Meeting SChedule 13.1 General Working Groups 14. Adjournment Draft Minutes X3T9.2 #71 Meeting August 17-18, 1987 Colorado Springs, Colorado 1. Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the Chairman, called the meeting to order at 9:00 am, Monday August 17, 1987. Each of the attendees introduced themselves and stated their company affiliation. The attendance list was circulated with the standard instructions on membership. John Lohmeyer announced the results of the last X3T9 meeting on the motion presented for merging X3T9.2 and X3T9.3. At X3T9, the motion to merge the task groups failed. Another motion to reassign some of the responsibilities of X3T9.2 and X3T9.3 passed. The ESDI and Flexible Disk projects are to be transferred from X3T9.3 to X3T9.2. The X3T9 action does not preclude the present format of having a joint session with X3T9.3. However, minutes and document distribution will be handled separately. Copies of SCSI-2 Rev 2 (X3T9.2/86-109 Rev 2) were distributed to attendees at the meeting. John Lohmeyer agreed to mail copies to those principals and alternates not in attendance. 2. Approval of Agenda The agenda from the mailing was revised slightly and copies of the revised agenda were available at the meeting. Items 10.4 Inquiry Serial Number Justification, 10.5 Printer Proposal, and 11.2.3 Other Connector Manufacturers Presentations were added to the agenda. The agenda was approved with these changes. 3. Attendance and Membership Membership requirements were discussed. It was noted that the 1988 service fees are going up from $175 to $200 for a principal and one alternate and from $100 to $150 for observers. In addition, X3T9 is planning an equitable document distribution system that would result in a separate billing for documentation mailings. New members at the meeting: Ciprico Inc: Bill Winterstein; Alternate, Tom Wicklund Aspen Peripherals: Kim B. Le Conners Peripherals: Tom A. Fiers The Chairman stated the attendance rules. Due to the Chairman's busy schedule, no letters concerning non-attendance were sent since the last meeting, so no members were "terminated" at the meeting. Enclosure (1) is the list of attendees for the meeting. Enclosure (2) is the changes to the X3T9.2 membership list and enclosure (3) is the current X3T9.2 membership list. 4. Approval of Minutes The minutes were approved with minor corrections. 5. Liaision Reports 5.1 IEEE P996 - no report. This report will be dropped from future agendas. 5.2 IEEE P1134 - no report. This item will also be dropped. 5.1 ISO - Gary Robinson reported. The next ISO TC97/SC13 meeting is scheduled for September 21-25 in San Jose. Representation is limited to those selected by X3T9. 6. Joint Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 6.1 High speed Working Group Don Tolmie reported on the High Speed Channel project study group. The goals and assumptions were outlined. A copy of the presentation will be included in the next mailing. There are 3 proposals under consideration. The group is both working from the top down and the bottom up. Several companies prototyping the Los Alamos proposal. Jim Schuessler also gave a report on the higher speed study for both SCSI and IPI using voltage-mode differential drivers. Current results indicate that SCSI can achieve 10M transfers/sec and IPI can achieve 12.5M transfers/sec. 6.2 ESDI Dal Allan reported. Several people objected to the double polarization notches in the connector drawings. Harvey Waltersdorf from Thomas and Betts suggested that revised SCSI connector drawings with a single polarization notch would be better for the ESDI since there are more vendors with this style connector. John Lohmeyer volunteered to provide revised drawings based on the SCSI nonshielded connector drawings. Other proposed changes are pointed out in Dal Allan's 87-141 document. This document reflects comments from Tom Wicklund from Ciprico. Gene Milligan has also submitted a list of proposed changes in 87- 140. Gene presented a brief overview of this document. It was decided that there are sufficient proposed changes to schedule an ESDI Working Group meeting. The tentative date is September 28-29 in San Jose, CA. A mailing to the ESDI working group members will include further information on this meeting. Dal Allan is arranging the meeting. 6.3 Flexible Disk Gary Robinson reported. The document (X3.80R-198X) has been updated and is out for public review, which closes in November. Copies available from Global Engineering Documents (800/854-7179 or 714/540-9870) in Santa Ana, CA. 6.4 SMD Gene Milligan reported. The revised SMD standard has been published and is available for purchase from ANSI (X3.91-1987). 7. Carry over. 8.2 The Queuing Ad Hoc will review the IPI model on queuing. Complete (87-136). 8.3 Bob Snively will revise X3T9.2/87-52 to include the comments from the June plenary meeting. Complete. 8.4 Bob Snively will prepare a proposal on SCSI version switching. Complete (87-137). 8.5 Larry Lamers and the section editors will revise the SCSI-2 draft document to present the commands in alphabetical order. Complete. 8.6 Bill Spence will revise the EOT definition in the tape glossary with the assistance of Gary Stephens and Jim Semenak. Carry over. 8.7 Gene Milligan will prepare a draft SD-3 for SCSI-3. Carry over. 8.8 John Lohmeyer will review the unit vs extent reservation issue that he identified to determine whether superseding reservations adequately covers this situation. Complete - Rev 2 includes clarified wording. 9. Separate Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 9.1 SCSI General Working Group (X3T9.2/87-107) The General Working Group minutes were reviewed and the following highlights discussed: (1) Reservation Queuing has been removed from the SCSI-2 Rev 2 draft document. If there any objections please inform the committee. (2) The physical level Automtic Media Changers proposal has been included in the SCSI-2 Rev 2 draft document. If there are any objections or comments please inform the committee. Bill Spence has determined that he cannot change the wording to deal with powering terminators locally without significantly altering the intent of the document (Reference item 30 of 87-107). Possibly, an implementors note could be added to describe powering terminators locally. 9.2 SCSI Scanners The scanner group has not met recently. Jim Murphy has resigned his position as editor of this section as he has left Dest to return to school. The new editor of this section is Ben Driscoll of Datacopy Corp. 9.3 Command Queuing Jim McGrath gave a brief report. He asked for feedback from the systems people on data integrity. Rev 3 of the queuing proposal (X3T9.2/87-59) is being worked on by the queuing committee and is available on the SCSI BBS for general members. Gary Stephens asked, "How do you recover from an error when commands are queued?" The proposal and Gary's question will be discussed at the Wichita working group meeting. 9.4 SCSI Medium Changers A section on Medium Changers has been included in Rev 2. 10. Old Business 10.1 Asynchronous Event Notification (AEN) A new revision of document X3T9.2/87-52 (Rev 1) was available from Bob Snively which documents the changes discussed at the Irvine working group. Gene Milligan objected to the fact that the INQUIRY command does not indicate if a device supports AEN. If the INQUIRY command responds as a processor device it may or may not support the AEN option. However, a device attempting to send AEN data to that processor device may receive a CHECK CONDITION even though it was a processor device. Gene suggested that in addition to processor device types another qualifier should be used to indicate if a device supports the AEN option. Further discussion on this topic is scheduled for the next working group meeting. 10.2 SCSI-2 Editor Assignments John Lohmeyer reviewed the current list of editors for the SCSI-2 draft document. Peter Dougherty of UNISYS will take over sections 1 thru 6 from Ralph Shultz/Larry Lamers. Ben Driscoll of Datacopy Corp is the new editor of the scanner section. 10.3 Wide SCSI [Odd byte, 16-bit connector option (87-118)] Discussion on this item was deferred to the Wichita working group meeting. 10.4 INQUIRY Serial Number Justification (left vs right) The committee discussed why the Serial Number field in the INQUIRY command was right justified when the other ASCII fields are left justified. The conclusion of the discussion was that it is more convenient to treat this field as a computational field rather than as a text field. In order to help those who determine whether a field is supported by looking only at the left-most character, this field is to be left-filled with ASCII zeros (30h). Bill Spence moved and Jim Semenak seconded that the INQUIRY command Serial Number Field be right justified with ASCII zero (30h) fill. The motion was carried: 20 YES, 4 NO. 10.5 Printer Proposal Terry Johnson and John Lohmeyer reviewed the printer propsal submitted by John Lohmeyer. Some discussion was held on the concept of downloadable fonts and the selection of those fonts. This proposal is oriented toward a bridge level product (i.e., SCSI to other device type interfaces), not an embedded product. Further discussion will be held at the Wichita working group meeting. 11. New Business 11.1 Wide SCSI Shielded Connector Selection AND 11.2 High-Density Connectors for SCSI-2 A special connector working group meeting will be held on Tuesday morning of the Wichita working group meeting to sort out the connector issues. New connector types (ribbon vs pin and socket) and the shielded connector selection for wide SCSI will be discussed. 11.2.1 AMP Presentaion Ed Reynolds presented a .050" by 0.100" centerline "D" style pin and socket type connector. Both shielded and unshielded models available in both vertical and right angle formats. The shielded conector has a mechanical latch/release mechanism. This type of connector has been on the market for about 4 years. See document X3T9.2/87-143. There are no patents on the mating portions of the connector and there are multiple sources of supply. 11.2.2 IBM presentation Gerald Marazas presented an IBM PS/2 card with a SCSI-1 standard shielded connector (Alternative 2) and noted that the card did not fit in the system due to the physical size of the connector. He proposed a new alternative connector as follows (see document X3T9.2/87-133 for details): (1) Miniature ribbon type connector (2) Pin spacing reduced from 85 mils to 50 mils (3) 60-pin connector with the first 50 pins identical to SCSI-1 and the remaining 10 pins would be vendor unique. The committee was largely against the 10 vendor unique pins since this would introduce incompatiblity between devices from different manufacturers. Gerry plans to resubmit the proposal at the Wichita working group, separating the controversial portion from the non-controversial portion. 11.2.3 Other Connector Presentations Mr. Fernando Ramirez of Burndy passed around samples of their miniature ribbon style connectors. Burndy manufactures both pin-and-socket and ribbon-type connectors. Fujitsu Components has a similar type of connector (pin and socket) as presented by AMP. Mr. Robert Herron of 3M passed around samples of their miniature ribbon style high-density connector. (The Burndy and 3M connectors are similar, but not compatible.) Steve Goldman asked wether or not the various connectors can be used in a daisy chain environment. Several manufacturers commented that the current high-density connectors do not have that capability but it is being investigated. There was a question on the wire sizes that would work with the high-density connectors. AMP commented that the current connectors work well with 28 AWG wire, however, larger wire sizes may have a problem with the outside diameter of the jacket and strain relief. Some thoughts were presented to define a new connector which supported 16-bit SCSI in a single connector/cable. A special connector working group meeting will be held on Tuesday morning of the Wichita working group meeting to sort out the connector issues. New connector types (ribbon vs pin and socket) and the shielded connector selection for wide SCSI will be discussed. The 50 vs 60 pin issue and a single cable for 16-bit SCSI was deferred to Tuesday afternoon at the Wichita working group meeting. 11.3 Review of SCSI-2 Draft Document (X3T9.2/86-109 Rev 2) The SCSI-2 Rev 2 draft document was briefly introduced to the committee with highlights of the major changes. The documented Additional Sense codes in section 8 and 9 have been keyed to Sense Keys. Several people objected to this method since the Minneapolis working group had decided that the additional sense codes are orthoginal to the Sense Keys. There was an editorial problem with the 12-byte commands in section 15. The transfer length should be aligned on a word boundary and will be corrected in future revisions. Several problems were pointed out in the soft reset section. Jeff Stai has accepted an action item to correct these problems. The question of whether or not an initiator can send mutiple groups of messages during a single MESSAGE OUT phase was raised. After some debate the committee concluded that this is not possible but not clearly stated in the document. Paul Nitza accepted an action item to clarify the wording in section 5. 11.4 Review of new documents The following new documents where reviewed briefly and will be covered in more detail at the next working group meeting: X3T9.2/86-109 Rev 2, SCSI-2 Rev 2 (Covered in item 11.3) X3T9.2/87-132, Comments on ESDI Connectors (Covered in item 6.2) X3T9.2/87-133, IBM Connector Proposal (Covered in item 11.2.2) X3T9.2/87-136, Study of IPI-SCSI Queuing (Covered in item 9.3) X3T9.2/87-52 Rev 1, Asynchronous Event Notification X3T9.2/87-98 Rev 1, Proposed Buffered Mode for Deferred Errors X3T9.2/87-103 Rev 1, Printer Command Set proposal X3T9.2/87-116 Rev 1, Format Unit Media Initialization Pattern X3T9.2/87-126, Send/Receive Diagnostic Command with pages X3T9.2/87-127, Inquiry Command with VPD Information X3T9.2/87-128, Search Command Modifications X3T9.2/87-129, Mode Select/Sense Verify Error Recovery Parameters Page X3T9.2/87-130, Target Implemented Options X3T9.2/87-131, Mode Select problems with the Copy command X3T9.2/87-137, Progammable Control of SCSI Operating Mode X3T9.2/87-138, Fast SCSI (see below) X3T9.2/87-139, Additions to Read Position command for chapter 7 X3T9.2/87-144, Additions to Automatic Medium Changer Commands X3T9.2/87-145, Sequential Access Density Code for DAT Fast SCSI (87-138) - The question of cable types and specifications came up. Also we need to make a decision on the maximum cable lengths (25m or 50m). Dave McIntyre of HP suggested that during synchronous transfer rate negotiation, the transfer period should actually reflect the maximum rate at which the device is guaranteed to receive data without error, not the rate at which it intends to transfer data (which may be lower). 11.5 Miscellaneous issues identified on the SCSI BBS John Lohmeyer passed around a directory listing of the files available on the SCSI Bulletin Board System (316-688-8700). 11.6 Should LUN field be dropped from the CBDs? (X3T9.2/87-110) Since SCSI-2 requires an IDENTIFY Message, the LUN field in the CDB is no longer required. Should the LUN field in the CDB be changed to reserved for all future groups of commands? The committee decided for backwards compatibility reasons that the LUN should remain defined in all new CDB groups. However, the committee would like to reclaim this field for future versions of this standard. Section 6.2.2 will be modified to state the future intentions of the committee concerning the LUN field. 11.7 Draft Agenda for the Wichita Working Group The following topics have been identified for discussion at the Wichita Working Group: 1.
