Hi Ralph,

Thanks for the welcome back.  You'll get to see me in person in just four days -- ha!  I was a little hasty in my first email, sending it off before I realized that the related command, SET IDENTIFYING INFORMATION, should also have a note as to its genesis.

Subject: Re: REPORT DEVICE IDENTIFIER/REPORT IDENTIFYING INFORMATION

Mark,

Not that it affects your request to note the old command name,
but the name was changed at the explicit request of CAP in
Rob's proposal, 06-221r3 Peripheral device identifying information.

All the best,

.Ralph

P.S. Welcome back!

Hello,

In SBC-3 r07 and SPCs before SPC-4 r07 there is/was a command named REPORT DEVICE IDENTIFIER.  This is a version of the MAINTENANCE (IN) command with service action REPORT PERIPHERAL DEVICE/COMPONENT DEVICE IDENTIFIER (command code A3h, service action code 05h) defined in SSC-2 r04.

In SPC-4 r07 this command was renamed REPORT IDENTIFYING INFORMATION.  I think this may have been an artifact of Paul Entzels proposal 06-278r0.

One way or the other, SBC-3 should use the new name for the command.  I also think it would be helpful to add something like this command was named REPORT DEVICE IDENTIFIER in previous versions of this standard into SPC, and this command was named REPORT DEVICE IDENTIFIER in previous versions of SPC into SBC.
