X3T9.2/90-040 March 1, 1990 Mr. Brian A. Berg Berg Software Design P.O. Box 3488 Saratoga, CA 95070 Subject: Response to BSR X3.131-198x (SCSI-2) Public Review Comments #7 and #8 Dear Mr. Berg, Thank you for your interest in the SCSI-2 draft proposed standard. The X3T9.2 committee has reviewed your public review comments (X3T9.2/90-024 and -027) suggesting several editorial improvements to the SCSI-2 standard. The committee plans to deal with your comments as follows: 1. The command name inconsistencies in Table I-2 will be corrected. 2. The three missing operation codes in Table I-2 will be added. 3. The naming inconsistency regarding the FORMAT, RESERVE, and RELEASE commands and the FORMAT UNIT, RESERVE UNIT, and RELEASE UNIT commands is intended. The RESERVE and RELEASE commands optionally may reserve extents within a unit. The RESERVE UNIT and RELEASE UNIT commands only operate on entire units. A FORMAT UNIT command affects the entire logical unit of a direct-access device, while the concept of formatting a printer "unit" really does not apply -- the printer format operation only applies until changed. Therefore, the committee feels that these names should not be changed. 4. The column headings in Table I-2 (and in the other multiple page tables) will be repeated on each page during the final editing of this standard. 5. The committee will request that the technical editor consider adding section numbers to Table I-2, but it may not be feasible -- some commands are described in several sections. Also note that section number information is present in the alphabetic tables in sections 7.2 through 17.2. 6. Notes will be added explaining that the ASC and ASCQ information is available in both numeric and alphabetic order. 7. The "Suggested Related Sense Key" information was intentionally dropped from SCSI-2 after considerable debate. It was felt that such recommendations may induce an implementor to select the recommended sense key in spite of the fact that another sense key is more appropriate for the particular situation. 8. Each command set section already includes a table listing the commands for that device type in alphabetical order (see 7.2 through 17.2). These tables include section numbers. Therefore, repeating Table I-2 in alphabetical order is not necessary. Please send a written statement to the X3 Secretariat (Attn: Lynn Barra) within fifteen working days saying whether you accept or reject this response. If you do not respond within fifteen working days, the Secretariat will assume that you have withdrawn the comment. Sincerely Yours, Del Shoemaker, X3T9 Chairman cc: L. Barra, X3 Secretariat J.
