Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the Chairman, called the meeting to order at 9:00 am, Monday October 12, 1987. He thanked the host, Bob Dugan of IBM, and Classic Consulting for arranging the comfortable meeting site. He also thanked Bob Snively of Adaptec for making the last mailing. Each of the attendees introduced themselves and stated their organization affiliation. The membership list was circulated to indicate attendance and for corrections. A paper containing general information on X3T9.2 was distributed to each new attendee. 2. Approval of Agenda The draft agenda was approved with the addition of item 3.1, "Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy". 3. Attendance and Membership Membership requirements were reviewed. David M. Barnum of Burndy became a new principal member at the meeting. Heinz Piorunneck is the alternate member for Burndy. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees for the meeting. Enclosure (2) is the changes to the X3T9.2 membership list and enclosure (3) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 3.1 Roll Call of Members in Jeopardy The Chairman stated that he had sent jeopardy letters to all representatives of the following twelve organizations: AMPRO Computers, Inc., Apple Computer, Applied Microsystems Corp., DEST Corporation, Eastman Kodak Co., Northern Telecom, Inc., Peripheral Technology Inc., RODIME LTD., Standard Micro Systems, Storage Technology Corp., Tandem Computer Inc., and Xebec. The letters indicated that these organizations had failed to attend two of the last three plenary meetings and that their membership would be terminated unless they attended the October plenary meeting. Representatives from the following organizations were present: Apple Computer, Eastman Kodak Co., Northern Telecom Inc., and Storage Technology. The remaining organizations were terminated (that is, changed to Observer status). 4. Approval of Minutes - Aug Meeting Colorado Springs (X3T9.2/87-135) There were two corrections noted: 1) The references to a joint meeting with X3T9.3 should be changed in that the minutes only record the X3T9.2 meeting. 2) Section 11.6 should read "is no longer". The minutes were approved with the noted corrections. The corrected minutes will not be re-distributed, however, they will be available on the SCSI BBS. 5. Liaison Reports 5.1 ISO John Lohmeyer reported that an ISO TC 97/SC 13 meeting had been held September 21-24, 1987 in San Jose, CA. Delegations from Denmark, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and the USA attended. The USA delegation included Del Shoemaker, John Lohmeyer, Dal Allan, Bill Burr, Gene Milligan, Floyd Ross, and Gary Robinson. The draft international standard on SCSI is known as DIS 9316. It is currently in letter ballot at TC 97 and the ballot closes January 30, 1988. The German and Japanese delegations submitted some editorial comments on DIS 9316 which the USA delegation agreed to incorporated during the final editing. The Japanese delegation also submitted some technical comments on SCSI-2. Since the USA has not yet submitted SCSI-2 to SC 13, the USA delegation agreed to consider the Japanese comments in X3T9.2 (see X3T9.2/87-168). Bill Burr is the technical editor for the ISO SCSI Standard. SC 13 agreed to request a new work item for ESDI and, if approved, to accept the American ESDI draft proposed standard as a draft proposal upon its approval by X3T9. ISO had some problems with the quality of the figures in the draft flexible disk standard. Gary Robinson has revised these figures and will resubmit the document along with some editorial corrections requested by the German delegation. The next meeting of ISO TC 97/SC 13 is the first week of October 1988 in Tokyo. 6. Joint Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 6.1 ESDI The revised document (Rev 1.4) with change bars was available at the meeting. Some optical material was moved to the Appendix. During the meeting, Gene Milligan noted a number of minor changes that were needed in the document. Dal Allan agreed to revise the document creating revision 2.0. The files were to be placed on the SCSI BBS when available. 6.1.1 Forwarding Motion Dal Allan moved and Jeff Stai seconded that ESDI revision 2.0 be forwarded to X3T9 for further processing. The comments received as a result of the X3T9.2 and X3T9.3 distribution, which resulted in revision 1.4 (complete with change bars), and Gene Milligan's subsequent editorial comments on revision 1.4 have been addressed and incorporated. Some people were concerned that this document was not distributed prior to the meeting. John Lohmeyer volunteered to attach any persons comments to his ballot at X3T9 to insure that their voices are heard. Separate Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 9.1 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/87-153) (10:30 AM Tuesday) A general working group meeting was held in Wichita August 31 through September 2, 1987. The following agenda items were identified by the working group as requiring plenary attention: 9.1.1 Command Queuing/Error Recovery Locking (87-59 R4) Bob Snively moved and Jim McGrath seconded that document X3T9.2/87- 59 R4 be incorporated into the SCSI-2 R3 document. The motion carried: 27 in favor; 0 opposed. Bob will investigate downward compatibility of targets not supporting command queuing with initiators supporting command queuing. The issue was raised by Dave Skinner. 9.1.2 Target/LUN Differentiation (87-127, 87-149) Bob Snively has accepted an action item to prepare a proposal on addressing targets separately from LUNs. 9.1.3 Standard TEST UNIT READY responses (87-147) Bob Snively moved and Gary Stephens seconded that X3T9.2/87-147 R1 be incorporated in SCSI-2 R3. The motion carried: 24 in favor, 0 opposed. Jim Semenak questioned why the additional sense code "LU has not self-configured yet" is not included in the proposal. This issue needs further investigation. 9.1.4 Programmable SCSI operating mode (87-137 R1) Several issues were raised concerning targets that change their operating mode upon loading their firmware from media that may not be immediately ready. There was also some concern about multiple initiator environments that may attempt to operate in multiple modes. The issues were remanded to the working group. 9.1.5 SYNC DATA TRANSFER REQUEST proposal (87-154) This proposal was remanded to the working group for further study. 9.1.6 Product Serial Number location (87-127) Where does it belong? Bob Snively made a straw motion that the INQUIRY data have serial number removed and it be added to VPD data only. 13 in favor, 3 opposed. The working group should take this as a direction and proceed with godspeed to resolution. 10. Old Business 10.1 Wide SCSI/High-Density Connector (9:00 - 10:30 AM Tuesday) Gerry Marazas introduced the connector discussions. He stated that a consensus on one connector had not been reached at the working group meeting on Monday. Furthermore he indicated that at least two more working group meetings would be needed. The first of these is scheduled for November 18-19, 1987 beginning at 1:00 pm in Santa Clara. The second meeting is scheduled for December 7, 1987 to coincide with the first day of next plenary meeting. Bill Bamford of Molex gave a presentation on ribbon style connectors. Hirose Electric, T&B, Molex, 3M, Steward, and Burndy support this type connector. There are four different versions of this connector. The manufacturers have committed to developing a single connector type if the ribbon type is picked. Bill Spence asked about the availability of daisy chain versions of the connectors. Ed Reynolds of AMP gave a presentation on pin & socket connectors. AMP, Fujitsu & Honda support this type. The preferred designation is "tab and receptacle". He stated that these connectors are smaller than a similar conductor-count ribbon-style connector and require less board space. Some ribbon-style manufacturers disputed this assertion. All three "tab and receptacle" manufacturers have inter-mating connectors. There are no restrictions on others making these connectors. An alignment shroud is available for blind mating. Electro-static discharge is a point of disagreement between the two camps. The tab and receptacle camp claims better electrostatic discharge (ESD) characteristics than the ribbon-style connectors offer. There was disagreement. Dal Allan requested that test data on ESD be made available at the next meeting. Tolerances in the ribbon-style connector can add up causing mis- mating of contacts. This point was disputed by the ribbon camp. Ed claims there are five manufacturers of the tab and receptacle type of connector. Representatives from Hirose stated that they make both styles of connectors, but for larger sizes, beyond 50 pins, they prefer the ribbon-style connectors. Jeff Stai assembled a list of items which need specific answers in order for the committee to make a decision: Daisy chain capability? Does it support ribbon cable? Does it support round cable? Is it surface mountable? What space/volume requirements are there? What are the bandwidth limitations? What wire sizes are supported? What are the RFI characteristics? What are the ESD characteristics? Is it gas tight? What are the vibration characteristics? What are the impedance characteristics? Are diecast parts available? What locking methods are used? What is the retention force? What are the dimensional tolerances? Backpanel clearance? What is the availability? Multiple sources? What is assembly the procedure? Tool costs? How many mating cycles? Gerry Marazas stated that the connector working group is asking the plenary for guidance in connector selection criteria. Bill Spence commented that his company has a strong preference for ribbon-style connectors unless there is overwhelming evidence for the other type. Steve Goldman stated a concern with the ability to easily build cables with current connectors on one end and the new style connectors on the other end. Dave McIntyre suggested that the plenary should give the connector working group the predisposition of the committee at this time. Straw votes were taken with the results that the vast majority of the plenary favors the selection of only one high-density connector. Furthermore, approximately half of those voting favored the ribbon-style connector and the remainder did not have a preference on the style. Dal Allan requested a 'user-group' attend the connector working group and make a report to the plenary meeting. Representatives from Unisys, SMS, TI, Sun, Western Digital, AT&T, Adaptec, Hewlett- Packard, Datacopy, and IBM have volunteered as the group. Gene Milligan gave a presentation on a connection scheme that doubles the number of contacts in the existing Shielded Alternative 2 connector by halving the contact spacing (reference X3T9.2/87- 169). This would allow 16-bit wide operation using one cable. It is intended that a device using this connector could correctly operate in both an 8-bit, 50-contact environment and a 16-bit, 100- contact environment. Some disadvantages listed included the need for a new terminator and the need to configure all 8-bit devices at one end of the cable. 10.2 Review of SCSI-2 Draft Document (X3T9.2/86-109 Rev 2) (Monday) (Starting with Optical Section -- See also: X3T9.2/87-146) The review started with Paul Boulay's comments in 87-166. Item 4 caused an action item to be generated for the SCSI-2 editors to establish a style for dealing with optional features, particularly as they relate to optional commands. The maximum generation data portion of the READ UPDATED BLOCK command will be split into a separate command. Opcodes 20h-23h will be assigned as vendor unique to satisfy a requirement voiced by Dave McIntyre. Item 8, which concerns whether RECOVERED ERROR sense key should be returned anytime updated data is returned, required further discussion and was deferred to the working group. Some users of optical WORM devices do not want updated data to be returned without any warning for security reasons. Other users do not want to be bothered with CHECK CONDITION status merely because a block has been updated. Paragraph 1 of READ UPDATED BLOCK will have the wording modified by Paul Boulay. The Immediate bit was deleted from the ERASE command. Jeff opened up the issue of how to present (i.e., document) additional sense codes. More columns are needed than are available on a sheet of paper. The religious issues arose again. The format used for presenting the additional sense codes was remanded to the editors. John Farnsworth expressed a need to have some exception handling documented for messages. The CCS document contained some information in this regard. 10.3 READ LOG Command Proposal (X3T9.2/87-43 Rev 2, X3T9.2/87-113) It was agreed to accept 87-43 R2 and include it in SCSI-2 R3. Document 87-43 R2 contains an error regarding NLS, NLR, and NLC bits. NLR should be NLC, NLR is not used. Additional pages for READ LOG were to be added to the agenda of the working group. The working group was also directed to reference document 87-113. 10.4 CD-ROM Proposal (X3T9.2/87-106) There were many questions regarding the implementation of SCSI on CD-ROM devices. Paul Boulay raised some issues regarding addressing modes, in particular the need for a logical address for accessing audio data. In light of the lack of general knowledge on the CD-ROM, a training session was scheduled for Tuesday evening of the working group meeting in Florida. Jeff Stai expressed concern that this proposal may impact the schedule of SCSI-2. 10.5 DAT Name (X3T9.2/87-145 Rev 1) The proposed name of "DAT Data Storage (DDS)" was accepted. (Ellen and her new baby girl are fine.) 10.6 MODE SELECT Implementations to support COPY (X3T9.2/87-131 R1) This item was sent to next working group for consideration/incorporation. 11. New Business 11.1 Should "WRITE SAME" be moved to SEND/RECEIVE DIAGNOSTIC page? Donna Pope submitted a proposal that would add this capability to the SEND DIAGNOSTIC command. However it was included as a bit in the CDB instead of being a separate page. The plenary asked Donna to revise her proposal to include the comments and make it a page of SEND DIAGNOSTIC. 11.2 Review of new documents 87-162 R3 Scanner command set: This new revision from the Scanner working group will be incorporated into the next SCSI-2 revision. 87-168 Japanese comments on SCSI-2: Item 1) Asynchronous interrupt procedure - This capability has been accepted for inclusion in SCSI-2 Rev 3. The relevant document is X3T9.2/87-52 Rev 1 on asynchronous event notification. Item 2) Request to define the illegal phase transitions in SCSI-2 - The target determines the order of phases on the SCSI bus. Very few transitions are actually illegal. It is the hosts responsibility to follow these phases and respond appropriately. Document X3T9.2/87-21 Rev 1 defines these phase transitions. It will be translated to ASCII and included as a figure in a future revision of SCSI-2. The appendix C on pointers in X3.131-1986 . Item 3) SCSI bus timing - There is no maximum time for a time-out. To define one would be an attempt to force a particular performance level. Many systems implement a watchdog timer for the whole command execution, however the value of the timer is dependent on the command being executed, the device type, and the vendors implementation. Item 4) Validity of selection after target disconnect to send the ABORT message - The correct way to abort a command after a disconnect has occurred is to select the target again with ATN asserted and send an IDENTIFY message followed by an ABORT message without negating ATN between the messages. Reference section 5.2.1 and 5.5.2 of the SCSI-2 document. Item 5) Disagreement of the data count between the initiator and the target - The host should sustain the transfer and discard the "extra" data. Appropriate error recovery procedures may be necessary at this time. The editors of the SCSI-2 document recognize the need for further clarification of these items and will attempt to do so. 87-172 Buffer Empty Ratio and Buffer Full Ratio: This proposal would define a zero value as the target's choice. The proposal was remanded to the working group. 87-173 Moving "Write Same" function to the SEND DIAGNOSTIC command: See agenda item 11.1, above. 87-174 IGNORE WIDE RESIDUE message: This was proposed as an alternative to the BVAL signals that were added to the "B" cable at the last working group meeting. The plenary favored the message approach, but there was still an issue of whether the message is permitted once per I/O or once per DATA PHASE. The topic was remanded to the working group. 87-175 Fast SCSI parameter selection: There was some sentiment to not specifically disallow faster SCSI on single-ended devices. The system tested needs to be documented to aid understanding the requirements necessary to allow fast SCSI to work. Jim Schuessler agreed to revise his documents (87-138, 87-148, and 87-175) to more closely fit the document style. This item was remanded to the working group. 87-176 Reconciliation of sequential-access positional terms: Bill Spence gave a quick introduction to his document. It was remanded to the working group. 87-177 Proposed direct-access MODE SELECT page 01h modifications: Bill Spence gave a quick introduction to this document. It was remanded to the working group. 87-178 Clarification of reset operation: This document says essentially the same thing that X3T9.2/87-64 said. 87-64 was previously accepted, but failed to be included. The editors agreed to try once again. 87-179 Explicit control of extended contingent allegiance: Bob Snively introduced this document and it was remanded to the working group. 87-180 Format Progress Reporting: Greg Floryance gave brief introduction of this document and it was remanded to the working group. 87-181 Optional Wide Data Transfer Options: Chairman's Note: This document was distributed at the meeting, but it was not available until the second day -- Consequently, many people were not aware of its existence. Also, since this portion of the agenda was covered on the first day, no introduction was given. 87-181 was added to the working group agenda. 11.3 Agenda for Orlando Working Group The following items were identified for the Orlando working group agenda: 1. Denoting optional features -- Editors to pick an economical style. 2. Archival vs. update operation of WORM media. (Boulay) 3. READ LOG command. [87-43R2,-113] 4. CD-ROM command set proposal. (Lamers) [87-106] 5. Clarify initiator ability to select a target to ABORT a pending command after the target disconnects. [87-168] 6. Buffer full/empty ratios. (Boulay) [87-172] 7. IGNORE WIDE RESIDUE Message. (Goldman) [87-174] 8. Fast SCSI. (Schuessler) [87-138,-148,-175] 9. Compatibility of non-queued targets with queued initiators. (Snively) 10. Residues on deferred error handling. 25. Optional Wide Data Transfer Option. (Masiewicz) [87-181] 11.4 SCSI-3 Project Proposal (SD-3) Gene Milligan stated that he had completed the preparation of the draft SCSI-3 project proposal, but did not have a paper copy with him. Although printing a copy was possible at the meeting, it was felt that deferring discussion until the next meeting would be better in that it would give people time to review the document prior to the meeting. 12. Review of Action Items 12.1 Gene Milligan will prepare a draft SD-3 for SCSI-3. 12.2 Paul Nitza will draft a note or edit section 6.2.2 Logical Unit Number to add wording to the future direction of the committee concerning this field. 12.3 Jeff Stai will reword section 5.2.2.2 number 9 and 10 to close several holes in soft reset. 12.4 Paul Nitza will reword section 5 to clarify that the initiator cannot send multiple groups of messages during a single MESSAGE OUT phase. 12.5 John Lohmeyer will point out the X3T9.2 concerns on meeting costs to X3T9. 12.6 Paul Boulay will review the archival vs. update issue for WORM optical media. 12.7 Larry Lamers will conduct a CD-ROM training session Tuesday evening during the Orlando working group meeting. 12.8 Jim Schuessler will consolidate his three documents on Fast SCSI into a detailed proposal on how to modify the appropriate sections of the SCSI-2 draft standard. 12.9 Bob Snively will investigate compatibility issues of non-queued targets with queued initiators. 12.10 Dal Allan will prepare revision 2.0 of ESDI (X3T9.2/87-105) and will send a copy to Bill Burr for the X3T9 letter ballot. 12.11 John Lohmeyer will request a letter ballot on forwarding ESDI at the X3T9 meeting. 12.12 Bob Snively will prepare a proposal on target vs. logical unit addressing. 13. Meeting Schedule Several attendees complained that their hotel rates had been increased by $16.00 or more to $91.00 per night when the hotel learned that they were attending an X3T9 meeting. One attendee who was not able to get a reservation at the Ramada was paying $48.00 per night for accommodations at another local hotel. The out-of-the-way meeting location had also significantly added to the travel cost for attendees. John Lohmeyer accepted an action item to bring up the issue at the X3T9 meeting. Chairman's note: Immediately after the X3T9.2 meeting adjourned, Dawn Williams of Classic Consulting explained the financial arrangements of the meeting. She stated that lack of competition in the Saratoga Springs area prevented Classic Consulting from being able to negotiate a better room rate. The $16.00 per night surcharge consisted of $6.00 per night for audio/visual equipment and $10.00 per night fee for Classic Consulting's services. The $91.00 per night fee did include all applicable taxes.
