Opening Remarks John Lohmeyer, the new chairman, called the meeting to order at 9:00 am, Monday April 27, 1987. He thanked Gene Gonzales of AMD, the host, for providing excellent facilities and support. He also thanked Ed Calkins of IBM for providing the copies of SCSI-2 revision 1. Each of the attendees introduced themselves and stated their company affiliation. The SCSI bulletin board system is up and running. It can be accessed at 316/688-8700 using 8 bit, no parity and 1 stop bit. Baud rates available are 300, 1200 and 2400. It is not possible to download or upload using 300 baud. Information available includes: document register, membership list, committee documents, minutes, and a bulletin board users guide. It is also possible to leave private and public messages. It was suggested that documents to be submitted should be uploaded to the bulletin board or sent to the chair in WordStar or ASCII format. 2. Approval of Agenda The agenda was approved with minor changes. 3. Attendance and Membership The meeting was attended by 88 individuals from X3T9.2 and 19 individuals from X3T9.3. The X3T9.2 attendee list is enclosure (1) and X3T9.3 attendee list is enclosure (2). The X3T9.2 membership changes are summarized in enclosure (3) and the current X3T9.2 membership list is enclosure (5). The merged voting rules were discussed since many issues come up which are of interest to people in both meetings. The members are to vote according to their membership. The meetings are currently sharing projects in common and eventually it will be one meeting. The following are new member organizations at the meeting. A straw vote was made suggesting that revised minutes not be included in the mailings, unless significant changes are made. 5.0 Liaison Reports 5.1 IEEE P996 Carl Warren was not present to provide a report. 5.2 IEEE P1134 (X3T9.2/87-58) Carl Warren was not present to provide a report. 5.3 ISO Arrangements for the next meeting of TC97/SC13 were announced. It is scheduled for September 21-25, 1987 in the San Jose Hyatt. 6.0 Joint Working Group and/or Project Status Report 6.1 SCSI-2 IPI Differential National Semiconductor recently received a cable from Madison Cable. Complete results were not available. The next meeting is scheduled for May 14 and 15 at Santa Clara. Contact Balu Balakrishnan at National Semiconductor, San Jose, CA 95052 408/721-4283. 6.2 High Speed Channel Discussions determined there were philosophical differences between those attending. Objective of next meeting on May 14 and 15 is to decide on a list of functional requirements. Refer to 6.1 for meeting information. 6.3 ESDI It is anticipated that a document will be brought into the joint meeting in June. The draft document is to be included in the X3T9.3 mailing. An issue to be discussed at the next meeting is the fate of the tape section. A working group meeting is scheduled for May 11 in San Jose at the Hyatt House. 6.4 SMD and Flex Final Edit Review A proposal is expected to be submitted concerning clock instability for a future revision of the SMD I/O. Documentation errors were discovered in the original SMD standard describing the round cable connector. The corrected drawings introduced a new error by reversing the gender of the jack screws from the industry standard. G. Milligan made the following motion in regards to the SMD document: "As SMD Technical Editor, I move that X3T9.3 approve the correction being made to the round cable connectors. The motion specifically authorizes the Technical Editor to work with volunteers of connector companies to document to the best of their ability the originally intended and de facto SMD round cable and connectors. The motion also specifies that these corrections be made as part of the ANSI edit process. The purpose and effect is to preserve the connector the committee intended to document originally." The vote: Objections - none. 7.0 Document Distribution 7.1 Proposed document distribution procedures for 1988 There will be an increase in the membership fees in 1988, in order to allow mailings to be distributed through some third party. Under the new arrangements everyone who pays the increased fees (P & O) will get the same (complete) mailings. 7.2 X3T9.2 Document List The following documents were distributed at the meeting: Document Number Description ------------------- ----------------------------------- X3T9.2/86-109 Rev 1 Enhanced SCSI (SCSI-2) working document X3T9.2/87-59 Command Queuing proposal for SCSI-2 (rev from 87-46,-49,& -54) X3T9.2/87-60 SCSI-2 Identification of REQUEST SENSE response X3T9.2/87-61 SCSI-2 Broadcast capability X3T9.2/87-63 READ UPDATED BLOCKS Command Proposal (Revised from 87-39) X3T9.2/87-64 Operating modes after hard RESET X3T9.2/87-65 Terms for a tape glossary X3T9.2/87-66 Tape Write EOT Sense Key (Propose: VOLUME OVERFLOW) X3T9.2/87-67 Minutes IPI/SCSI Higher Speed Working Group X3T9.2/87-68 Proposed Sequential-Access density codes (QIC-150,-300,& -600) X3T9.2/87-69 Wide SCSI text to accompany 87-36 for an appendix The SCSI-2 revision 1 document (X3T9.2/86-109 Rev 1) was distributed to principals and alternates in attendance at the plenary meeting. The hard disk reset issue is addressed in document 87-64 from Skip Jones. -- Complete 12.2 Gary Stephens will make a proposal to enumerate those MODE SELECT actions which will cause UNIT ATTENTION for Sequential-Access Devices. MODE SELECT actions which cause UNIT ATTENTION was deferred; G. Stephens not in attendance. -- Carry Over 12.3 Dal Allan and Bob Snively will produce a proposed statement of SCSI-2 compatibility goals. SCSI compatibility goals are addressed in scope of SCSI-2 rev 1. -- Complete 12.4 Larry Lamers will draft an implementors note on rounding. The implementors note on rounding as been incorporated into SCSI-2 rev 1. -- Complete 12.5 Bill Burr will discuss a vendor code registration authority for the Vendor Identification field of the INQUIRY command with X3T9. Vendor code registration for the INQUIRY data has been discussed at X3T9. -- Although X3T9 has not obtained any results yet, this action item is complete. 8.2 X3T9.3 There were no old action items. 9.0 Separate Working Group and/or Project Status Reports 9.1 SCSI-2 General, Tape, and Optical (X3T9.2/87-56) Many items were deferred at the general working group meeting in Tempe, AZ because several key members were not able to attend. There was a discussion on the merits of accepting the SCSI-2 revision 1 document as the base working document even though the plenary members had received it within the hour. Ralph Schultz moved and Bill Spence seconded that X3T9.2/86-109 revision 1 be accepted as the current working document. Bob Snively called the motion after several minutes of further discussion. The motion passed, 40 in favor, 0 not in favor, 0 abstaining. John Lohmeyer gave a brief report on the new document. The change bars were generated manually based on a comparison of revision 0 and revision 1. The result is that some minor changes may have been missed. The Scope section has been substantially revised to include SCSI-2 compatibility goals. The sections that have not changed since revision 0 carry the revision 0 date of 10/31/86. New figures have been added for the 60-pin connectors. A new section, 6.5, on rounding has been included. A proposal for 12-byte commands for section 15 was not included, nor was the disk changer proposal. There seems to be some potential confusion on the square bracket notation [] used within the document. These brackets are used by the editors to act as placemarkers and reminders of work to be done. The absence of square brackets does not imply that the topic is stable. The whole document is a draft proposal and is subject to revision as it states on the cover page. 9.2 SCSI Scanner The next scanner ad-hoc meeting will be held on 04/29/87 at Dest. The agenda will concentrate on error codes, error recovery definitions, and converting Mode Select/Mode Sense commands to page format. 9.3 SCSI Queuing Bob Snively presented document 87-59 as the output of the logical unit command queuing study group. The report was well received, but some items remain for the command queuing ad-hoc group to tackle at their next meeting. 9.4 IPI Multimaster Two proposals were received and reviewed. W. Sanderson has an action item to write up functional requirements. 9.5 IPI-2 Tape The editor was given all the changes for the document. Work on the document is continuing. 9.6 IPI Communications X3T9 provided comments which were directed more towards editorial/nomenclature issues in the document. There were no technical issues. C. Pheterson has an action item to edit the document incorporating the comments from X3T9. 9.7 IPI-3 Disk/Tape The first pass of the ANSI editor on both the Disk and Tape Generic documents has been completed. The latest version is Rev. 5A, the basis for the ANSI edit. 10. Old Business 10.1 SCSI & SCSI-2 Compatibility Philosophy (X3T9.2/87-50) This was documented in the Scope Section of SCSI-2 revision 1. 10.2 SCSI-2 Differential Drivers & Cables A study group had convened on this topic, however there had not been sufficient time to gather the necessary data. Jim Schuessler reports that he has received cable in lengths of 25, 50, and 100 meters to perform the testing. Preliminary results are based on restricted temperatures. Some delays are independent and some delays are interdependent. The next ad-hoc study group will convene at National Semiconductor, 2900 Semiconductor Drive, San Clara, CA on 05/14/87 - 05/15/87. Please contact Balu Balakrishnan @ (408) 721-4283 if you plan to attend. Ref. X3T9.2/87-67 for minutes of the last meeting. There followed more discussion on VOH and VOL (ref. page 4-12 of SCSI-2). Why are the numbers in the document at all? Why is there a 1.0 volt minimum? Is not the RS-485 specification adequate? These are questions the plenary has directed to the ad-hoc study group to address. 10.3 SCSI-2 Medium Changer devices The FileNet proposal was discussed. Some SCSI purists felt the commands were too primitive and therefore too closely tied to a specific hardware implementation. The question was raised whether medium changers device type was adequate if different device types were attached to it. How would the host know what the characteristics of the medium were? Skip Jones has arranged an ad-hoc study group to meet at Maxtor, 150 River Oaks Parkway, San Jose, CA on 05/11/87. Contact Skip at (408) 432-1700 if you plan to attend. 10.4 Testing SCSI Bill Burr said he has received a broad ranging response to the first release of test software. As a result several bugs have been corrected and improvements made. A new release will be available on 05/01/87. A sign-up sheet was passed around for those people who have an SDS-1 to get the new release. 10.5 Synchronous SCSI Jeff Stai raised some questions on the changes made to the synchronous SCSI part of SCSI-2 rev 1. The wording had been changed to clarify that the ACK pulse could be generated immediately following the receipt of REQ by the host without waiting 90 nanoseconds. A question was, might not the host respond to glitches on REQ that were not meeting the 90 nanosecond requirement. This item is remanded to the general working group meeting for further review. 11.0 New Business 11.1 General Working Group Agenda The following agenda items were identified for the General Working Group meeting (May 18-20): 1. SCSI-2 Rev 1 review of: MODE SELECT and MODE SENSE page descriptions and FORMAT UNIT command. 2. MODE SELECT actions that cause UNIT ATTENTION condition (Gary Stephens). 3. Optical disk 12-byte command set (John Hoy). [87- 72] 4. Version/level switching via INQUIRY DDF and RDF. [87-42] 5. INQUIRY device type 7Fh issue (Paul Nitza). 6. Asynchronous event notification (Stephens/ Snively/ Houlder/ Boulay). [87-52, 87-61] 7. Command Queuing. [87-59] 8. READ LOG command (Greg Floryance). [87-43] 9. Document Restructuring (John Hoy). 10. Clarification of WRITE AND VERIFY modifier bits (Greg Floryance). 11. Reservation problem in COPY command (Dan Davies). [87-70] 12. Power-on protocol proposal (Bob Snively). [87-53 Rev 1] 13. Page concept for SEND DIAGNOSTIC, RECEIVE DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS, SEND, and RECEIVE commands (Daniel Loski). 14. Deadlock concerns when queuing with RESERVE and RELEASE commands (Jeff Stai). 15. INQUIRY Vital Product Data proposal (Greg Floryance). [87-42] 16. Broadcast Proposal (Paul Boulay). [87-61] 17. Additional Sense Code review in Rev 1. Need codes for Saved Values not supported, Saved Values are not available, etc. 18. Clocking on edges vs. levels in synchronous SCSI (Jeff Stai). 11.2 Meeting Schedule (see 13.2) 11.3 Tape Write EOT Sense Key (X3T9.2/87-66) After some discussion the plenary accepted this document for incorporation into SCSI-2. 11.4 Extensions of INQUIRY (X3T9.2/87-42) The subject of this document is modifications to the Inquiry command to provide vital product data, and a means to establish SCSI version level between host and controller. Included in the document was the notion of differentiating between a target and a LUN when data is returned for the FRU code (field replaceable unit). It was not clear in the document just how the existing DDF field would be handled. These items all generated discussion, especially since there are previous outstanding SCSI architecture issues which this proposal built on. The majority of the plenary is in favor of using Inquiry to provide vital product data. Greg Floryance has been ask to rework his proposal in light of the comments presented and submit it to the general working group meeting. 11.5 Common Read Log Command (X3T9.2/87-43) The subject of this document is the READ LOG command. Terminology misunderstandings (buffer overrun, underrun) caused some confusion at first. This command is a generalized version of the existing sequential access device command. It is to be moved to section 7 for all device types. However some work is required relating to MODE SELECT parameters for controlling the reporting process, and for defining additional pages of logged data to be reported. Bob Snively and Greg Floryance will work on the latter item. The MODE SELECT issue will be dealt with at the next general working group meeting. 11.6 Proposed Sequential Access Density Codes (X3T9.2/87-68) The subject of this document is added codes for Qic 150, 300, and 600 tape density. The plenary accepted this document for incorporation in SCSI-2, with the caveat from the vice-chairman that if products do not materialize to support these densities the codes will be recovered for other uses. 11.7 SCSI-2 Identification of Request Sense Response (X3T9.2/87-60) This is a proposal for determining SCSI level based on the error code field in the REQUEST SENSE data. This issue seems to inflame the passions of members. The proposal was tabled in light of the fact that the committee needs to address the more general issue of SCSI level determination. 11.8 SCSI-2 Broadcast Capability (X3T9.2/87-61) This is a proposal to use a broadcast phase to alert all SCSI ID's of who is on the bus. The proposal was very well thought out, but it addresses an open SCSI architectural issue, asynchronous event notification. Again the proposal was tabled until the committee addresses the more general issue of asynchronous event notification. 11.9 Proposal for a Read Updated Blocks Command (X3T9.2/87- 63) The subject of this document is the UPDATE BLOCK command for write-once devices. The plenary accepted the concept, however S. Jones was directed to update his proposal in view of John Hoy's work on twelve-byte commands and re-submit to the next plenary meeting. 11.10 Proposal Defining Operating Modes After Hard Reset (X3T9.2/87-64) This document was accepted for incorporation into SCSI-2. 11.11 WRITE & VERIFY command The question "What do BytChk and ECC verify really mean?" brought about quite a discussion. It seems there are several implementations based on a hitherto unnoted ambiguity in the WRITE AND VERIFY command. Greg Floryance will develop a proposal to form the basis for future consideration. 11.12 Document Restructuring There was a discussion on restructuring the SCSI-2 document in an effort to reduce the size and increase the comprehensibility of the tome. John Hoy will prepare a sample of a portion of the document for review at the general working group meeting. 11.13 Comments from the Chairman 1) Several people used foils and an overhead projector to make their presentations. While this generally has not been done in the past, it worked very well. With the size of the meetings (over 85 people) and the increasing complexity of the subject matter, the chair recommends the use of foils for future presentations. 2) The chair requests that the mailing volunteer bring five extra copies of the mailing to the plenary meeting. This will accommodate those few people who did not receive their mailing for whatever reason. 12.0 Review of New Action Items 12.1 Gary Stephens will make a proposal to enumerate those MODE SELECT actions which will cause UNIT ATTENTION for Sequential-Access Devices. 12.2 John Lohmeyer will send a single-sided copy of SCSI-2 Rev 1 to Tony Lo for distribution. 12.3 Tony Lo will distribute SCSI-2 Rev 1 to the non- attending Principals and Alternates. 12.4 Jim Murphy will host a Scanner ad-hoc meeting April 29 at Dest. 12.5 Balu Balakrishnan will host a differential ad-hoc meeting May 14-15 at National Semiconductor. 12.6 Gerry Houlder will host a general working group meeting May 18-20 at the Airport Hyatt in Minneapolis. 12.7 Paul Nitza will prepare a proposal on INQUIRY 7Fh usage. 12.8 Jim Semenak will include X3T9.2/87-68 (new density codes) in the next revision of section 9. 13.0 Meeting Schedule: 13.1 Plenary Meetings: The next meeting of X3T9.2/.3 will be June 22 and 23 at the Ramada Renaissance - Vancouver, 1733 Comox Street, Vancouver, B.C.
