor be directed to modify the SCSI-2 CD-ROM section to: 1) replace all references to the Philips-Sony Red book with IEC 908; 2) replace all references to the Philips-Sony Yellow book with ISO/IEC 10149; and 3) add ISO 3901 where appropriate as a reference for ISRC. The committee asserts that this is an editorial change only and not a technical change. The motion passed 33 yes and 0 no. 10.7 Review of new documents Additional SCSI Functions Resulting From a CHECK CONDITION (90-125) [Milligan] Gene Milligan gave an introduction to his document. There was some controversy over the Automatic Reservation on CHECK CONDITION (ARC) bit. Larry Lamers contended that this function already exists in the form of Extended Contingent Allegiance. Gene countered that some customers do not like long periods of BUSY status and would prefer RESERVATION CONFLICT status. Consideration of this document was remanded to the September working group. Proposal for Messages and Commands Supported Lists [Milligan] (90-126) Gene Milligan prepared this document at the request of the May working group. It provides a mechanism for determining which messages and commands are supported by a target. The document was remanded to the September working group for consideration. 16-bit Connector Retention and 32-bit Physical Layer Thoughts [Chan] (90- 127 R0) Kurt said that the P cable, being bigger and heavier, needs a jackscrew retention mechanism instead of clips. The proposal was remanded to the working group for consideration. 10.8 Agenda for the Boulder Working Group The following draft agenda was established for the Boulder working group meeting: 1. Caching Proposal (90-021R2) [Milligan] 2. Diagnostic Command Set (90-103) [Pickford] {Wednesday a.m.} 3. Packetized SCSI (89-130R1) [Stephens] 4. Multi-ported SCSI (89-133R1) [Stephens] 5. 16/32-bit cable issues (90-48R3) [Penokie] (90-127) [Chan] 6. Reduced Common-Mode Range on Differential SCSI (90-092) [Jessen] 7. SCSI-2 Request for Interpretation #3 re: Exceptions during logging operations (90-111R1, -120) [Penokie] 8. SCSI Message Exception Handling (90-128) [Cornaby] 9. Additional SCSI Functions Resulting From a CHECK CONDITION (90-125) [Milligan] 10. Proposal for Messages and Commands Supported Lists [Milligan] (90- 126) 11. Message Handling during reconnection [Houlder] 10.9 Data Compression Mode Page Proposal (90-119) [Krupa] Kurt Chan briefly described the document and background of the proposal. Kurt indicated that an appropriate person from HP would attend the October working group. The proposal was remanded to the October working group meeting for consideration. 10.10 Single-Ended Cable Analysis and Test Report (90-123, -124) [Spence] Bill Spence presented the results of his analysis and testing of single- ended SCSI. The analysis highlights the need to use the Alternative 2 termination on systems where the terminator power is not tightly regulated. His testing demonstrated reliable operation on cables significantly exceeding the maximum SCSI cable length specification (69 feet vs. 6 meters). Bill had tested two cables, 3M pleated foil and Madison 4099 twisted pair. Both cables had good signal quality. Bill request other cable manufacturers to provide cables for him to test. Bill stated that he believes single-ended SCSI could operate at "fast SCSI" transfer rates given good cables and proper system implementation. 10.11 SCSI Message Exception Handling [Cornaby] (90-128 R0) Steve Cornaby made a pitch for a high-speed message system without exceptions to reduce on-bus time. Steve acknowledged that on-bus time could also be reduced via faster protocol logic, but contended that his solution is less expensive. Steve's proposal would achieve a result similar to Gary Stephens' NEXUS IN/OUT proposal in that message processing would be deferred until all message bytes are received. The proposal was remanded to the September working group for consideration. 11. Review of Action Items 1. John Lohmeyer will write a letter requesting SMC clarify the termination procedures and provide guidelines regarding termination exceptions. 2. Larry Lamers will incorporate the reserve/release, the write protect bit, and the DPOFUA bit clarifications into the SCSI-2 document during the final editing. 3. John Lohmeyer will request X3T9 to pursue a rule change that would permit either a principal or observer membership on the Task Groups for Technical Committee members without additional service fees. 4. John Lohmeyer will advise X3T9 that the ESDI changes to delete Table 28 and to revise section 7.12 are editorial and make no substantive changes to the document. 5. John Lohmeyer will draft a description of the interaction of outbound DISCONNECT and TTD messages. 6. John Lohmeyer will revise the June minutes and post them on the SCSI BBS. 12. Meeting Schedule The next meeting of X3T9.2 will be October 15-16, 1990 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, FL (305) 527-2700 hosted by Boeing Computer Services. Please mention X3T9 when making reservations to receive the group room rate of $80.00 single/double/twin, plus 9% tax. The cut-off date for reservations is September 14, 1990. The plenary meeting schedule is: Date Location Host -------------------- ------------------------ --------------------- October 15-16, 1990 Ft. The SCSI working group meeting will start at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The SCSI Cable Specification working group meeting will start at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, after the SCSI working group meeting. 12.2 Financing Plenary Meetings X3T9 has not had a problem so far in finding hosts for upcoming meetings. So the pressure to finance meetings through meeting fees is off, at least temporarily. Larry Lamers used this agenda item to discuss the idea of collecting funds to pay for document editors. He stated that SCSI-3 is being delayed because he must spend his time editing SCSI-2. Del Shoemaker said that SMC is willing to consider funds collection for specific purposes on a case-by-case basis. Most likely SMC will require a bonded treasurer. Payment of the fee cannot be made a requirement to receive mailings or to vote (that is, it cannot be included in the subscription fee nor the service fee). John Lohmeyer lamented the lack of an enforcement mechanism. 13. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 1990.
